Ophthalmoscopy - Eye Clinical Examination - OSCE - Dr Gill
Direct Ophthalmoscopy use of the eyes is a very challenging clinical skill, incorporating both the examiner's knowledge of the retina, but also understanding the use of the ophthalmoscope
In this clinical skills tutorial, we look at the use of the direct ophthalmoscope as part of an ophthalmic examination
it should be noted that in the ideal circumstances, the room lights will be dimmed during the examination, and dilating eye drops used to improve the visualisation of the fundus
Some people may notice an ASMR effect from this clinical examination

hello my name is dr gill i've been asked
to do some ophthalmoscopy today so i
need to go and have a look at the back
of your eyes is that okay yeah okay so
to start off what we're going to do i'm
going to get the ophthalmoscope and i'm
going to have a look at your eyes from
some distance then i'm going to come
much closer to your face and have a look
at the outside of the eye and then we're
going to look much deeper that might
take me a couple of moments because i
need to focus
so i will be very close to at that point
and i'm also going to be shining a light
directly in your eye
that might be a little bit uncomfortable
but it means that we can get a good view
about anything at the back of the eye
are you happy to proceed with that yeah
super so before we go any further could
you please confirm to me your name and
date of birth abby the 7th of december
1996. super thank you
okay so before we start do you have any
problems with your vision at the moment
no
okay so we're going to begin by having a
look at your left eye
and um
if there are any problems with it please
just tell me to stop at any point okay
so i'm going to take my glasses off
and just make sure we're focused in
okay i'm just going to come a little bit
closer
and if you could look directly towards
my eye
okay i'm going to check the opposite
side as well
okay that's super i'm going to come
closer and have a look deep into the eye
so just having a look at the outside
just looking over the eyelashes
all that's good
around the people
that's ground
and then just having a look at the very
back of the eye now
okay so following the blood vessels
around
okay so if you can look to the left for
me
and then look to the far right
okay and look to the top right
and the top left please
okay
and the bottom left
and the bottom right
and then back looking directly into the
light please
thank you that all looks good
all right are you okay for us to
continue yeah
we'll do the same again on this side
so just adjusting that
right just coming in
so again just having a look over the
outside of the eyes checking over the
eyelids
and then around the iris
people
that's all that's good
and then i'm having a look back at the
eye
and following along the blood vessel
trying to find
the optic disk
and if you could look to the top right
please
okay and then the bottom right
look directly into the light for me for
a second
okay thank you were there any problems
with that no okay so everything appeared
to be normal with the isa so i could see
your optic disc and we followed along
the blood vessels those all seem to be
good as well looking directly into your
eye i couldn't see any abnormalities
there so to say that your eye health
particularly the back of the retina
looks good do you have any questions for
myself
superman thank you very much
