#DadHowDoI #RobKenney #HowTo #Perspective
hey kids nice to see you again
uh hey so i just uh
i i'm gonna do a dab chat on perspective
um and when when these type of topics
come up i just wanted to be able to
share those with you it's a little
break from the how to's but i think it's
also um stuff that i've shared with my
own kids over the years and i
wanted to share it with you so um anyway
yeah so this one's on perspective
i did talk about in my dad chat on
integrity about you know having a
long-term perspective
on the decisions you make um because
you'll you know you'll see
in your own life you were you'll be
young and boy
you know it it goes pretty quick so i
think it's important to
you know think long term about about
your life so i do have before we get
started though i have a dad joke for you
uh do you know that the first french
fries weren't actually cooked
in france they were cooked in greece
ah so anyway
um you know so getting back to you know
just thinking about your life and
thinking about
that you know in this life uh
everything's temporary in this life
you know um we visited uh
rome um in 2019
we went there and you know really got me
thinking i've shared this actually in
some of my
interviews too it really got me thinking
you know about what kind of legacy i was
going to be leaving
with my own life um because you know
you're there and
rome was an amazing city i mean still is
don't get me wrong it still is but it
was the you know the capital of the
the ancient world how kind of everything
flew or
flowed through through rome um and now
you go there and there's just
statues you know um and statues that are
you know weathered and that sort of
thing go to the forum and there's just
remnants of stuff um so it's just
interesting it really got me thinking
and you know thinking about my own life
and so i just wanted to share that
with that with you a little bit because
you know i personally am a man of faith
so i have an eternal perspective on my
life i understand that everything's
temporary
um you know um and i've shared my story
before about
you know when i that you know our family
split up when i was 14 i went to live
with my brother you know but i wasn't 14
for long i was 18
and then i was 25 and um you know then i
had a family and then i my kids are out
of the house and now i'm 56
you know so it's uh it's just
interesting it goes by so quick and i
i know that you've i'm sure you've heard
that from
uh from people that have shared that
wisdom but it is true you know when
you're young
you think oh those old people well you
know what you'll be those old people
you know you'll be them one day um we
used to look at our uncles and aunts and
who
have basically all passed now uh
you know they were kind of the old
people but you know they weren't always
old they were young too
just like you are or maybe you're my age
or maybe you're older than me but
it's just interesting i think it's time
you know it's good to stop and
and think about um about your life and
evaluate your
your life as you go along and again
think long term about your
your decisions because boy you know you
might be going through something that's
tough
but you know right around the corner
might be something amazing too right
so uh yeah you know anyway just wanted
to encourage you
with that i've also shared you know so
i've
i've been in sales um for a long time
and uh
outside sales and and it was uh there's
times you know where
boy you you get a big account win a new
account nah that's amazing and then you
lose a big account nah
you know uh so i've i've over those
years you know having a family it's
stressful and that sort of thing
uh you know because you wanted to
provide and
you know it was there was times where it
was tough but um i managed to
kind of get not too high and not too low
but you know you do want
you want to enjoy the victories but also
again don't get too low when
things don't seem to be working out for
you because
you know you might be trying it might be
something um that you're learning
through that i love this quote it says
sometimes we're tested not to show our
weaknesses but to just
to discover our strengths i love that
you know you
you might be going through something to
just show that hey you know
you you persevered through that and you
know maybe
you'll be able to share your wisdom with
somebody else that's going through some
something at some point so um there's a
poem i'm going to read at the end called
the dash
um it's often read at poems or at poems
that's often read at funerals um
i'm going to leave that in there just so
you know that i'm not gonna cut that out
uh you know we all make mistakes i try
to in my videos also
you know do it in real time as best i
can
so that you know you um you know some
cooking shows and that sort of thing you
know they leave in or they cut away and
oh
here's how you do this and then you cut
away and then it's this amazing thing
that you didn't really get to see
the struggles they had and i think
that's true also with with home
improvement channels you show oh yeah
we're gonna take out that wall whoa the
wall's gone you know
how did you do it though so um anyway
getting off on a tangent here but um
i think you get the point um so anyway
uh this poem is
uh read at funerals oftentimes called
the dash and it just talks about you
know what your
life what you know because we're all
heading to the fact that we're all going
to end up
you know passed from this life
eventually and so i i think it's
it's pretty profound so i'm just going
to go ahead and read that right now
so it's called the dash and the poem's
by linda ellis
and i've asked for permission to read
this and um
you can go to the dashpoem.com uh
to to learn more about it if you wanted
to but
it goes like this i read of a man
who stood to speak at the funeral of a
friend
he referred to the dates on the
tombstone tombstone
from the beginning to the end he noted
that
first came the date of birth and spoke
of the following date with tears
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash
between those years for that dash
represents
all the time they spent alive on earth
and now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth
for it matters not how much we own the
cars the house
the cash what matters how we live
and love and how we spend our dash
so think about this long and hard are
there things you'd like to change
for you never know how much time is left
that
still can be rearranged to be less quick
to anger
and show appreciation more and love the
people in our lives like we've never
loved before if we treat each other with
respect and more often wear a smile
remembering that this special dash might
only last
a little while so when your eulogy
is being read with your life's actions
to rehash
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you lived your dash
anyway i i i just think that's powerful
because you know
you know your your tombstone is what
you're gonna
leave behind but um besides
what you've done for others truly so um
you know there's this a song by
switchfoot of course i'm going to
bring switch foot into this right
because if you know
if you watch my videos you know i really
love them i think they got a
great way of saying things and
it's as simple as life is short live it
well
it's true you know your life is but a
vapor it goes by quick so
um you know be thinking about your
decisions your choices as you go along
and
i'm sure you'll do well so anyway just
wanted to encourage you it's a good
good chance to to reflect and think
about things funerals tend to do that
you know you tend to
kind of reevaluate your life when you go
to a funeral but then
you know a couple of days go by and then
you've moved on so
you know it's kind of keep that in in
your head to to think about
your decision so anyway thanks for
watching god bless you
and uh we'll see you next time
