Natural remedies for your brutal allergies

Meanwhile, a lot of people, myself included,
are having problems right now with allergies.
So how do you battle them during the summer,
I guess still in the spring where we are?
So we asked Johnny Bowden for some tips
and some natural ways to help fight the allergies.
Johnny, save us please, because we are struggling.
We are all struggling with this time
because the allergies are just your immune system
reacting to something that very often
is not really that dangerous, like pollen,
and sometimes even things that are very natural
to our bodies.
Our bodies get very, very excited.
The immune system overreacts.
And basically, the best thing that we can do
is treat the symptoms, which are irritation.
In my case, my eyes respond like crazy.
I mean, even not a full-blown allergy,
but they're just very sensitive to the brightness
of the sun, and they tear all the time.
So one of the things that I do,
besides regular immune system support
with healthy foods like this that can contain
all the nutrients that we need,
is I never travel without these similacin eye drops.
And the funniest thing is, in preparing for this,
you know, we used to do all these live.
I used to be in Arizona when I would be with you
in the studio, and I flew all over the country doing these.
I was putting away winter clothes the other day,
and I'm looking in my jackets,
and there's one of these things in every single pocket.
It's like I just, I put it in every coat,
everything I traveled with, because they really,
first of all, they have no harsh ingredients,
these similacin products.
They have natural things like eye bright flour,
and they just have no side effects.
It's not like antihistamines,
which do have some downstream metabolites
that come about and can be troublesome.
I like things that are completely natural.
Whenever possible, there is some
over-the-counter medications I like.
Not very many, this is one of them.
I also like to support the immune system in general,
so it doesn't get too overactive,
and it doesn't get too crazy,
and I do that with things like vitamin C,
which of course everybody knows about.
A multiple, because it has the zinc and selenium.
Quercetin is something that I like a lot.
Quercetin is a flavonoid, really good for allergies,
really good for inflammation,
and it's found in foods like apples and onions.
So the more of these nice, colorful foods,
and nuts, and things like that that we eat,
the more we're giving our immune system
the nutrients that it needs.
And as far as symptoms go,
you can't beat the similacin eye drops,
as far as I'm concerned.
That's why I have them in every coat pocket.
So I love, Johnny, that we're fighting the allergies
from the inside out with what we eat,
but you said also with what you do.
Exercise, sleep?
Exercise, sleep is always important,
and here's why.
The connection, it's like six degrees of Kevin Bacon,
only it's only two degrees.
When you don't sleep well, and I mean restless,
going to the bathroom a lot,
just a lot of things on your mind,
and you're waking up,
what happens is the body sees that as a stressor.
That means it releases the stress hormone, cortisol,
that makes everything worse.
So you really wanna try to manage stress,
and really sleep restfully,
turn the lights out, keep the room dark,
set the temperature down a little cooler
than you think it might need to be,
like say 68 is kind of ideal.
And all of these things that you do
when you take care of yourself
help to modulate the immune system.
So you're really doing something for your immune system
every time you're making a healthful lifestyle choice.
All right, thank you so much, Johnny.
We will definitely put these tips into practice
in our everyday life.
