Nyx, the primordial goddess of the night. The mighty goddess who's known to exist
since the creation of time itself. Nyx is regarded as proto-genoi, meaning a
firstborn deity. Since she exists since the beginning of creation, she's known to
be the mother of many many gods who acts as different functions of the cosmos.
Let's look into the best and complete list of Nyx's children that we know so far.
Nyx, together with her husband Erebus, the primordial god of darkness, gives birth to
Aether and Hamira. Aether is the primordial god of light and the upper sky, while Hamira
is the primordial goddess of the day. Both Aether and Hamira together bring
the bright day to the earth. Next, Nyx either alone or together with her
husband Erebus, gives birth to the Onroi, the gods of dream. Onroi were one thousand
sons of Nyx, who would work hand in hand with Hypnos. Every night, the Onroi would
emerge from the underworld and enter the thoughts of sleeping mortals, giving them
either a pleasant dream or a nightmare. Alongside one thousand sons, Nyx was also
the mother of one thousand daughters, named as Cerys. The Cerys were the goddesses of
violent and cruel death. Thus, the Cerys were often found upon battlefields, or where
epidemics had broken, fighting over the souls of the deceased. The Moirai, also known as
Fates, was a small group of daughters. They were Atropos, Clotho and Lachesis. The role
of the Moirai was to ensure that every being, mortal or divine, lived out their destiny
as it was assigned to them by the laws of the universe.
Next in the list is Hesperides, goddess of the evening. The Hesperides, usually three
in number, were the protectors of precious golden apples.
Next comes Hypnos, the god of sleep. Hypnos's name, of course, lives on today in English
words such as hypnosis. But in Greek mythology, Hypnos was considered to be a companion of
his mother, bringing rest each day to the mortals, and as such resided in a cave in
Next one is Thanatos, the god of death. The god of death was twin brother of Hypnos.
Though, unlike Cerys, Thanatos was actually the god of peaceful and non-violent death.
Next is Geras, the god of old age. Generally portrayed as an old man, Geras showed the
age and the pain and infirmity that came with it.
Moros, a son of Nix, who originally did not live near to his mother, but instead resided
upon Mount Olympus.
The next one is Moros, the dreadful son of Nix, who was the god of doom. Feared by all,
Moros was said to give people the ability to foresee their death.
Eris, the powerful daughter of Nix, was the goddess of strife and discord. In most cases,
Eris was considered an evil goddess, but she wasn't necessarily evil.
Nemesis, another famous daughter of Nix, was the goddess of retribution. Nemesis works
with Zeus, for she ensures that there is always a balance to the universe, where no human
is too happy or sad, or too lucky or unlucky.
Next is Apeta, the goddess of deception and fraud. Her male counterpart is Dolos, a minor
god of trickery.
Osys is another daughter of Nix. She is the goddess of misery, anxiety, grief, depression
and misfortune. Her Roman name is Miserea, from which the English word misery is derived.
The last, but not the least, was Philotes, the dear daughter of Nix. Unlike the other
children of Nix, who generally represented the dark and negative aspects of the cosmos,
Philotes represented affection and friendship. She was the goddess of compassion, friendship,
sexual and social intercourse.
And there, I gave you the best and most reliable list of Nix's children.
Though in some different versions, there are different children of Nix's too,
but this is the most accurate and logical list of the children.
