In a small university, a very wise old professor called his students together
for a lesson they would remember all their lives. Standing before them with a glass of water and a
warm smile, he posed an unexpected question. How much do you think this glass of water weighs?
The students eagerly shouted out guesses. Eight ounces, one proposed. Maybe sixteen ounces,
another ventured. Each student tried to determine the weight, assuming it was part of the lesson.
Then the professor called a student over and asked him to hold the glass of water.
The student held the glass for a while, but after some time, he began to feel pain in his wrist.
As the pain worsened, he set the glass down on the table and immediately felt relief.
The professor was silent for a moment, then he smiled.
The weight itself doesn't matter, he said. What matters is how long I hold it.
Hold it for a minute, and it feels light. Hold it for an hour, and your arm begins to ache.
Hold it for an entire day. Your arm would go numb, and eventually you would have to put it down.
He paused, letting his words settle over the room.
The glass doesn't get heavier, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels.
The students fell silent, captivated by his words. The professor continued. This glass is like the
worries and cares we carry. If you think about a problem briefly, it doesn't weigh much on you.
But if you dwell on it for hours, it starts to hurt. And if you carry it with you every day,
it can become so burdensome that it drains you, making it difficult to focus on anything else.
At a certain point, you simply have to put it down.
The students nodded as the lesson sank in. They understood that holding onto stress and worry
doesn't help. Sometimes moving forward in life means learning to let go.
A truth the professor had gently conveyed through his simple yet powerful demonstration.
The moral of the story is that carrying worries and stress makes life a burden.
Carrying a glass of water is very manageable at first, but the longer you carry it,
the heavier it feels, just like some problems in life. As we keep our focus on these worries,
they gradually affect our well-being, draining our energy and making it hard to enjoy life
and concentrate on what truly matters. And we can also hurt ourselves by holding onto negative,
whether it is stress, resentment, or self-doubt. Negative thoughts absorb our energy,
impair judgment, and influence relationships negatively.
Over time, a cycle is created, becoming very difficult to break once begun,
pulling us down and making it increasingly challenging to see the good. Sometimes we
have problems demanding our attention, but all moments don't necessarily have to be spent dwelling
on them. Taking a break off our concerns or putting them down gives a fresh perspective
and strength when we are ready to take them on. This brings in peace and focus to a life without
constantly carrying such burdens. Basically, the more days we carry with us worries and negativity,
the weightier it becomes. Movement forward requires that what cannot be controlled
be let go to enable space for growth, joy, and balance in life.
This allows one to free his hands to do the most important things in life. That is,
when freed from the burden, a lot of things could now happen, our strength gets reinforced,
and we get to be peaceful. By embracing this way of thinking, we let positivity and hope
drive us through a more open-hearted and lighter approach to life.
