The Morsa, Odovenus rosmarus.
The Latin name Odovenus comes from the Greek Odu, Viente and Vaino, to walk.
It is a kind of pinniped mammal of the family of the Odovenids.
It is classified in the carnivorous order and in the sub-carnivorous order,
composed of the canids, mustelids, ursids, rossonids, among others.
It is a member of the superfamily Pinnipedia,
which is made up of the families Otaridae,
which are the marine lions,
Fossidae,
true seals,
Odovenidae,
morsa,
and the extinct Enaliartidae
and Desmatophosidae.
Odovenidae family,
made up of a single species, Odovenus rosmarus.
This family was considerably more diverse in the past.
There are two confirmed species,
the Atlantic morsa and the Pacific morsa.
State of conservation.
It has been evaluated for the Red List of Endangered Species of the UICN.
The morsa is a vulnerable species.
The total population of the morsa possibly exceeds 225,000 individuals.
The morsas have wrinkled skin brown and pink,
long and thin mustaches,
flat fins and a lot of fat in the body
to stay warm in the cold waters of the Alps.
The male morsa measures about 3.5 meters long,
while the females,
measure 3 meters and can weigh up to 1.5 tons.
Their bodies are heavy,
apparently a boy,
their heads are round and have wide snouts,
well endowed with thick fibrils
that seem to form a mustache.
They lack external ears.
The skin is thick and wrinkled,
with subjacent fat that can reach up to 15 centimeters of thickness.
Its skin is covered with a layer of short hair of approximately 1 centimeter,
which becomes thinner as it ages.
The morsas have large anterior extremities in the shape of a tail,
which extend approximately a quarter of the length of the body.
Their hind legs, like those of the botanicals,
can protrude under their bodies and are useful for diving,
locomotion and diving.
The plantar surfaces of both extremities are rough,
probably to provide traction in the dive.
Their long fangs are useful in many ways,
they use them as a defense against predators,
to take their huge bodies out of the cold water
and they seem to help them move on the ice when nailing it.
They also use them to open holes in the ice from below to breathe.
Fangs are found in both males and females
and continue to grow throughout their lives.
These fangs are canine teeth
and can reach approximately one meter long.
They have a deficient sight,
their sense of smell and hearing is more developed.
The vibrissae of their snouts also provide them with tactile information.
Their life expectancy in the wild is up to 40 years.
The morsas inhabit several areas of the circumpolar zone
that hardly relate to each other.
The morsas of the Pacific are found in the seas of Bering,
Chukotka and Laptev
and those of the Atlantic in coastal areas of northeastern Canada,
Greenland and Russia.
Morsas are very gregarious animals
that form herds of hundreds of individuals
and sometimes thousands.
They tend to remain close to the ground or ice masses
and migrate seasonally as the position of the layer of ice changes.
They can move to the most inhospitable places for their species.
In order to feel safe and not die crushed by themselves.
And it is that by being melting the sea ice,
these animals accumulate in small places,
one on top of the other,
to rest out of the water after feeding.
Some climb huge rocky cliffs,
seeking to have space.
The problem is that they need to return to the water sooner or later
and going down from these dangerous places generally does not end well.
They reach sexual maturity between 6 and 9 years.
The gestation period is 11 months.
They give birth to a single calf on land or on blocks of ice.
The newborn calves weigh between 45 and 75 kilograms
and are breastfed for a maximum period of 2 years.
They feed in the water, diving to depths of 90 meters.
They are able to stay under water for half an hour.
The bats are carnivores, molluscivores
and hunt other animals to survive.
They eat clams, snails, worms, octopuses, squids
and some types of slow fish.
Some studies show that the bat will consume
When there are no other sources of food available,
they can feed on the sick, the elderly
and even the young in surrogates.
A very hostile and aggressive way of survival.
This cannibal behavior is very rare.
The main predators of the bat are the polar bear and the orca.
Man has hunted bats at least since the 9th century.
Currently, only native Americans can hunt bats.
The survival of the species was threatened by excessive hunting in the past.
The hunters of the 18th and 19th centuries
captured bats with their fangs, oil, skin and flesh.
