Plesiosaur-Like Sea Monster Uncovered In Argentina | Boogeymen | Absolute Sci-Fi

For just over a century, strange sightings in Patagonia, Argentina, have captivated the imaginations of locals, scientists, zoologists and amateur explorers alike, all seeking to discover if the creature with the face of a serpent and the neck of a swan is more than just local legend. Join us as we pick up the trail and interview locals who claim to have seen the monster known as Nahuelito.
'Boogeymen' takes an in-depth look at the history of local monsters and travels to the small, picturesque towns where they appeared to listen to both believers and skeptics as they investigate the most recent sightings.
Doorway into Argentina's Patagonia region, the city of San Carlos de Bariloche lies at
the foot of the Andes, bordering Chile, some 1,640 kilometers or 1,020 miles southwest
of Buenos Aires.
Founded in 1890 by Swiss settlers as a holiday resort, Bariloche now prospers as a tourist
town of roughly 130,000 inhabitants.
Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, the city stretches out along Lake Nahuelhuapi
in the heart of the national park of the same name.
But this scenic paradise hides a dark mystery.
Nahuelhuapi Lake, fed by water from the Andean glaciers, houses a strange creature.
It doesn't have scales, it's like elephant skin.
It's gray on top, dark, and as it gets to the belly, it's lighter.
And it has fins.
And it has a very thin tail, which acts as a rudder.
It has a very high neck, and a small head.
And I estimate it to be about 12 meters long.
Huge.
When I saw it, with the binoculars, I looked for the encyclopedia,
quickly, to see the drawings that I have of the encyclopedia.
Then I said, ah, you are a pretosaur.
Everyone said, the monster of the lake.
Why monster?
So I say, it's a grandfather, a prehistoric animal.
And since then, it's called Nahuelito.
Nahuel, the lake.
Carolina Zirn has lived in Bariloche since the 1950s.
Originally from Buenos Aires, Carolina settled in this eccentric area
before it was fully developed, attracted by her love of nature
and the breathtaking scenery.
Today, as every day for the last 65 years,
this nonagenarian spends her leisure time contemplating
the mystery of Lake Nahuelhuapi.
Over the years, she says she has witnessed three apparitions.
Blas Chic comes from one of Bariloche's founding families.
The owner of a shipping company, he has a monopoly on the transit of vehicles,
fuels and heavy loads to the four communities of Lake Nahuelhuapi.
He's been sailing the lake for over 30 years
and also claims to have seen Nahuelito.
The magnitude was very surprising.
He kept an eye on us for an estimated 20 minutes, half an hour.
It was a coincidence that I had not been with him
because I accompanied him quite often to the trips he made.
I was almost 9, 10 years old
and when he came home to comment on what had happened,
I said, how could I miss it?
I also had the feeling of fear the following times
that I accompanied him on the boat.
Well, always being aware of the colors,
of the movements that arose as you went along the lake.
Lake Nahuelhuapi is of glacial origin.
Its name, given to it by the Native American Mapuche peoples,
means Lake of the Tiger.
It was said that on the island that we see here in the background
there were pumas
and that's why they called it the Island of the Tigers or the Island of the Lions.
When we talk about Nahuelito,
we are still talking about something unknown.
Many believed that there was a plesiosaur in this place
and it is very difficult.
The neighbors talk about Nahuelito with a lot of affection.
I have not had the opportunity to see Nahuelito
as some people claim to have seen it.
I have seen things that I cannot know
if they are really physical facts
that occur due to some chemical reaction on the surface.
Surely it has not been an animal, much less.
This is a lake that has its mysteries.
I am lucky to live on the coast of Lake Nahuelhuapi.
I see, especially at night,
interesting things,
luminescence in the lake.
You see strange things, let's say.
Patagonia, over the years,
has become a place
full of magic and mystery.
The first known stories
speak of a place full of mystery,
full of death.
In the maps of antiquity,
it was depicted as the country of the devil.
San Carlos de Bariloche was,
in its early days,
a settlement of nomadic peoples,
thousands of years ago.
Over time, it became a small village
that was an agricultural and livestock colony.
Over time, tourism marked the economic direction of the city
and it became what it is today.
In short, it is a place like a mountain village
where I am proud to live.
It is this wild and mysterious side to Patagonia
that pushed Carolina Zern to change her life in the 1950s.
When I arrived here 50 years ago,
Bariloche did not exist.
It was a village.
Everything was unexploded.
There was no electricity,
no telephone, no cable, nothing.
After the first mention of a strange apparition
in Lake Nahualhuapi over 100 years ago,
Nahualito has been rather quiet.
The first time was in 1910.
The second time was in 1936.
The third time was in 1957.
The fourth time was in 1986.
And the last time was in 2006.
At this time,
talking about a beautiful village
that went extinct 65 million years ago
is a bit difficult.
They will take it as a very crazy thing.
And I was not the only one who saw it,
because I saw two more people who saw it.
But I didn't want to say anything
because here, when you see something extraordinary,
people say, I take too much.
Let's say that the preciousness of Nahualito
gave this place a resonance.
In other words, Bariloche grew up with Nahualito.
Before, it was lived in another way.
It was lived from lake fishing, from crops.
Now, Bariloche lives from tourism.
Once Nahualito settled in people's minds,
many people from Buenos Aires, many tourists,
many people from other parts of the world
wanted to come and see that monster.
The first peoples conceived of the Tiger of the Lake
as mysterious and indestructible.
The Mapuche talk of a mythical being
that haunted all of Patagonia.
They called him El Cuero.
The ancient Mapuche people,
who inhabited this area and still do,
had a very particular legend,
which was the legend of the leather.
They saw a leather floating in the lake
that was taken to the animals.
Through that, it became popular.
The relationship between the monster began in 1910,
when for the first time a man called George Garrett,
who was the first to actually see the monster,
he said he had seen a leather floating in the lake
that was seven meters long.
This news spread quickly.
People started talking about the animals
that could be found in the United States.
They said, yes, we always said
that in Patagonia there could be antediluvian animals.
And, of course, it had to appear who said,
I saw him, Martin Sheffield,
a typical North American gold digger and plunderer,
a character of those, right?
Martin Sheffield was an American from Texas,
supposedly married to a Native American woman.
Described at the time as a cunning jester,
the alleged monster hunter sent a letter
to the director of the Buenos Aires Zoo
asking him to finance an expedition to capture the animal.
Although the expedition returned empty-handed,
a local Bariloche newspaper printed a photo
of a captured Nahuelito,
forgetting to specify that the photo was taken at a carnival.
It's a carnival.
It's a carnival mask.
It's the biggest joke ever made in this region
in more than a century.
And it was for those carnivals that the carriage
in the shape of a plesiosaur appeared for the first time
in the center of the city, crossing Mitre Street.
And from there, the legend or myth of Nahuelito
came to life and was present
in the traditional or cultural collection of the city of Bariloche.
In the first carnivals of Bariloche,
one of the elements that dominated the stage
in the most ancient street of Bariloche,
the only one at that time,
was the figure of the plesiosaur,
of Clemente Onelli or Martin Sheffield.
That huge figure appeared,
walking down the streets,
and that's how this myth, truth or reality,
which is our famous and already beloved Nahuelito,
Because you start to love a character you don't know.
But it became a rich story for this region
and an element of tourist promotion
that no one had suspected.
The arrival of the railroad,
the legend of the monster of Lake Nahuel Guapí,
and everything else,
made a contingent of tourists come to the area.
I even tell you more, to get to know the area,
because arriving in Bariloche at that time was not very easy.
At that time, the pencils to write
were made of wood with a little plate in front.
Some were made that had the head of the plesiosaur
and all the boys in the schools
wanted to have a plesiosaur pencil.
There were cigars marked plesiosaur
and even a tango, which I show you here.
The plesiosaur.
The hoax about the capture of Nahuelito
has not prevented newspapers from reviving
the mystery of the lake monster.
And news comes out.
More tourists saw the phenomenon of Nahuel Guapí.
New testimonies about the strange vision.
Of this, there are notes and notes.
Nahuelito 2.
A neighbor, a dear neighbor,
put the name Nahuelito.
Nahuelito made his first appearance
in the summer of 1994.
Notes and notes.
Another strange sighting in Lake Nahuel Guapí.
There was a boom of apparitions
between the 70s and the 80s.
For me, all this type of animal exists
and I don't base it on scientific evidence.
Because if I have to base it on scientific evidence,
I have to say no, that it doesn't exist.
For his part, Miguel Ángel Rossi
is currently filming a documentary
in order to debunk once and for all
the phenomenon of Nahuelito.
This lake has a depth
that was registered many years ago
of 500 meters.
But the most recent studies
indicate that there may be places
of more than 800 or almost 1000 meters.
The sightings of Nahuelitos
have historically had three places
where they have been seen more.
There is a place called
the area of 500 meters.
There is a place called
the arm of sadness.
That is one of the places
where Nahuelito has been seen the most.
Nahuelito is a phenomenon
for the inhabitants of this region
and even more so for the visitors.
I had no experience
about a sighting
or something that looks like
a strange movement in Lake Nahuelguapi
despite being born in Bariloche.
Yes, I had for my profession
and because I made many notes
the story of neighbors who claim
to have seen what we define today as Nahuelito.
I talked to relatives
of an important businessman
who died in 1987.
There were four of them.
Three businessmen and a bank manager.
Families known here in Bariloche.
It was a day like today.
There was no wave in Lake Nahuelguapi.
They were going in a very safe boat
and the news was that they disappeared.
The boat turned around
and went down.
Three bodies of four people appeared.
The other one is still missing.
It was a real mystery
because they were fishing,
because they were older people,
because there was no wind.
All this feeds the possibility
that something exists in Lake Nahuelguapi.
That there is something
that we still do not know.
I think Nahuelito is a myth.
For some it is a reality.
If it is there, it is ours.
If it is not there,
we congratulate those who reported
a legend, a story, a fiction
that has already reached international levels.
The television sometimes shows
a story of a neighbor.
The radio does its own thing.
And what they have taken strongly
are cartoonists or cartoonists.
This Nahuelito is already imagined
as a central figure and as a pet of this city.
Every five years
we are talking about him.
In five years,
stories may appear
that say they have seen Nahuelito.
Then it returns as a deep silence
where nobody speaks
until the figure of this little animal
resurfaces again through another popular story.
I have not seen Nahuelito personally.
I have seen two or three films
that made me think a lot
about his existence.
I would love to see him if he exists.
I pay attention to those people
who say they have seen him
because generally the eyes do not lie.
In addition to the tradition
and the history of his presence,
you have to give credit to those
who say that Nahuelito exists.
Nahuelito's sightings have always been made
on days when the lake is very calm,
as if it were ironed,
as if it were oil.
On those days
you can see internal movements,
you can see water movements
and you can see them emerge
like lomos.
Many have been seen from the coast,
photos have been taken,
but they do not stand out too much.
That's why the lake has to be very calm.
I think that since there were no waves,
because the waves renew the oxygen in the water.
On the other hand, the lake was still,
still, still, like ironed.
And surely they came to the surface
to oxygenate,
to feel oxygen.
They did not appear cold or something like that.
It was really a very suffocating time.
And they came out protected by the island.
Of all the sightings,
there are some points in common,
especially when people say
that it emerges as if it were the back of a whale
with a very loud noise.
In several places that is common,
even with the difference
in the story of many years.
And there are some very strong stories
also where they assure
that that spine that emerged from the lake
has had an influence on some accidents
that have occurred in the lake
with boats and fishermen,
with families who were sailing.
Most of the videos seem to show something,
but it is nothing.
I have seen many things that are trunks.
I have even seen filming
of some animals called huillines,
which are like large nutria.
I have seen waves,
what is sometimes called the famous single wave,
when the lake is very ironed.
There are internal currents
that raise a wave and then it ends.
There are some videos
that have really surprised me
and I can't say what it is,
but it is neither a trunk floating,
nor huillines swimming, nor the single wave.
Patagonia has always been very hard
from the beginning to the end.
And much harder is at the end of the world,
where they call it the end of the world,
in Ushuaia, the land of fire.
The Patagonian legends,
for example, you have the city of the Caesars,
you have the legend of the leather,
you have an infinity of things
that make Patagonia a place,
if you want to say, a little enchanted.
There are different cultures,
of which if one learns,
you have a total wealth.
Especially the culture of the people of the land,
who were the first, the originaries,
who first populated Patagonia.
In fact, there are records from 17,000 years ago.
These monsters that you see here
come many times from tradition to tradition,
they happen orally, let's say.
Patagonia is wonderful.
Darwin had already said it
when he traveled here in 1833.
It is a giant museum,
it is a place where fossils abound everywhere.
A plesiosaur is an animal with a long neck,
it has four fins, two front and two rear,
and a tail.
They were purely aquatic animals.
To see a plesiosaur today in a lake
is like seeing a million-year-old man
walking down the street.
Technically, it is impossible.
65 million years ago, the plesiosaurs disappeared
and it is impossible for them to exist today.
That does not mean that nature
has not reserved some surprises for us.
It may be that some animals have still survived,
such as the coelacanth, for example,
which is a fish that was found in India
more or less 60 years ago,
which was believed to have been extinct 65 million years ago.
And that fish was forming hybrids, hybrids, hybrids,
until today.
I suppose that if that fish had been extinguished 65 million years ago
and did not do it, why could it not have survived
and made hybrids, a plesiosaur?
There is a work carried out by scientists
from the University of the South, here in Argentina,
where they discovered that the famous
lomos that are seen sailing on the water
are gas bubbles
that come out of a fault
that is in Lake Nahuel Huapi,
which form as if it were
the back of a plesiosaur that is sailing.
Those gas bubbles are produced because
we are in a petroleum basin.
We have a very technological culture,
technology everywhere, which is not bad,
of course it is very good,
but we forget a lot
about what the Earth is,
what the Earth gives us, what the Earth teaches us.
So we cannot accept, how can I tell you,
the belief that a monster can exist in a lake.
How can something similar exist?
Some say that Lake Nahuel Huapi
has connections with the Pacific Ocean.
That is why they say that the Nahuelito
from the Pacific Ocean would enter here,
but that is also impossible.
The Chileans say that this animal is seen in the Pacific.
Now, how does it get here?
I think that the mountain range is not a mole,
but there are undergrounds.
Otherwise, how can the lake
always be at the same height?
Because with the rain it does not grow.
If the Pacific Ocean was here
and the Nahuel Huapi here,
the Nahuel Huapi would have salty water.
And if it were the other way around,
that the Nahuel Huapi is higher than the Pacific,
the water of the Nahuel Huapi
would end up in the Pacific and not in the Atlantic.
And if they were both at the same level,
it would have to have a very large cave.
The feeling that I have of living here
is of freedom, of pure air,
especially in silence.
And early in the morning I hear the birds.
And I have a carancho,
which is a rather large gray bird
that stands on top of the pole
and we have a conversation.
I have a very strong connection
with nature in general,
whether it is trees, plants and animals.
The indigenous cultures are very different
from our cultures.
They respect the land,
their traditions, their monsters,
their mythological beings.
They respect them because it is part of their life.
The land is part of them.
They call it a monster.
What right do we have
because we find animals that are not the same
as a horse, a bee or a dog?
Why do we have to call them monsters?
When it appeared on the island,
it was a big one,
which I thought was the female,
and two smaller ones
were playing there.
That's why they were running around,
as they say,
the mother is with the boys on the beach.
That's why I could see their whole body.
They are not terrestrial,
they have four fins.
I loved seeing them,
they were free.
And in that, the one I thought was the female
stopped suddenly and looked to the side
and there were boats coming from the nautical club.
I started screaming,
go away, go away!
I was like crazy.
I don't know if they heard me or not,
but they disappeared under the water.
We are predators,
we are not going to study
a creature like you,
we are going to investigate what this is,
why is it here,
we are going to destroy it.
Our ancestors didn't do that.
The evidence is circumstantial,
a sighting or a photograph
that can be taken occasionally.
But scientific evidence, no.
Because for scientists,
it is very difficult to believe
that an animal of those characteristics
or a beast of those characteristics
could have survived too many climatic changes.
All legend comes from a reality.
First there is reality,
then it becomes a legend
and then it becomes a myth.
One of the versions that affirms
that the Nahuelito does not exist,
I take it from the experiences
of an old captain of a ship,
now deceased,
whose name was Don Fernando Galeani.
Since the 1930s,
when he started sailing next to Nahuel Guapi,
he maintained that the presence of the Nahuelito
was nothing more and nothing less
than what he called the dead wave.
That theory that I had as valid
made me think
about the possibility
that the animal really existed.
Because one day,
a friend of mine was coming down
from Cerro Campanario
and saw a strange movement in the lake,
more or less between the movement
and the chair, about two kilometers.
He pointed with his camera
and brought it with the zoom
and it was a body that was moving
that ascended towards the surface
forming a circle, a curve,
very close to the coast of the Campanario arm
almost on the surface
because the color of the body
was more or less grayish,
light gray in my memory
and it always returned in a curve
to sink into the water and disappear.
These images made us think
that possibly a living animal
was in the depths of the Nahuel Guapi.
Because a trunk does not rise in a curve
to the surface and sink again
in a planned trajectory,
but it really had life
and it must have been quite large.
We were more skeptical
in thinking about the life
and the presence of the Nahuel.
The truth is that at that moment
we doubted that at least
there was something under the lake,
but we did not know very well what.
I think there is
that is similar to a mantarraya.
I think there is a couple
or an individual
who is and can live quietly,
that is to say,
get out of the lake quietly.
I was surprised to see something
floating in the lake.
It was as if it were a black balloon
that came at full speed
from the peninsula of San Pedro,
from the bottom of the mountain range.
I went to look in the long view
to focus it better
and when I focus in the long view
I see that that black thing
that was floating was not a balloon
nor a submarine as I thought,
because it had taken a very long neck
with the head up.
I thought it was the periscope.
And when I saw the whole body
I quickly looked for a sheet to draw it
and I called the radio to say
that if you please look
because I did not want to be the only one
who had seen such an animal.
I have a camera but I did not have a roll, right?
And this plethosaurus did not notify me
by phone when it came.
Maybe it came many more times
that I could not see it.
The date it came,
the two or three times I saw it,
the lake was flat,
the time was very overwhelming.
For me it feeds on algae.
It does not have the mouth to eat a person.
If it had ever happened to eat a human being
it would have died poisoned
because we are so bad,
we distill so much evil
that it would have become poisoned.
Let's take into account an interesting detail.
These lakes are not very old lakes.
Their age is around 1.5 million years,
approximately.
So between the space of 65 million years
to 1.5 million years ago,
where did the plethosaurus live?
If the lake did not exist,
the plethosaurus could not exist.
These animals were of technically warm waters
because the Jurassic and Cretaceous system
had seas with slightly warmer waters.
But it may be that because it is observed
more in summer than in winter.
In winter here it is very cold
and there is not much to stand next to the lake
to see what is happening.
There is a lot of wind, the water is more in motion,
unlike in summer when the water is more still
and maybe some things are seen.
But that is not an indication
to say that in summer they are seen more than in winter.
I could tell you that in summer
the gas bubbles are more soluble
and they rise much more easily than in winter.
Apparently there would be rare animals
in different parts of the world.
In reality, no one saw them.
We did not see God and we believe in God,
did we?
I have a theory.
For me there are giant turtles in this lake.
Scientists say there are not.
I have had turtles with my son
in my hand, large turtles,
aquatic turtles in this lake.
So I think there may have been
a deformation of some kind of turtle.
This is an area of turtles
from a long time ago.
Hopefully the research through this audiovisual work
gives me the reason.
Some say there is a giant turtle,
but the turtle is an animal,
it is a reptile,
and in cold waters I do not think it could walk for a long time
because in the middle of winter it would freeze.
Reptiles need heat to live, not cold water.
In this era, in this time that we are living,
everything is hidden.
UFO research is top secret.
Cryptozoological research is the same.
So people do not have the means
to be able to search.
We know more about space than we have here.
There are areas in the Congo, in the Belgian Congo,
in Africa, that are still unexplored.
In Brazilian jungles,
indigenous tribes are still being discovered.
We are living in a world
where they are putting other kinds of things in our heads.
If someone took the risk
to investigate well what exists in this lake,
I think it would be a surprise.
I'm not saying you're going to find a precious audio,
but you can find some sarcastic
that can demystify the myth of the grandfather.
I have not seen a grandfather.
My belief is in reading,
my belief is in research,
in contact with people,
in seeing, in going out and reading,
in looking for information.
I have always been interested in this kind of mysteries and enigmas.
It's not from now on.
I've been researching this kind of stuff for 42 years.
UFO, parapsychology, occultism, cryptozoology.
I like everything that has a word for mystery.
So I go and research.
I try to find the yes and the no,
the why and the why not.
I'm not a fanatic.
I'm a person who has a criterion.
I don't say yes to everything.
Everything is a spectacular possibility that it can be.
Now that I assure you that it can be, I don't know.
But all arguments to discredit the testimony
in favor of the existence of Nahuelito
have little value in the eyes of Roberto Polola.
After many years conducting his own investigation,
his findings invalidate all these dissenting theories.
This, this, and this.
And what about the real?
Well, the real is what the witness sees.
The real is what they tell you.
The real is the photograph.
You can also cheat the photograph because that is very common today.
But there are photographs and photographs.
Now there are techniques that tell you,
well, this photograph is cheated and this is not.
And many of the photographs they have taken are not cheated
because they have done all the analysis.
So they have been veridical results.
And with these theories of what bubbles are,
I take them as a reference,
but I don't take it as a very real thing.
We have a little bug that is so tiny,
which is the cockroach, 400 million years ago,
and those animals were mutating.
They were mutating and mutating until today.
Why couldn't they have mutated a precious object
to get to this height, to this life, to this time?
They could have done it well.
I can't assure you that they have done it,
but if we base ourselves on those strong evidence,
you can't say no because yes.
The tourists who come to San Carlos de Bariloche
basically come looking to enjoy nature.
This region has multiple possibilities
to take advantage of nature,
whether in summer with the mountains,
with its lakes.
A poet once called it the region of the four skies
because the four seasons of the year are well differentiated.
Now, in spring,
the possibility of enjoying the first days of sun,
with 20, 22, 24 degrees of temperature,
enables outdoor activities,
whether in the mountains,
in the lakes or in the rivers,
or in the steppe, which is that area where the forest is not.
I always say that this film will change
the history of the city a little.
The scientific part can base all its sayings
and the part of the neighbors and the people
who have had sightings can also base
and we can know in depth
and relive from the recreations
those sightings and find
perhaps an answer
that so far has not given any work.
At the beginning of the 21st century,
the presence of Nahuelito in all excursions
was practically daily.
It was seen, especially in the days of spring and summer,
the days when the lake is calm, it is flat.
There people say that it is when you can see it better.
Tourism entrepreneurs, in general, institutions,
different leaders,
do not talk about Nahuelito.
If the society, the common neighbor, talks,
then that thing is very interesting to rescue.
The last reference I had was in 2006.
But supposedly from 2006 to 2013
have passed a few years and sightings will have seen many.
I do not say no.
So far 1,500 different species have appeared
of totally unknown animals.
And even today there are animals that do not know how to classify them.
You see that each animal has its scientific name.
Scientists put them to determine what kind of animals.
Well, today there is a huge amount of these new species
that still in large centers cannot be classified.
We are inhabiting an almost unknown planet.
The message that all this has for me,
that millenary story, is
let's take care of nature.
Be careful with the lake, which is very beautiful, but you can drown.
Try to caress and respect a lot
the lake, the streams.
A little further south are the continental ice.
That's the interpretation I make.
These animals, such as Onesi, Ogopogo, Mukelembembe,
Mapinguari, Yeti, Sasquatch, Bigfoot,
are animals that come from a tradition.
Because if we talk about Bigfoot or Sasquatch, for example,
Bigfoot, the Indians of North America,
the Cheyennes, the Navajos,
all those, the Anasazi, already spoke of all these types of beings
who lived in that place.
So it comes from a tradition.
And it can't be, for me it can't be,
that all the cultures of these people
