Hello friends and welcome to Gardening with Creekside. Today we are going to take
a fall garden tour of all the gardens here at the house. It is our goal to give you these garden
tours at least once a season. Spring, summer, fall, and winter. That way you can see how the garden
changes throughout the seasons and just to show you some real real life gardens here in North
Carolina zone 8a. So we're going to show you what things look like and because it is fall
we are naturally already thinking about next year. What are the things that we're going to be doing
for next year's gardens. Prime example here we are in this I don't know half circle shaped flower bed
right along our driveway. The star of the bed right now are these three encore azaleas. This
is autumn twist and it's really fun because on one plant you will get a range of colors. You can get
the whites with the pink in them. You can get the hot pinks but as you see these are the three
beautiful shrubs that are in here but other than that this bed is just empty. This has been kind of
a quote problematic bed for us and so I think what the plan is is that we are going to get some more
of the autumn twist and continue those out from this side. Maybe we get three or four for each
side and add those on that and then down here in the front we're going to put some perfecto
moon dove azaleas from Proven Winners. This is just going to be a azalea bed because both the
encore azaleas and the perfecto moon does from Proven Winners they're repeat bloomers. So you
get this gorgeous display in the spring you get some flowers in the fall summer and then in the
fall you get another beautiful display. So I think that's what we're going to do because
yeah this has just been one of those beds where it just kind of like always gives you some problems
and you're just not quite sure what's going on with it but the azaleas are loving it. So we're
just going to turn it into an azalea flower bed. So there you go. I mean you can't get more classic
and iconic than that in the south right. We're going to head up here to the berm and we're going
to talk about again how things look now and then what they're going to be in the spring and the
summer. I can't tell yesterday it rained all day and so Brenna was in the house so she is most
excited to be outside today running around and romping so I'm sure that she will keep you
entertained with her antics as we go through the tour today. We're going to start on the other side
of the berm right. We call this the nursery side because it's on the public nursery side
of the of the berm. So we are blessed with tons of hardwood trees here in North Carolina right.
So these are trees that are just native. The vast majority I would say 99.9 percent of the trees on
our property we did not plant and so in November the leaves begin to fall and they are falling. So
between the maples on the driveway which we did plant we have those leaves and then of course
all the oaks and the other maples and the poplars around here. So this is that season where all the
leaves are falling. Basically we try to keep the driveway clear, the walking paths clear. Once all
of the leaves do fall then a lot of times we'll come in here in the flower beds and clean them up
mulch those leaves and put them back down. But we do that because like our sedums you can't even see
the sedums because they've been covered up by the maple leaves. Coming through right there are
messes and successes as always. Things that we're looking at right so we had three of the
Sunjoy Neo barberries. There were three here. I lost one I believe I don't remember if it was the last
winter or early spring and then this poor little guy is getting covered up by the thunderhead pine.
So note to self what I'm going to do is I lost a plant this one's getting swallowed up so I will
take this one dig it up and transplant it and bring it back over here right. Little things that we do
but this thunderhead this is a Japanese black pine y'all it loves this spot. This is a really fun
what I consider like a Dr. Seuss tree right. It will have more of a wide habit than a tall habit
and it just continues to grow and grow and grow. I don't even think I fertilized it this year.
It's just in this great soil here where we added when we made the beds but it's just such a fun
tree and the birds love it as well coming in and putting in all sorts of little bird nests and
habitats in there for them. So they are doing really really well. Your perennial hibiscus
this is going to be the time of year where they are starting to look really rough. This is holy
grail of course right so we have holy grail through these beds. This is their natural progression.
This is what they do depending on where you are in the country and your climate. Yours may already
be complete sticks or if you're warmer yours may still be flowering some. So what we do is we just
let ours completely defoliate and then depending on where you are if you're in the south I have
for years went ahead before I knew better I went ahead and cut mine to the ground because I didn't
want to see sticks and then I learned from Proving Winters you're supposed to actually not cut them
until you know like in the springtime but here in the south because we don't get snow we have
very mild winters. Once you let them completely defoliate and then you can come to the ground
I've never had an issue with that. It just depends on where you are it's your garden
you do what's best for you but yeah I just want to show you this is what perennial hibiscus look
like in December. Daylilies of course are oh my goodness so prolific. They will eventually
once we have a a hard hard freeze most of this foliage will die completely back and then you can
easily just pull it out not a problem whatsoever. Your perennial grasses this is like Niagara Falls
right it's taking on those fall hues it is taking on the brown you can leave it if you like or if
you want to go ahead and cut it back you can do that. I typically leave mine for the winter interest
and then in like mid late February I will cut it to the ground. This is the honeysuckle from Proving
Winters this is the sensation. I've got two of them on the berm and I've never pruned them before
and this thing was just getting kind of out of control y'all so I went ahead and shaped it up.
It blooms on new growth and so I was just trying to tidy it up a little bit so if you have a
and it's popping out new growth already I mean it is still quite warm here and so we've got lots of
growing still happening in our gardens but just so I went ahead and pruned her up a little bit
and then sweet talker viburnum oh my gosh y'all there are two in this bed on side of the purple
plum. I love this shrub this is a definitely a southern shrub sweet talker is going to be more
upright than it is wide. Later or earlier on in the season I gave it a little bit of a shape up
but it puts on little teeny tiny pink flowers in late winter that has a lovely fragrance so this
is a fun interest to have in the garden right and then like design wise so we have the sweet talker
the purple plum and then there's another sweet talker over here so it kind of keeps it balanced.
People ask all the time when do you prune your butterfly bushes? I've learned the hard way
kind of like I learned with the hibiscus I also learned with my butterfly bushes. You want to
leave these alone until you begin to see new growth in the spring so once you see new growth
in the spring on your plants then you want to go ahead and give it a haircut. It does bloom on new
growth and so we want to give it a nice shape up once you start to see new growth in the spring.
Once you see new growth popping out on the on the stems then you can give it a haircut otherwise
just leave it alone right so I'm not going to touch these until next late spring once I see
that new growth coming up on those. These by the way are pugster pinkers love that nice short
petite habit on those. Now as we go through the gardens y'all you're going to see weeds.
There are spring weeds, summer weeds, fall weeds, winter weeds and there's a weed for every season
and this is just something that we have to come through and periodically we just have to come
through and pick them. They're not hard to pull we just got that rain but it just takes a little
bit of time to come through and constantly weed. That is a project that will never end in the garden.
Now look at this now we did get a day of rain yesterday this is the queen nectarine agastache
and it is just performing its little head off. It is doing great even just when I hit it the
little pollinators were coming out of it. Beautiful nectarine color flowers on it
tends to be very drought tolerant the pollinators love it beautiful fun color here in the garden
and then yeah you just start to see things as they're starting to go dormant right the smoke
bush this is that winecraft gold. I pruned it in the late winter last year and you can see
like now how much it grew so here this is where I pruned it right so pruned them pretty far down
this tree shrub loves this area and so it gets good growth on it. I don't know if I will prune
it again this year or if I will go ahead and let it flower we'll see what we're going to do
probably let it go ahead and put the blooms on this year give it that smoke habit and then
maybe after that then I can go ahead and prune it just a little bit.
And then this is one of those plants that you don't realize how much it grows until you go back
and you look at old pictures so these are my north pole arborvitaes and oh my gosh are they
not fantastic they are growing and doing so well we've got this lovely hedge of them right here
and they have just been very happy trees the idea is to create a screen right so that we have
some privacy between the nursery and our house and also it is on the end of the berm so it gives
weight down here we've got these beautiful evergreens here where we had the thunderhead
that same kind of texture dark green evergreen habit to it color to it and then we repeat that
but with a totally different tree and a different habit thunderhead is more wide these are more
columnar but yeah loving how great these guys are doing and when I say we do nothing to them
we've done nothing to them this bed is on irrigation but we water it once every couple
of weeks when it's when it's dry it's not on an everyday basis I can't water my flower beds every
day otherwise with my clay soil my plants will start to drown but they are doing absolutely
great bugs don't like them love them a ton and then as we come around to the house side of the
just to kind of give you an update on how everybody is doing here you were with me when we
planted the kentsley's ghost she's hanging out doing well nothing really to report so no news
is good news as far as I'm concerned right now she's very healthy she's green she is alive she's
perky we are good right that first year they sleep next year they creep and then they leap
hopefully we will see lots of good new growth next growing season on that but yeah doing well
as our look at these camellias these are the october magic rubies gorgeous sun loving sesanqua
camellia from our friends at southern living beautiful double red flower on it again they
lost some leaves some petals in the rain yesterday but overall I mean they are gorgeous and we see
them from the front porch so very happy to report those are doing well one thing that
when we had helene come through hurricane helene which was I don't know six six weeks ago I guess
because of course hurricanes wind so this is the pink cascade 2 butterfly bush and it got whipped
pretty good in the wind so it got pushed back some you can see a little bit of the roots were
exposed right here I'm not overly concerned about how it looks right now because this is that
butterfly bush and we prune it hard right just like your pugsters so when that time comes I can
prune it really hard and it will flush back out but that's just one of those perils and with those
heavy winds associated with a hurricane the twisting and pulling and you have all that foliage
she was in full bloom so she got beat up a little bit but strong root system and it will be absolutely
fine now this part of the berm has always been a little bit uh I don't know questionable is that
is that the word like we came up with a design with the boxwoods and then once we put it in
we're like I mean you like it but you don't love it right I know some of y'all had some strong
opinions on like the shape of the boxwoods and how we did it and and all that things but we put
tons of annuals in here right during the summer so massive color explosion my husband loves his
color in the summer and because we sit on the front porch so much like we see this right here
so we want massive color explosion but it is you know it is a chore to to plant all those annuals
to maintain them then you have to take them out and so forth and so on so the idea is that we are
going to um redesign this portion this center portion of of the bed whether we do it this fall
or we do it in the spring time will tell exactly when we do it but these are all sprinter boxwoods
some of them are doing great some of them are a little bit on the struggle bus because of
of certain like some of the times the annuals were covering the boxwoods so you'll see some
of them that have some brown spots in them but the idea is that we want to incorporate
more shrubs more variety of perennials in there with pockets of annuals that we will put in
coming this uh december i have quite the load of tulips coming and so in the berm we are going to
do big apricot so big apricot is a single color obviously as its name suggests it's gonna be a
nice big tulip that has that beautiful kind of that uh pinky orangey color to it and will stand
out really nice so we'll put it both on this side and in little pockets on the other side
of the berm as well so we'll have a beautiful tulip display i'm telling you y'all if you're
going to be coming through here in like mid-march you need to make a point to stop by and visit us
because we have got a ton of tulips that are going to be blooming for you to see i'm not calling
ourselves biltmore i'm just saying biltmore was the inspiration so we're going to have lots of
gorgeous spring flowering bulbs that you can come and you know just see here in the gardens at the
nursery so all right let's head over back to the house and check out some of those gardens
so here we are and basically where we started so the azaleas are just over to my right shoulder
y'all this is why we love lantana in the south dear heavens this is a lantana from our friends
at proven winters this is citron and citron is a softer yellow than um than lemon tart right so
it's a little bit of a softer one color but uh she's happy she loves this spot i will say also
this is not on irrigation so when we first planted it for about the first two weeks i had to watch it
make sure it got plenty of water um i would know if the plants were happy because they would be
perky if they got dry they would start to get a little limp and shrivelly you give them some
water and they perk right back up when i say we have not watered this lantana um except for those
first couple of weeks when we first planted it back in april um literally have done nothing to it
nothing and this is how insane it is there actually is a perennial hibiscus in the center
completely taken over by the citron but it is beautiful it is vigorous it is happy uh the bugs
don't like it japanese beetles don't like it it loves the sun it handles the heat and humidity
like a champion i mean this is why and here we are in november and it is still blooming and
absolutely beautiful now the depending on where you live will determine whether your lantana is
a perennial for you we treat our lantana as an annual because it can be quite iffy as to whether
or not it will come back and because we have display gardens right and we have the signature
experience where people are coming through we like to switch things up um especially you know
in certain areas like this so we treat it as an annual at some point we will come here in and
take it out but for now it's still doing good so we're going to let her go the day lilies you were
with us i trimmed the boxwoods one day and the andrew was you know pruning back the day lilies
they are doing well they all have bounced back quite nicely the weeds have also bounced back
quite nicely but that's you know that's another thing uh and so the boxwoods are doing well as
nice new growth on them and they have had enough time to put on that new growth and get hardened
off before we get a hard freeze so that's where you have to determine and know your zone and your
growing area as far as you don't want to prune your box was too late in the season and then they
put on new growth and when you get a freeze it burns all of that new growth all of this new
growth that you see this bright green um has had time to harden off so once we get a freeze
this will not turn brown basically i try to come through about once a year
realistically once a year is all i can handle on pruning the boxwoods and but they have done
really well we believe this is winter gem we planted these eons ago and we don't really
remember but we believe that they are winter gems now uh the little shade garden here on the side of
house i've done some cleanup but i have left some things obviously as well so we still have
annuals in here like this is the illumination um broalia endless illumination broalia so we've got
that we've got some of the rockapuko impatiens the impatience are starting to look a little thin
they certainly could probably come out but then you've got euphorbia right this is this is diamond
snow i mean y'all it's still very very happy um but that's a personal preference you could come in
here and clean it up if you wanted to obviously soon i will do that but that's just not been kind
of on the the top of my radar lately now give you an update on the white by the gate camellia
this is a japonica camellia and when you think about your camellias you have sesanquas which
bloom in the fall they have little thumbprint size leaves on them obviously this is going to
be a bigger leaf your japonicas have a bigger leaf on them and that's important to know because of the
bloom time sesanquas are blooming now just like our october magic rubies are blooming now
japonicas will bloom roughly depending on where you are somewhere in that january to march white
by the gate i am training it on this trellis to kind of keep a tight habit to it so i will come in
periodically and i will attach those limbs to the trellis just to keep it a nice tight habit
white by the gate is covered in buds absolutely covered if you see those big huge buds on it
so exciting because this has a stunning pure white double bloom very formal it is gorgeous
so i am very excited about seeing this baby bloom later on in the winter time one of the key things
especially when you're trying to get your camellias established is consistent water in those
hot dry months right you don't want them to form their flower buds and then they go through an
period of drought they will drop those flower buds so we want the flower buds so give them a
good deep watering at least once a week in the hot months where we don't have consistent rain
you can see some hostas are hanging in there some of them are going away it's just different
hostas have different dormancy periods and that is what it is and y'all you can clearly tell that
i did not get things neat and fancy for you around here because you can see uh this is just
this is just real life gardening showing you uh what it looks like so maybe if your garden looks
like that i don't want you to feel discouraged or disheartened um it's the fall embrace it and
it is what it is of course you have been with us through this entire project of the terrace garden
everybody is doing well what we need to do is still we have i still have not done it yet it's
just a thing called time is at the least i need to get this mulched if i get it the irrigation
down on it this winter then that's great and if not then i will just do it in the spring but at
the bare minimum i need to get mulch on this to retain that moisture clean it up keep it neat
looking but you can see all of the oak leaves are falling so um there's that and then you were with
just the other day when we planted both the shrubs mimi and i added the perennials in here
and everybody is doing great i knew that the rain was going to be coming and so that's why i really
wanted to get the perennials in here before that rain hit that way everybody gets nice and watered
in and doing really well so as far as these two beds there's nothing else to be done just kind
of keep an eye on them maintain them but they are good to go the next thing that we will do
is up here we will need to go ahead and fill up our boxes right so these are the
modern garden boxes from vego nice tall deep boxes they are bottomless and so you can determine how
you want to fill up your boxes we will put landscape fabric down on the bottom and up the
side just a little bit that way when we water when the rains come we don't have potting soil
shooting out the bottom of them so that's what we're going to do and then we're probably we're
not going to fill them completely up with soil we're probably going to use some natural debris
whether it is some of the pine logs uh you know the hardwood kind of things put in the bottom
fill up a little bit of it and then you know use a good layer of our potting soil for these
the plan for these boxes is that these will be cut flowers so in the spring well in december we
have to get this done before december because that's when all the tulips arrive and i have
quite the collection of tulips and jonquils that are going to go in here for the spring and they
are going to be absolutely stunning i cannot wait so that is the plan uh i still have to get
the obelisk in its place get the rose planted but the rose is just hanging out here she's just
sitting in the in the in her pot right here in the bed with uh has a salsa underneath her she's
putting on new growth she is happy so you know let her be let me give you an update on this y'all
remember we planted this together i have loved this container so much and look at the peppers
they're starting to turn uh so jerry can you see where these are um the peppers they're going to
be orange you know that was the big question what color will the peppers turn they started out
yellow we didn't know um exactly what variety of peppers these were well turns out they're going
to be orange which will work perfectly the cabbage both of that well we got a kale and a
cabbage doing really well we had did have some cool nights uh not currently but we did um so we
were getting some color on that but i mean those cabbages gorgeous so we've really been loving
this whole little container right here and then uh to hit this area for you yes i still have the
irrigation line this is one that we're going to reuse for the beds but to give you an idea
an update here on the steps going up to the chicken coop yes the leaves are falling they
are a plenty but you can see here that those perennials that we planted are doing so well of
course these were the ice plants right and look like look at that that was one plant y'all and
look how much it has grown so it they are very happy again the first two weeks i had to come out
here and i had to water all of this because we were not getting any rain this is not on irrigation
so those first two weeks i had to bring i had to bring the hose down there's a yellow jacket i had
to bring the hose down water them make sure that they were happy and since then those roots have
gotten established and it's all hands off so yeah i mean okay yeah he's he's mad i don't know why that
that yellow jacket's mad we don't like yellow jackets um but yeah i mean everybody's doing
great and i love the fact like you can see that um the creeping jenny putting on lots of pretty
new growth so it's doing well the adjugas are doing well um every everybody is very happy
in this area so we're just going to kind of maintain it get the leaves blown off get some
fresh mulch down if we have some um some bare spots but yeah this is just something that we just
sit and maintain and let me show you this this is very exciting look over here y'all so remember
you were with me and we were planting um let me try to find you a good one that you can see over
here um we planted the anemones and the poppies well look look at them all popping up in here
so this is a great time if you're in zones like 7b and warmer this is a great time to get
those anemones ranunculus poppies get them in the ground because uh they're gonna go ahead and
sprout like they are now but they won't flower until the spring so last year i did that in one
flower bed out front i'll show you those in a little bit and man they were gorgeous all right
let's move on to the backyard now all right so as the sun comes out here we have um these are the
the mexican sunflowers i love these plants y'all i had planted intentionally planted i think five
last year and they receded themselves so this year you will see that i have them throughout
and you've got bumblebees you've got butterflies you've got beautiful pollinators all over these
and yes they can be kind of unruly in the fact of if you stake them they do really well
this one i think got blown down with helene but it literally got knocked down it does not care
and it continues to bloom it will reseed itself and i'm happy just to let it reseed itself and
then next year i can pull out any ones that i don't want in certain areas um but yeah this is
mexican sunflower you start it from seed super easy to do it is a gorgeous plant the
berry bushes are doing quite nicely we've got of course all of the um the blueberry bushes down
here and then the blackberry bushes up here quite a few of you commented that you have the pink
lemonade blueberry bushes and that you love them even more than traditional blueberries so um that
is exciting to hear cannot wait to taste these babies next year give you an update on the um
the dahlias we talked about that how they had a rough year but y'all look there is beauty in
the disaster look at that is that not gorgeous so don't ever give up unless they're clearly
completely dead um let them let them be and we've got reds and whites and uh yeah so i need to
actually come out here and cut some and enjoy i mean i have like three blooms but you know why not
go ahead and enjoy them for sure um this flower bed right here is it needs some attention as far as
the sunflowers in the back the suncredible sunflowers they're done so we could go ahead
and pull them out the uh the salvia which is this is the rockin deep purple it could come out and
this you know this the lictrum right here not the lictrum this uh tethonia i never can remember
i just call it mexican sunflower anyway this was a volunteer and it's right literally in the middle
of an iris so need to kind of clean this out a little bit but while the pollinators are still
loving them um then i'm just going to leave them alone because we've got the butterflies and all
the pollinators here so we'll just leave them for now but this is the eyeliner iris clearly loves
this spot um will not need to put nearly as many annuals in here as i did this year because my
perennials are growing and uh you've got the vertigo grass which is an annual right but then
the climbing sweet potato vine so if you need a quick seasonal uh something to cover a climb
this is it this is the upside key lime sweet potato vine from proven winners there also comes
in black this was four plants they were grande size plants when i put them in here and y'all
dear heavens i've been coming in and cutting on them some and giving them to the chickens because
the chickens love to eat the sweet potato vine but yeah there you go i mean just a crazy display here
of gorgeous color so as we move around um i wanted to show you the camellias back here this is early
wonder the rain did not do us a ton of favors with these guys yesterday but this is early wonder
which is it's called early wonder because it is a japonica but it blooms early like a sesanqua
this is from southern living you can see how it's absolutely covered in buds um it is a beautiful
like a double bloom typically the hotter pink this is a little bit of an older bloom on this one
but i am just absolutely loving these early wonder camellias as far as i'm concerned one can never
have too many camellias in a southern garden right and then coming around i know we've talked about
this before generous gardener she's very generous she is uh quite vigorous in her growth and clearly
jenny has not kept up with her uh as far as the pruning so this is the eyesore this is jenny just
being real with you on the video and showing you the messes and the successes um so i've got to get
her either pruned or put back together jerry says pruner um she is very very generous in her growth
there are two plants one on each side looking back i probably easily could have gotten away with
one plant but i was a new rose gardener at the time and had no idea that this thing would be
so happy right here but it clearly is so there you go on that we'll see if i'll see if i can get jerry
to come through and tippy-toe i'll let you go ahead and walk past me honey you got it okay um
he he fusses at me every time he comes through because he gets attacked we were just here um
with these beds everything's doing quite well we'll move on to the back because we haven't been
here in the back we got the anemones and the ranunculus is planted which is the perfect time
having that great rain that came through so that was lovely we talked about um go ahead and maybe
taking out these are the summerific lilac crushes because there are three of them right here and
they were just again love their spot so we're thinking uh next spring before they come back
that we'll go ahead and take them out and move them if we don't do it before um this winter
i want to come in and redesign the backyard beds um just thinking about how i have them designed
i don't love these beds and i want to love them um while there are parts that i do enjoy there
are other parts that i just do not um like very much right now if you have an opportunity to get
a ginkgo y'all you need to get a ginkgo for your garden ginkgos are so adaptable so many different
zones that they can um can go in this is a maidenhair ginkgo so it's a very petite short
more like a shrub than it is going to be a tree but ginkgos of course are famous for those
beautiful shaped leaves and then their fall color the quote bad thing about ginkgos is that they
don't hold their leaves for very long i'll show you the ginkgo tree she's basically naked this
one is holding on a little bit longer it was later to turn but just such a fun ginkgo shrub this
maidenhair so we have that one of our great successes has been this tree we absolutely
love this this is a um hinoki slender slender hinoki whichever you want to say it um beautiful
evergreen it is not prickly at all and very much a dr seuss tree you can see that she's got this
fun funky habit uh limbs coming out everywhere her top she was leaning then she perked back up
so that has that really fun habit to it which we love we had great annuals in here this summer
but those annuals really started to hide and encroach on the hinoki slender so when we do
our redesign and when i plant annuals in here this coming summer i will give her plenty of
room so that you can really enjoy and appreciate the beauty of this tree but yeah this is one that
has just been a great success for us again done nothing the bugs don't like it and so if you start
to see some brown in your evergreens in the this time of year completely natural this is when like
pine trees drop their pine needles so if you start to see brown don't freak out it is okay now this
is this is princeton century this is that ginkgo tree that i was telling you about and um literally
was absolutely stunning and then the next day probably 50 of the leaves are gone and then now
basically all the leaves are gone with your ginkgos if you want to get a tree just keep in
mind that when you get it um if you get a female cultivar they will produce seeds and they do not
have a very pleasant odor princeton century is a male so if you can find a princeton century
those are male trees so they will not put on fruit and they do not stink but you get the gorgeous
color off of them so that's just a something on that and then so that will stay in the when we
redesign the bed and then this is a harry louder walking stick now harry louder does not really
have a ton of like summer interest to it but it does have a ton of winter interest to it and
jerry's going to show you all of these contorted limbs this is what it does it has a fun funky
shape i mean this is completely zigzag in here right and so in the summertime when you have
these big green kind of leathery leaves on it it's hard to see those fun shapes of the limbs
but in the winter time as those fall off you really see how contorted it is so harry louder
sticks um harry louder walking stick i think it is so that is a really fun and it'll put on like
these little seed pods in the winter time they kind of dangle from it so yeah this one definitely
stained like i got a day lily right here it needs to be moved it's too close to here um so yeah you
so um here in the south i don't know about y'all but if you get briars or thorns
in your garden uh they are like my arch nemesis because this spring mimi and i were in here
and y'all i dug and dug and pulled roots and pulled roots and pulled roots of these briars
clearly i made it mad and it just came back with a vengeance so it has completely like overtaken
this whole part of the garden and these are not little briars every once in a while that have
thorns these are the kind of thorns that will get in there and absolutely tear you to shreds so
we're trying to figure out what is the best method of getting this out because it has just taken over
this corner of the garden and there's not one clump like it has sent out runners and is going
everywhere so uh this might be a job for the excavator to come in here because yeah it's
not fun at all but the highlight also unfortunately she's gone as far as like her
interest is done um is the autumn flame maple so this autumn flame you uh oh my gosh she is just
the most gorgeous red maple we've got lots of pictures of it blooming not blooming with its
fall foliage on it is a great shade tree in the summertime right gives you lovely shade but man
in the fall absolutely stunning foliage on it and does an amazing job and so we were all kind of sad
when she dropped all of her leaves but such is life such is the season but like here's a here's
one of the ones a leaf that still has that gorgeous i mean flaming red orange color to it so
doing quite nicely this little section right you were with us when we did the um the generator for
the house we're still still waiting for it to get hooked up and then we joke that we have a green
submarine in our yard because the gas company came and brought us the gas tank because you have to
have obviously a power source for the generator so this is a thousand gallon tank it looks just
like a submarine the gas company told us that we could bury it so that's what we're going to do and
so when you bury a tank they send you a green one who knew like we could have green i was like hey
we could just stick that in the back and it'd be fine but we are going to bury it it will be back
behind um the poplar trees and so you'll just see the little top of it sticking out but we just have
to wait until the electric is all about timing with the electrician and making sure that everything
happens but we can do that ourselves thank goodness because we have the equipment so if you're
wondering what the green submarine is in the yard that's just the the tank the gas tank that will
fuel the whole house generator now come over here one last thing that i want to show you because we
talked about this you were with me when we planted more anemones in the yard i mean in the flower bed
y'all look at them are they not fantastic this is amazing now yes there are a smidge of weeds
every once in a while in here but all of these are those anemones and they are going to be
stunning we still have more that are popping up that so they're still emerging and coming out
but these things will be able to handle our winter so it'll be nice and green throughout
the winter it is not a problem whatsoever and then come gosh it was like early march and they
started blooming and anemones make the best cut flowers and they just bloom and bloom and bloom
even we had one time i had cut some and the vase had dried out and they were literally hanging over
the vase i was going to toss them and megan was like well i'm gonna just put some water in and
see what happens in an hour they were all standing straight back up and just as happy as could be
so if you have a chance to get some anemone corms get some and get them in the ground especially if
you're in the south i get all mine from eden brothers i just love them and they do really
well and they will be perennials for us so when we planted some of those anemones of course they
we already had some of last year's that were coming up and then also the star of the show
currently right now are our tea olives so tea olives which is a sweet osmanthus or a sweet
olive depends on where you live but they have these little tiny creamy orange white flowers on
them that have the most unbelievable fragrance to them absolutely love them we have four of them
right here by the front porch and we'll sit on the porch and have our coffee either in the morning or
in the afternoon and that wind will come by and i'm just like oh jerry it smells so good every time
i talk about the tea olives i always recommend to you if you know a tea olive and you love the
fragrance of the tea olive i'm telling you the closest thing that i have ever smelled which so
reminds me of it is the candle it's the laurel candle from laurel mercantile and so it's uh they
are fantastic i love that candle and it definitely reminds you of that sweet osmanthus but um that is
the fall garden tour here at the house uh the beds just trying to give you that idea of how everything
looks in november right so we will come back and do another one in the winter um so that way you
can really see what the gardens look like in spring summer fall and winter that way we can all
kind of share in the messes and successes together it appears we have a delivery coming
so we're going to wrap it up and y'all have an amazing day and we'll see you next video bye friends
