while they grew up in Beverly Hills mansions like the one where their Infamous crime took place the Menendez brothers Lyle and Eric have spent years behind bars with lives that look much different than before Lyle and Eric Menendez now 56 and 53 are currently serving their life sentences at the Richard G Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego after years of being house separately the brothers were reunited in 2018 and now live in a nones designated programming facility that allows for greater freedom and access to educational and Rehab programs their lives adapted to the rhythms of incarceration but they remain hopeful that recent developments in their case might offer a path to Freedom let's see what the Mendez brother's living situation is like these days in August 1989 Lyle and Eric Menendez were the perpetrators of the crime that took the lives of their parents Jose and Mary Louise Kitty Menendez at their family home in Hills the brothers were arrested in March 1990 and have been incarcerated ever since during their first trial Lyall and Eric shared testimony alleging they had been victims of abuse at the hands of their father which their mother knew about they stated this trauma contributed to their actions as they felt their lives were in danger the first trial ended with a deadlock jury for each brother the second trial which took place in 1995 had a single jury during this trial the defense's ability to introduced claims of abuse was restricted in 1996 the brothers were convicted of first-degree charges although they faced the possibility of the death penalty they were instead sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole now in their 50s lent Eric have adapted to Life Behind Bars although they were separated for many years due to concerns about potential escape plans they were reunited in 2018 upon seeing each other for the first time in over 20 years it's said they were overcome with emotion currently they're able to interact regularly during Recreation exercise and meals the Richer J Donovan Correctional Facility or rjd is a California state prison located in the foothills of OT Mesa near the US Mexico border in southern San Diego County spanning 780 Acres it's the only state pris in the area originally designed to hold single inmates in each cell overcrowding has led to double occupancy in many of the cells and as of mid 2022 the prison was housing over 3,000 inmates which is over capacity rgd transitioned from a Reception Center in 2012 to offer a sensitive needs yard as well offering housing to inmates that need special protection in those with severe mental health and medical condition this facility aims to balance incarceration with rehab offering various job opportunities and treatment programs for inmates too one of its unique features includes a bakery that produces nearly 10,000 loaves of bread for daily use in rgd and in other prisons giving valuable work experience for around 85 inmates there's also a shoe factory that manufactures Footwear for prisoners Statewide which employs additional inmates in highly sought-after position religious services at rgd are supported by five Interfaith chapels offering space for different religious groups to practice and store materials prison's layout and operations includes amenities like this but also stricter security measures especially for its Max security inmates who are only allowed 15 hours of yard time weekly over the years the Menendez brothers themselves have developed interests and engaged in productive activities at rgd Eric has assisted terminally ill inmates LED religious classes and taken an interest in painting lyol has been involved in prison reform efforts and served in inmate government for 15 years both brothers are committed to supporting other inmates and raising awareness about issues such as childhood trauma and abuse while Eric was already at rjd for over 20 years Lyle was about 500 miles away from him imprisoned in Mule Creek State Prison in Ian California brothers were separated and didn't speak for years but they communicated in letters and even played chess through the mail Lyall said in an a 1996 interview our start to prison life was tremendously painful my brother actually went on a hunger strike to try and keep us together in February 2018 Lyall was transferred to different housing unit at Richard G Donovan and in April of that same year Eric moved into the same unit as Lyle while incarcerated both Lyle and Eric Menendez also found love and married women who connected with them during their time in prison Eric married Tammy SackMan in 1999 after she had written to him following his first trial the couple met in person in 1997 and later married at falam State Prison Tammy even wrote a book about their relationship titled they say we never make it my life with Eric Menendez highlighting the challenges and strength of their marriage Lyall on the other hand married Rebecca sne in 2003 which was his second prison marriage after his previous one with former model Anna Ericson ended in divorce despite the constraints of prison life both brothers have built meaningful relationships with their wives nurturing their marriages through letters calls and the limited time they can spend together however due to their life sentences and the violent nature of their crimes the Menendez brothers remain ineligible for family visits including conjugal ones Lyall discussing his marriage to Rebecca in 2017 explain explain that their relationship is unique given the circumstances he said our interaction tends to be very free of distractions and we probably have more intimate conversations than most married spouses do who are distracted by life events he also shared that their daily phone calls give him a sense of stability we try and talk on the phone every day sometimes several times a day I have a very steady involved marriage and that helps sustain me and brings a lot of peace and joy it's a counter to the unpredictable very stressful environment here in May 2023 new developments in their case emerged when Roy Roso a former member of the boy band mudo publicly alleged that Jos Menendez had harmed him in the 1980s this Revelation combined with a letter Eric wrote to a cousin in 1989 referencing ongoing distress led to a petition for a new hearing or to vacate the brother's convictions the hearing is now scheduled for November 29th 2024 offering them A Renewed hope for the future despite this possibility the brothers remain cautious knowing that overturning their convictions will be challenging Lyla and Eric continue to stay connected with family and friends through phone calls emails and visits while the brothers remain hopeful for a chance at Freedom they've adapted to life within the prison system and seem to be dedicated to supporting those around them after looking at what the Menendez brothers lives are like in prison
