One of our favorite hikes at Grindelwald First in the Jungfrau Region Switzerland. We extended the hike by continuing on the Via Alpina trail down to Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge.
Our family has lived in Zurich since 2005, hiking, biking, swimming and skiing all over Switzerland with our kids. We post the details of each family-friendly activity with tips, logistics, maps, and lots of photos to help your family have successful outings.
We're passionate about helping families spending more time together, especially outdoors. We love our adopted country and want to help you explore all the beautiful corners, not just the famous stuff.
I'm Tanya and today I am on the Marmot Trail that is at Grindelwald Fierst. I'm hiking from
Grindelwald Fierst over to Grosses Scheidegg, which is the mountain pass over here, and then
I'm going to go over the other side of the mountain down to the Rosenlei Schlucht
or gorge and then take a bus home. We're gonna see what happens. Let's get on the trail. I will
put a link in the description below to my website where I have all the details for this trail and
Here's the trail, not to scale. Right now we're going up. It's been easy so far but now I'm
breathing heavy coming up this, but I think it's pretty short. So there's this little booklet that
you can get at the gondola station and it has little games and stories and you answer questions
along the trail and then you record them in the book. Okay we're at station D and now we're
answering what are the names of his two best friends Tom and Jenny, where's Tanya, my name,
and Jana and Sushi. I can hear so many marmots. That's all I can hear. I'm looking hard for them.
I'm not really good at spotting them. My son's the best at it. He's not here right now. I'm going to
quietly try and find one, but you're never going to see on the video. So if you want to see them
you're going to have to just sit quiet and look for movement among the rocks. They're definitely
here. Okay here's a mess of snow. We reached down earlier the trail, but this trail is open
and safe according to the website. Let's get around it today. We will not be taking the
blue light up to the Schwarzhorn. We're gonna go this way. There were so many people
at Grindelfar first, on the train, on the gondola, at the viewpoints. It was getting a little much,
but literally you get one second off on the trail and it's quiet and beautiful. I'm just like
the Switzerland I know and love. So go hiking. Look at all these beautiful flowers. I love this
trail so much. It might be my new go-to instead of the bath all day which has gotten so so busy.
I mean I love the lake at the back of the state. I love it love it love it, but the trail
well the trail is not as interesting because it's that flat surface road and
it's getting a little busy. I'm asked to like, but this was also very nice.
Okay we're looking at the Chamois or Gemse which you can see around here.
Look at this cool snow bridge. I'll be honest, I thought this trail was going to be stupid.
I saw pictures of it online and they look stupid. So I mean it goes to show you that you don't know.
I mean that's why I do the blog and I do all the videos because I don't know why they pick the
photos that they post of these places, but they're not indicative of what's really happening out here.
I mean this is out of control gorgeous. I mean what more do you want out of the hike?
It's ridiculous. How have I not done this hike before? No one's on it. It's so beautiful.
I'm almost to Grosses Scheidegg pass and then instead of taking the bus back to Grunewald,
I'm gonna hike over the other side of the mountain to the Rosenlaue valley.
Good thing I didn't need to catch that bus. It only comes once an hour.
I got to the halfway point of Grosses Scheidegg but it's 2 30 and I want to stop and eat but I
think that I need to keep hiking so I can get the last bus which is at 5 18 and I also want to see
the gorge so I think I'm gonna have to hustle right now. Along this part we are on the road
sometimes and I was worried about that so we'll see how I feel. Right now it's okay because there's
only a private road and not much traffic. I'm a little worried because I just saw a sign that
said to Schwarzwald 40 minutes to Rosenlaue. I'm actually not quite sure how to say it.
1 hour 15. I'm gonna get there 4 30. Are we gonna have enough time to see the gorge?
Time will tell. So I'm really just gonna have to stop taking pictures, stop taking videos
so I can't hustle down but then what's the point? I might have to leave Rosenlaue for another
day, come back and just do the gorge. I don't know. Let's see what we can see. Oh it's pretty.
Now I'm at the Rosenlaue Glacier Schlucht, Glacier Gorge and I got here just in time to
visit it before I catch the next bus, the last bus. It looks amazing and no one's here.
All right we're all done. I did everything I wanted to do today and I'm so happy that everything
worked out. All the timing was just so knapp and I was able to fit everything in. Now I'm just
waiting for the bus. It's the last bus of the day. It comes in six minutes and if it comes then
everything will have worked out I think. But I still have to go uh let's see hour and a half
bus plus train to Interlaken pick up my luggage which I have stored there and then two hours
home to Zurich. It's still a long way home. I wish I was staying overnight here but I've
already been here three days. All right I will put a link in the description below to our website
where I'll have all the information for the hikes that I did today and also for the Rosenlaue Gorge
here which is absolutely worth a visit and I'll see you next time for more hiking in Switzerland.
