This is the Honor Magic V3, the thinnest foldable flagship smartphone,
and I've partnered with Honor to give you a preview and explain how they've managed to achieve this.
And we're going to get technical.
So we've had foldable smartphones for a few years now,
and one of the pain points has been that in order to achieve the folding technology,
foldable smartphones are generally thicker and heavier compared to regular smartphones.
But as a result of market demands and innovation,
foldable phones have been getting thinner and lighter with an aim to break the barrier
between a foldable smartphone and a flagship bar smartphone,
so that when you're using a foldable smartphone closed, it feels like a normal smartphone,
but when you open it, it transforms into a large screen tablet,
giving you a range of new use cases.
Now, there are a few key factors which can affect the thickness of a folding smartphone,
including the hinge, the battery, body materials, and microstructures.
The Honor Magic V3 sets a new record for the thinnest foldable flagship,
with a folded thickness of just 9.2 millimeters,
and it achieves an impossible 4.35 millimeter thickness when unfolded.
In addition to that, its weight of just 226 grams is even lighter than many bar-shaped flagships.
The industry's thinnest foldable design is enhanced by innovative materials and microstructures.
So firstly, let's talk about the hinge, which is a significant part of any foldable.
The Honor Magic V3 features the industry's slimmest Honor SuperSteel hinge,
which gives it superior resilience and reliability to withstand the rigors of daily use.
The Honor SuperSteel hinge is built with the industry's strongest hinge material,
the second-generation Honor SuperSteel, which has a tensile strength of 2,100 megapascals,
and compared to ordinary steel materials, the thickness is reduced by 41%.
And by slimming down the hinge body thickness to an industry-leading 2.84 millimeters,
there is more space available for structural reinforcement in its supporting structure.
Now, compared to industry-standard solutions with only one set of swing arms,
the Honor Magic V3 adds an extra set of swing arms to the Honor SuperSteel hinge.
This design significantly enhances the hinge's resilience
by an impressive 1,250% compared to the Honor Magic V2.
So with the support of these upgraded materials and brand new architecture,
the Honor Magic V3 takes the resilience and folding reliability of the hinge to the next level.
It can withstand up to 500,000 folding cycles,
ensuring durable performance, and the device has obtained the SGS Durability Certification,
which further validates its durability and quality.
The Honor Magic V3 also sets a new standard in durability,
with its use of a highly resilient fiber as the body material,
replacing conventional fiberglass to increase overall resilience.
Honor is the first smartphone brand using this fiber,
which has a strength of up to 5,800 megapascals,
and is known as a superfiber of the 21st century,
surpassing the strength of other materials like Kevlar and carbon fiber.
And thanks to this, the Honor Magic V3 achieves up to 40 times impact resistance
compared to other flagship smartphones.
Next, let's take a look at the battery technology.
The battery in a smartphone takes up a large amount of space,
and it also adds to the thickness.
And to keep this as thin as possible without compromising on capacity,
Honor is the first brand to incorporate emerging battery innovations
from the electric vehicle industry into smartphones.
By harnessing the potential of silicon-based anode material,
Honor has built a stable and powerful electric chemical structure
of up to 10% in the negative electrode,
the highest of all batteries out there,
while achieving an impressive energy density
of 773 watt-hours per liter in the battery.
So the Honor Magic V3 features a large 5,150 milliamp-hour
third-generation Honor silicon carbon battery,
which delivers high performance while simultaneously
achieving a significant reduction in battery size.
With a mere thickness of 2.6 millimeters,
the battery provides reliable and long-lasting power
even in low-temperature conditions.
To put that into perspective,
you can get up to 16 hours of continuous video streaming on a single charge
and enjoy your favorite content
without having to worry about running out of power.
Moving on to the titanium vapor chamber,
the Honor titanium vapor chamber has always explored
better heat dissipation in an extremely thin and light body,
and its thickness is comparable to that of a cicadius wing in nature.
What does that mean?
Well, the Honor titanium vapor chamber is structured like a wing vane,
which makes full use of every inch of space
under the constraints of the extremely thin thickness of the entire machine.
Now, the industry usually uses copper alloy as the VC substrate,
but the Honor Magic V3 adopts a new generation
of Honor titanium vapor chamber technology.
For the first time, using titanium as the VC substrate,
the thickness is still the industry's thinnest.
The heat dissipation area is increased by 22%,
and at the same time, we have a weight reduction of 40%.
But compared to the previous generation,
we still have a 53% increase in cooling performance.
Now let's talk about the camera.
The Honor Magic V3 has a 50 megapixel main camera
with a 1 over 1.56 inch sensor and an F 1.6 aperture lens.
This is the largest aperture lens on foldables available on the market,
and this combination allows users to capture images
with greater sharpness, better exposure, and even richer dynamic range.
To ensure stability during photography,
the Honor Magic V3 sets a new benchmark
by integrating the 8-wide SMA actuator.
Combining autofocus and optical image stabilization functionalities,
this component allows Honor to shrink the size of the main camera by 38%
for an overall slimmer smartphone profile,
while increasing autofocus speeds by 45%
to help users land clean shots of objects in motion.
Whether capturing stationary objects or action-packed sequences,
the Honor Magic V3 delivers professional-looking and sharp results.
And that is the Honor Magic V3 preview.
Now I know we went very technical,
but when we see the final result of a device that's this thin and light,
we don't always appreciate the R&D and all of the new technologies
that have gone in to be able to achieve this.
Honor have been making some of my favorite foldables over the last few years,
and I think with the Honor Magic V3,
they're definitely in the lead when it comes to thin and light hardware
for a foldable smartphone.
Now Honor will be holding a global flagship launch event on the 5th of September,
so make sure you tune in to that to find out everything else about the Honor Magic V3,
including the price.
I'll leave a link down in the description below.
