How to trim your dogs nails

We trim our dog's nails because some dog's nails are not naturally worn down. If we don't trim them
our dog's nails can actually keep growing and curl around and get embedded into the pad and
this can cause a lot of discomfort with our dogs. You can trim your dog's nails from once a week
to every couple of months depending on how active your dog is. If you hear your dog's nails on the
floor it usually means it's time to cut them. In this grooming session the equipment we'll be using
is a pair of nail trimmers, a nail file, some quick stop powder, a stocking, cotton wool and some dog
treats. The main danger of trimming our dog's toenails is cutting too much off at once and
cutting into the quick. This may cause a nail to bleed and if it does we would apply some quick
stop and then just gently apply it to the tip of the nail. If you don't have quick stop you could
use flour. The first thing we're going to do to make our dog feel a little bit more secure is
place our non-slip mat on our bench and then place our towel on top of our non-slip mat.
If your dog is a little bit of a wiggler you can sit your dog down and lean over his back, thank
you Dash, and then trim his nails from this angle. If your dog's got long hair like Dash and you're
having trouble seeing the nail through all the hair you can pop a stocking over your dog's foot
and pop the nails out of little holes that you can make beforehand and this will help you be
able to see the nail a lot more clearer. He's got clear nails so this is great for us. We can see
the pink quick through his nails. What we don't want to do, we don't want to cut into this quick.
We're going to cut from underneath and cut on a 45 degree angle and just a little bit at a time
so we don't cut into that quick and I'm just going to take off a little bit at a time
making sure I don't go into this quick on our dog's nail and if Dash is feeling extra patient
we can get our nail file and just gently take off any little sharp bits on our dog's nails.
And now we're going to demonstrate on a dog with black nails. So Miley's a black poodle,
I've put a stocking over her little paws as well so I can see her nails a lot more clearly.
We're going to continue with the same process, put our nail trimmers on a 45 degree angle and
from underneath we're just going to trim a little bit off at a time and just a little bit
and another one. Every week if we trim her nails her quick will recede and her nails will get a
lot shorter. Thank you for watching our video on nail trimming. If you liked our video please
