How about Matt McCarty?
Already had three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, made it his first PGA Tour start this season
last week, and he was filling it up just moments ago.
Matt McCarty, can he catch an Orlander?
You bet.
Wow.
Co-leaders at 9-under.
Don't think I saw two 9-unders on the card today, George, but just speaks to the fact
that we didn't have a lot of wind and the Tour setting it up a little bit gentle, being
the first competitive round on this golf course.
Here at the 14th, Matt McCarty just off the green.
He's down in that little bowl, he's got a lot of green to work with, but that grass
is a little thinner right there.
Oh, and what contact.
Beautiful.
That was just a moment ago.
Highlighting that name, McCarty, T7, his third shot at the 16th.
Chipping into the green, then once it gets up top, goes downhill, downwind.
McCarty filling it up.
He's now at 10-under, 1-under on the round, three back at Norlander and Svendsen.
Guys are playing lights out, southern Utah.
McCarty's third shot, par 5, 18th.
Really good chance to make this, chipping uphill, got enough green to work with.
About five feet, McCarty.
McCarty to jump up a spot, tie bet Coles at 11-under.
McCarty's showing some fight at that early bogey.
Since then, three birdies on 14, 16, and 18.
McCarty, par 3, third.
Couple-under on the round, you see he's solo 7th, two back.
Good job, bud.
This guy is just absolutely on fire these last three months.
What's happening on the third, McCarty, two back at Jaeger, Norlander, Svendsen.
Shave the deficit to one.
Real story, Matt McCarty just graduated from the Corn Fairy Tour.
Birdies on 4, 5, and 6, just short of the par 5, 7th and 2.
Oh, hello, McCarty.
With the eagle, he's out in front at 16-under.
The birdie to get to 14-under.
Matt McCarty in a five-hole stretch with six under par,
including that birdie on the 8th.
He's in the lead, but some trouble on the 10th.
Second shot to the 10th.
So tough hitting a wedge off an upslope out of a fairway bunker.
Back right hole location, there's some backstops.
Ooh, and that is going to be brutal. Stay in the grass.
All right, so that's PGA Tour rules official Bo Reim.
And what I believe has just happened is that he got free relief from that cart path right there,
sort of the gravel path behind, and got it up that direction
because the other side of the path was not playable.
And now he's taking an unplayable.
So in and two, drop and three.
And now he's going to be hitting his fourth shot for par.
And once it lands in that fairway, it's going to be straight downhill.
Rolls on. We'll have a putt for bogey.
This would be some heck of a five right here.
This putt's going to be just outside the left-hand edge.
What a save by McCarty.
He's got to feel good after that bogey.
He had a little lull in the middle part of his season.
Now the game's rounded back.
McCarty at 12.
I like the play going with less than driver here.
It pinches in at about 320 yards.
There is a bunker down that left-hand side, but he's just fine.
Very gettable hole location in this fairway.
Played pretty far back, but there's a ridge to the right and behind this hole
that he can work it in to get it close.
Oh, and it's just going to stay on top of this ridge.
That's going to be lightning fast, downhill, downwind.
Up one to 12. McCarty on the top of this ridge.
He just needs to barely get this thing started.
Such a hard putt to play high enough, knowing how quick it's going to be.
I mean, his second shot was that close to being a tap-in birdie.
Call it a stress tester for Matt McCarty, this for par on 12.
And there's not much in this putt, but the wind is now whipping from his right to left.
Just got to keep your pace up.
Smooth stroke, never a doubt.
McCarty only needs three-one.
Turn it in there, but this thing is going to hit very firm at that trajectory.
Perfect.
McCarty, 14th hole. This would be for eagle in the outright lead.
I think he's just fine with that, George.
This fairway is a mile wide.
One of the easier fairways to hit, and that should be a fairway hit right there.
Beautiful swing.
No hang-on in that swing. Just absolutely fully released.
Moving back towards the flag on the wind.
I'd say he can get back into his rhythm just fine, AO.
Perfect contact to get that kind of spin on it.
Love the way he stays down and through that strike.
Riding the wind with that draw he likes to play.
Look at this thing spin. Just nestling in there.
Ooh, and he executed a shot.
Tappen, Birdie, and McCarty.
18 under, leading by one.
Arguably one of the hottest players in professional golf right now.
McCarty, 18th tee, the par 5.
This hole playing about 30 yards shorter
than it says on the card because of the wind and the downhill.
He's picking up the tee quick.
Wow, AO. We've seen a lot of short irons and mid-irons coming in here the last hour.
Club on shoulder means it's right for a left.
I don't think he got clean contact there, Johnson, but it worked out well.
Turn the focus back to the leader, McCarty.
You can tell he wanted it with that speed.
You know, potentially being able to get in the house with a two-shot lead.
We'll see what the guys in back of him do,
but potentially getting a two-shot lead versus a one-shot lead.
7 under, 64.
Just haven't seen him get into a position
where he seems phased by anything out here on the PGA Tour.
It's the final round of the Black Desert Championship.
The leader, Matt McCarty, rolls that in for par on the 6.
Two-shot advantage right now over a trio of players,
two of them on the course.
I'm sorry, George. He's been very aggressive off the tee throughout the afternoon.
This par 5 is reachable.
Billy Ray, he was quick to the tee,
and this is one of the most intimidating tee shots on this golf course,
and this thing is bounding down the fairway.
That, gentlemen, is impressive.
He got 231, plays uphill 8 yards.
Playing more like 222.
Green's really starting to firm up today as this wind blows.
We're going to see some fireworks on this back 9 coming up.
He uses the backstop and works its way back another 7-8 feet onto the green.
Returning to the 7th, McCarty's eagle putt on the way.
First half of the putt is downhill, last half up the slope.
You know, Johnson, as a player, you look at holes like this,
7 and 9, the two par 5s on the front side.
You're counting on it in your game plan.
You've got to make four here.
Another horn, George.
Each day on the weekend, we've had the horn.
No distraction for the leader, Matt McCarty, up 2.
He likes to turn the ball over.
It suits his eye nicely.
He's walking after it.
What a shot.
The best we've seen all day.
McCarty, the PGA Tour rookie,
coming up huge on the drivable par 4 14th.
Really good swing, as Billy Ray said.
He likes to turn the ball over from left to right as a left-hander.
That's a draw.
He hit a beautiful one here yesterday.
Lands it just over the bunker.
I mean, this is just outstanding.
Knew it right off of contact.
He was walking after it.
Look at his eyes.
That's a good feeling when you hit a 3-wood and you just start walking
because you know it's going to be good.
McCarty to seize control.
Eagles the 14th.
He's 22 under, leading by 3.
Yeah, I think it was a crucial tee shot.
Johnson, I think this is really his last issue with the golf course here
if he finds a fairway.
Hit that patented little draw, Billy Ray, down that right side.
That was gorgeous.
That is a beauty.
And I know Matt is excited to see that ball in the fairway.
There, the guards are kind of the right-center part of the green.
Tracer Technology brought to you by TrackMan.
Another iron shot from McCarty.
Kind of reminds me of the shot he hit into 16 yesterday right after the long wait.
He had to hit it to about 6 inches.
McCarty pours in another one.
3 under, his last 3 holes.
Birdie par, Eagle, he's at 23 under.
Take another look at this putt from McCarty.
Look how solid his setup is.
Posture stays in form.
Sellout crowds cheering him on in southern Utah.
It's about 305 yards to cover the right edge of that bunker.
He has been so steady with this club.
Two-shot lead on the tee, and you go down to pick up that tee that quick.
That is a great feeling, George.
215 yardage, helping Breeze and calculating the altitude.
Playing around 200 yards.
Out to the left.
What trouble on 18.
Wow.
Matt McCarty is going to win, but after this shot, by how much?
He has hit some of the best shots of the day.
14 into 16, and then here into 18, landing it into the upslope
and letting it just trickle over that big hump in the middle of this green.
That was excellent.
Meet the newest PGA Tour winner, Matt McCarty.
Took him just 3 career PGA Tour starts.
He gets the dub at the Black Desert Championship, 23 under par.
The final margin, a three-shot victory.
Take a look at that.
10 here to win.
I mean, and the flood of emotions that go through you
when you realize that you've become a PGA Tour winner.
It's like nothing else.
They're hugging each other also. He did it!
Three Corn Fairy Tour wins, and now a PGA Tour win.
Said last night after the round, you knew it would be difficult today
to try and get this first win.
The leaderboard got a little tighter there throughout this final round
that you probably wanted.
What was the biggest challenge today?
Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
Just kind of my lag putting, I guess, helped me in there.
Like, one three-putt, but I seemed like I was a long ways away all day.
But, uh, or I guess a couple.
But yeah, I don't know.
I mean, it was just, it was good.
Hard fought.
A lot of, like, tough pins with the wind picking up.
Like, just was able to, like, hit my spots well enough
and just kind of hang around and have a lot of, like, stress-free bars,
I guess, which is nice.
But yeah, and then make a few birdies when they came.
So it was nice.
It was a lot of fun and, yeah, a pretty surreal moment.
You're now a first-time winner on the PGA Tour
and just three starts on tour.
Are you surprised at how quickly you found success out here?
I mean, yeah, quickly.
I mean, I knew, like, if I played well this week after last week,
like, I would have a chance.
But to do it like this, I mean, like, I don't know
how you can kind of expect this, to be honest.
But, yeah, I don't know.
It's just a lot of fun.
And I've been, you know, working really hard.
And this year was great for me out there.
And to get out here a little early was just, like,
to get some experience was great.
And obviously this now, I mean, it's just been a crazy last few months for me.
It's been a lot of fun.
After all this success and now a first-time winner out here,
how do you think this changes your life going forward?
Yeah, I mean, financially, for sure.
But I don't know.
I'm just really excited for all the opportunities
that come with this and everything.
Like, I mean, this is what I wanted to do.
And to be able to do it, you know, this quickly
and to be able to play in all these tournaments I'm going to be able to play in
coming up is going to be really special.
So I'm just looking forward to that.
A rookie-turned-PGA Tour winner.
Matt, congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
