We're back now on gma. Yeah, we're kicking off our zooming
with zoo series will feature animals all summer long look
this is me this is in Africa outside in Kenya.
Yeah, at the giraffe center feeding drafts, I love to
wrap that you're at was like don't be shady with this next.
Yeah, so this morning first we're going to go to the
Houston zoo to celebrate World Giraffe Day check this out.
It's a towering celebration of the longest swaying necked
animal.
World Giraffe Day.
The day marking the longest of the year honoring the tallest
mammal on the planet
initiated by the draft conservation Foundation 10
years ago, bringing awareness to the challenges, the
marvelous creature faces in the wild over the past 35 years
draft numbers have decreased by nearly 30% in regions once
considered prime habitats their numbers have dropped by up to
95%.
And that Houston zoo, they're part of the celebration and
initiative to help save drafts in Africa prioritizing fun and
education for all serving up a tall order for fun.
Okay, so we're so into the draft right there may think
and Heather Johnson so graceful and beautiful. Heather J Heather
Johnson so graceful and beautiful from the Houston zoo
joins us now with some friends there in the background there
Heather we're hoping that they come over you guys are
celebrating a draft day why is this so important for the
species.
Yeah, so as you just kind of mentioned you're out there now
an endangered animal which a lot of people don't realize
that this is so common when you come to a zoo. The celebrating
World Draft Day really helped us get the education and
awareness out there that these really gentle giant are facing
some pretty big threat out there in the wild.
So we're actually seeing one walking towards the camera just
maybe as we look at these drafts here behind you tell us
about them and your newest addition Tino.
Yeah, so fingers crossed they come up they are on baby watch
right now as you mentioned we have a brand new tiny addition
his name is you know, he's almost 7 weeks old now he's a
very cute very fun addition to our herd and you can see all
the adults behind me taking their turn walking over him
making sure he's safe out there in the yard.
I was so sweet they're almost like dinosaurs is just amazing
hey it's going to be in the 90's in Houston so tell us how
do drafts keep cool in this extreme heat.
Yeah, the draft have almost a built-in air conditioning
system underneath each one of those unique into the
individual box that draft have the collection of blood vessels
and what that does is help keep the draft really nice and cool
even when it was in temperatures here in the
Houston area that is good to know and how can people get
involved and help out at home.
Yeah, so if you're here in the Houston area a really easy way
that you can help out draft it simply by coming to the Houston
do a portion of every single ticket that we felt goes right
back to our conservation partners are actively working
in Kenya every single day to help save wild that I draft if
you're anywhere else in the world. Don't come down and pay
us a visit that helped out as well. We also recommend
checking out our conservation partners website the Somali
draft project is a lot of educational information on
there about how you can help a draft while you're at home as
well good information and Kenya with them inside draft that's
exactly where I was with the with the draft video we showed
earlier, thank you so much Heather, we love your energy
how we do and the mystical.
