The Speckle Park is a breed of domestic beef cattle developed in Canada.
Speckle Park have their origins in the province of Saskatchewan.
Their further development took place along the Yellowhead Highway
between North Battleford, Saskatchewan and Spruce Grove, Alberta from 1959.
The breed started when a woman from Saskatchewan noticed a red roan heifer in her father's herd,
which she then bought. As a cow, she always produced a calf with the red roan color pattern,
regardless of the sire. It is believed that the heifer was a descendant of a Teeswater shorthorn
and a bull which had the white park color pattern. Eileen and Bill Lamont of Maidstone, Saskatchewan
bought one of these speckled heifer calves and crossed it with a black angus bull.
The resulting offspring came in a variety of color patterns, some white with black points,
some leopard colored, and some black sided with speckled hips, white top and underline,
and roan faces. The Lamont's decided to attempt to develop a new breed based on these crosses
with the aim of producing a medium-sized polled superior beef animal. The name Speckle Park is
used both in the singular and plural and denotes the speckled color pattern on the body and the
colored points of the white park breed. The Canadian Speckle Park Association was founded in 1985
and in 2006 the Speckle Park was recognized as a distinct breed by the Canadian government.
Their tagline is a balanced breed with a color bonus. Speckled park have a black skin which helps
prevent sunburn. They are medium framed, polled with early fertility and birthing ease. They
produce vigorous calves, have good milking ability, and are easily managed. On average,
mature Speckle Park males weigh about 2,200 pounds and mature females weigh between 1,300
to 1,800 pounds. Speckle Park cattle gain well on pasture or supplemented with grain
and their genetics have been exported to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Denmark.
