Welcome once again. To say good morning you remember is buongiorno. Buongiorno, two words,
and buongiorno, one word, are both acceptable spellings. Good evening is buonasera.
You'll notice that buona is with an a as opposed to buon. Buongiorno, buonasera.
This is because giorno is masculine, sera is feminine. Afternoon is pomeriggio, pomeriggio.
So intuitively, how would we say good afternoon? Buon pomeriggio, buon pomeriggio.
So how do we say good afternoon? How are you? Buon pomeriggio, come stai?
And how did we say very well, thank you? Molto bene, grazie. Simply bene, grazie is more common.
You'll remember that the word you is tu. So how would we ask and you? E tu? E tu?
Putting it all together, how would we say very well, thank you, and you? Molto bene,
grazie. E tu? Molto bene, grazie. E tu? The way to say I want, as we've already seen, is
voglio. Voglio. To ask the question do you want, it's a slight change to voi. Voi.
So you can now ask what do you want? Che cosa vuoi? Che cosa vuoi? Cosa vuoi is also acceptable
without che. I want a beer. Voglio una birra. Voglio una birra. Try saying I'm sorry,
but it's not very good. Scusa, ma non è molto buona. Scusa, ma non è molto buona.
Although there is neither a feminine nor a masculine object in this sentence,
since good refers to the beer, which is feminine, we use buona with an a. Do you have it?
Lai. Lai. You don't have it? Non lai. Non lai. Note that la is, again, feminine for low.
Another negative question. Don't you have it? Non lai. Non lai. Don't you have it for me now?
Non lai per me ora? Non lai per me ora? Why in Italian is perché. Perché. Why don't you have
it? Perché non lo hai? Perché non lo hai? Why do you want it? Perché lo vuoi? Perché lo vuoi?
Why do you want it that way? Perché lo vuoi così? Perché lo vuoi così? Why do you want it now?
Perché lo vuoi ora? Perché lo vuoi ora? Because and why in Italian are one word.
Try saying I don't have it because I don't need it.
Why do you want it? Perché lo vuoi?
I want it because it's important.
I don't want it because it's very bad.
Do you want it? Because I don't need it.
The verb to know in its infinitive form is sapere.
Remember that Italian infinitives don't have anything akin to a to in front of them. Instead
they always end in either are, ere, ire. For instance the infinitive of to want,
voglio, is volere. Therefore how would we say I want to know?
And what about I don't want to know?
I don't want to know because it's not important for me.
And how about the question do you want to know?
The formal expression for see you later is
The informal equivalent is adopo for your peers, friends and family.
Using the correct form is important. A stranger may feel disrespected otherwise.
