MAGICAL MOOREA (and its superfriendly Sting Rays) | Tranquilo Sailing Around the World | Ep. 95

Alright, we're off to Morea.
You can just see it on the horizon.
Morea looks just spectacular.
There's Apanohu.
We're about to jibe and head across.
Okay, it's clear.
Jibing.
There's so much wind, I mean...
Five scope, so it's good.
It's so funny, we'd only just dropped anchor
when our mates Peli Zeno here
pull up in the dinghy with the wakeboard
and they've invited Aidan to go.
It's his first time, so very exciting.
I guess that's what you get from an Olympic sailor.
Pete.
And Zenon, his son, I'm sure he's going to be a world champion
in something, I don't know which sport
but he's good at lots of sport.
And he's got this real
real can-do attitude like his dad.
Waiting eight days for this
since we've been in marinas.
Can't get in.
So good.
How good is that?
This well may be the best anchorage in the world.
Apart from the setting,
it's all sand, so you don't have to worry about
the bombings, you don't have to have
any concerns about corals snagging
your anchor or your chain.
This water is so beautiful, you can actually drink it.
Don't try that one.
It's just an amazing spot.
People say you either love
Moreo or Bora Bora.
I don't get to love Moreo.
We haven't been to Bora Bora yet.
We can love them both, Phil.
Unfortunately, Phil and Zenon are leaving us tonight.
They're heading up to Raiatea, northwest of here.
It's about a 90 nautical mile
trip, so it's perfect for an overnighter.
We might
just catch them in Bora Bora
in a few weeks.
The good news is, La Segal is coming through.
They've had a few things they need to sort out
in Papeete, but
they're now coming through
the channel now.
No, not that bad.
Next time, I've got to remember
you've got to check the depth, because
I was this close to the bottom.
Pity of cats, they don't need much rough.
Okay, Lucy and I have a mission.
We're going to christen Lucy's
new freediving fins by rescuing
Tor's bucket, which is in 10 meters at the back
of Kia, the back of their boat.
You realise that the story with the bucket,
that's all bullshit.
I haven't been here for two weeks.
Very smart. I like it.
Don't ever trust a Norwegian.
They say the French are smooth.
Forget it.
Beautiful stingray right under you.
Right in the back,
and slowly up.
Namaste.
Hello Tiki's.
We're coming for you soon.
Very graceful ladies.
Very graceful.
Steady, go.
Beautiful.
Oh yeah.
We're having a ripper of a time
in Opanohu, snorkelling,
diving off boats, hiking,
hanging out with the other boats.
We're going to head up
off one of the resorts.
We're going to feed some sharks up there.
Then we need to find
an underwater tiki that's reportedly
around here, and
then Elle and I want to go and
dive off the wall out that way
on the edge of the reef
to find the lemon sharks.
A bit too exciting.
Yeah, they scare me more than sharks
They gave me a kiss.
They do love me.
Cyclists, farmland.
Yeah, we're definitely in France.
Okay, to me this looks like
northern rivers, which is
northern New South Wales before Queensland
and Australia, where my mum's family were
dairy farmers, so it's got these flat
areas, very green, lots of
water, and then it's volcanic, so
not quite as spectacular as this, but these
kind of mountains, cows,
horses, same sort of thing.
But I didn't expect this here.
This commemorates James
Cook's three voyages across the
Pacific. He landed in
Opinohu Bay in 1777.
Well, that's it. Goodbye
Opinohu. It's been a fantastic few
days. We're going to sit by Cook.
It's supposed to be beautiful, just have a look.
And then we're off to Taha,
just north of Wairarita.
There's a coral garden we want to check out.
I loved our
time there in Opinohu Bay.
It was basically the commune that
our friends and I have been talking about
for years. But the benefit
is, so Lassie Gale,
the only cat, they were the party
boat. They were the place,
the communal area where you have dinner,
kids hang out, lots of
toys, paddle boards, kites, whatever.
And every good
commune, like communally owned
land, has a
party place and a hang out place.
The beauty here is we each have our
separate boats and whenever we need
to, we leave. So we're leaving ahead
of all the others and then we'll
catch up and do the whole thing again.
Somewhere like Bora Bora.
