A buzz of excitement today in Washington, D.C., not over the presidential election,
but pandas. I mean, it's great because I love pandas and pandas are cute, but also it's great
for diplomatic relations. After a 19-hour flight from China, a FedEx plane packed with precious
cargo arriving at Dulles Airport this morning, two white cargo containers unloaded. Inside,
China's newest panda diplomat, Bao Li and Qing Bao, one male, one female, both three years old.
The two will call D.C. their home for the next decade. This time-lapse video shows crews
building their new habitat at the Smithsonian National Zoo. The bears are on loan for an
annual fee of a million dollars a year to help with China's panda conservation efforts. Bao Li
is a descendant of Bao Bao, who was born in D.C. but returned to China in 2017 to breed.
Back in June, two other pandas from China arrived at the San Diego Zoo, the first time pandas entered
the U.S. in 21 years, after a time of diplomatic strain between the U.S. and China. Pandas from
China first came to the U.S. in 1972, after President Richard Nixon visited China and the
pandas. Two months later, China is sending two to show their friendship. Now the pandas will be
out of the public eye until January, until they get used to their new surroundings. But fans can
stay connected to the pandas by following hashtag D.C. pandas. Got it, okay. The zoo
also posting on social media, you can find it under prepping for pandas.
