Kindly wear those specs back again.
Hey friends, so you are already here.
As you must have seen, little kitty has got conjunctivitis.
And what is that?
Well, in today's episode,
let us explore more about this very common childhood disease,
and answer an important question.
What causes conjunctivitis?
Zoom in!
So, one morning you wake up and feel your eyes stuck together.
You walk to the mirror rubbing your eyes due to itchiness.
And find out that your eyes have become red and puffy.
You get worried, wondering about its cause.
Well, there is nothing much to worry about my friends.
As you have caught a very common childhood problem.
Called conjunctivitis, usually known as pink eye.
Yes, conjunctivitis is a very common condition
that causes inflammation, swelling and redness of the membranes inside the eyes.
Followed by the accumulation of a clear or white,
yellow or greenish gooey liquid in the eyes.
There are multiple factors responsible for getting pink eyes.
Such as allergies or chemical agents.
But most kids get it from some notorious viruses and bacteria.
But the vital question is, what causes pink eye?
Well, before we peek into that,
first we need to have a closer look at an important layer
on the surface of the eyeball called conjunctiva.
Cue projector please!
So, this is the anatomy of your eye.
And the conjunctiva is the transparent, thin membrane that covers the front surface of the eye.
And the inner surface of the eyelids.
Its primary job is to keep the front surface of the eye moist and lubricated.
And also to protect the eye from dust, debris and infection causing microorganisms.
It also has many small blood vessels that provide nutrients to the eye and lids.
But, when a harmful virus like the one that causes common cold enters your eye,
it causes inflammation and infection of the conjunctiva.
Which eventually leads to the problem we call conjunctivitis.
It also causes the small blood vessels in the conjunctiva to become inflamed.
Which makes the whites of your eye appear reddish or pink.
Also, even though conjunctivitis is not a dangerous disease and will go away in a few days,
but it can be highly contagious.
Yes my friends, if an infected person touches his or her eyes and then unknowingly touches your hand,
and in turn you touch your eyes, the infection can be spread to you.
Coughing and sneezing are some possible routes through which this infection can spread amongst your friends.
So, it is essential for a person with pink eye to stay home from school for a short period to prevent it from spreading.
And, in case you have touched the discharge of an infected person,
washing your hands often with warm soapy water will surely help.
TRIVIA TIME!
Did you know that the treatment for pink eye varies depending on whether it is bacterial, viral or the result of environmental factors?
Yes! For bacterial pink eye, antibiotic ointments or eye drops are very useful in clearing up the condition.
But if the pink eye is viral, unfortunately it merely has to run its course.
You can help treat the symptoms of the viral pink eye with eye drops and warm or cool compresses.
But always consult your parents, guardians and most importantly, the doctor before applying anything on your eyes.
As, it can be very sensitive.
Hope you enjoyed today's episode.
