Hey guys, Nebol here.
So we've been wanting to try some southern food for like the longest time.
So we asked our friends on Reddit what would be some good places to visit here in Chicago.
And they recommended Pearl's Place in Bronzeville, Luella's Gospel Bird in Bucktown, Luella's
Southern Kitchen in Ravenswood, and MacArthur's in South Austin.
And that's where we're going.
MacArthur's in South Austin.
And it's a rainy, foggy day in Chicago as you can see, or not see in this case.
That's the view from the car.
Oooh, isn't it foggy?
It's cold as hell too.
From what we've learned, this popular cafeteria style eatery sometimes has a line of people
that snakes out the door.
Lots of famous people have dined here too.
Obama, Alicia Keys, even Kanye.
That's because you can expect a rotating menu of soul food classics.
Depending on the day of the week, you'll find barbecued chicken and ribs, fried catfish
and fried chicken.
Doesn't that look good?
What about these collard greens and yams?
Or good ol' red beans and rice?
What did you get?
Uh, I'm hoping to get catfish.
Mac and cheese.
And I guess a scallop potato?
So we're here at MacArthur's and we ordered our plates.
Check out our food.
I got the catfish.
Catfish, ribs?
That's a weird combination.
Yeah, yeah.
Catfish, mashed potatoes, spaghetti, the collard greens.
Alright, give it a taste.
It's okay, it'll work.
Good mashed potatoes?
Yeah, those are good.
Like really good mashed potatoes.
Have you ever had catfish?
I've had it once before and no.
It's good stuff.
Nice seasoning.
Nice bite texture.
Careful with the bones.
Very good?
Yeah.
That's good.
Alright, let's take a look at Maria's plate here.
Wait, wait, wait.
I need to try your spaghetti first.
Okay.
That's really good.
Yeah, that's good spaghetti, right?
Let's see.
Give us a little tour.
So I got rice and beans, I got ribs, collard greens too, and cornbread.
Cornbread, sweet.
These are good.
What are you doing?
Red beans and rice.
I should have went with barbecue ribs.
These are falling off the bone.
That's how it's supposed to be.
Yeah?
Nice.
Off the bone.
Alright guys, we're going to finish off these plates and we'll see you in a little while.
Welcome to another episode of Car Food Confessional.
MacArthur Edition.
Yep.
So we just finished having lunch and it was great.
It was great, it was a great value.
I think we paid $9.99 for a plate.
Yeah, about $10 a plate.
And pretty good value because they give you a lot of food.
Yeah, and we tried everything guys.
Everything that looked good, we got it.
Yeah.
We tried most of, like almost all of the stuff that they had there.
Yeah, we couldn't resist.
Yeah, because they had chicken and then there was the ribs and pork chops.
So we didn't get pork chops or chicken.
Yeah.
But we got everything else.
I wanted to try the fried chicken.
Yeah, I should have tried the fried chicken.
But we already had a lot of food.
Yeah, I wanted to try the catfish.
But we tried the catfish.
Yeah, it was good.
This is my first time trying catfish.
Oh, it was your first time?
Yeah.
I mean, it was good.
Maybe not my favorite fish, but it had the cornmeal.
Yeah, because it had the cornmeal bread.
And that made it really good.
Cornmeal, a lot of people might not be used to it, but it was good.
It gives it a nice crunch and stuff.
What was your favorite?
Mine actually, I really liked your ribs.
Oh, yeah.
They were tangy and sweet and fall off the bone.
It was fantastic.
Yeah, fall off the bone.
That's how tender they were.
So that made it really delicious.
I also liked my mashed potatoes and gravy.
Mashed potatoes were really good.
Yeah.
The collard greens.
Collard greens were fantastic.
It was one of my favorites, so I really liked that.
I love your spaghetti.
Ah, spaghetti was like old school.
It was like school cafeteria spaghetti, guys.
Yeah, like school cafeteria spaghetti.
It was really good, yeah.
It surprised me, actually.
Because I was actually waiting for mac and cheese, and then they were like, ah, it's
going to be another 10 minutes.
I was like, hmm.
Ah, I'll just go with the spaghetti.
We were really hungry, yeah.
Yeah, I was like, I'm just going to go with the spaghetti.
What else did we get?
Oh, the rice and beans was good.
Yeah, rice and red beans.
The beans, well, we're Puerto Rican.
So we need a little bit of sofrito in those beans.
But they were pretty good.
Yeah, they were good.
Just a little bit of salt, and you're good to go.
And the cornbread.
We got cornbread muffins.
I wasn't expecting cornbread muffins.
And I actually got two.
I don't know why I got two, but hey, bonus.
Maybe because you didn't get the mac and cheese, and she felt bad, so.
Maybe, maybe.
Or because that second cornbread muffin was kind of itty bitty, and it was skinny, so
she was like, I'll throw in another one.
He's a big guy, so he can eat more.
What?
Whatever.
Yeah.
Oh, they have great desserts, too.
We just didn't get it because we're trying to cut sugar.
We're also not supposed to eat gluten, but at least for a few weeks, we're trying that out.
But we really wanted to try the spaghetti and some other stuff.
Yeah, I actually wanted to try the banana pudding.
Yeah, the banana pudding looked really good.
They also have like carrot cake and a lot of good stuff.
Oh, the peach cobbler looked fantastic.
That's one of your favorites.
Yeah, we had to miss out on that.
But everything was really good.
Overall was really good.
It's a little bit, like it's like 40 minutes from the city, right?
Yeah, about.
We traffic, yeah, it's about 40 minutes.
But it's totally worth the trip if you guys want to go.
Oh, yeah.
Just one more thing I want to mention, like when you do go order, because it's kind of
like cafeteria style, they'll ask you if it's for there or to go.
Make sure that if you ask for it for there, to eat it there, that they have the plates
ready because you don't want what happened to us where we're like, yeah, it's for here.
And then we were going down the line just following everybody.
And then we saw everybody getting like picking their sides like we haven't got.
I think they got confused because everybody was getting their meals to go.
Yeah.
So definitely if you go, just order to go.
Just order to go because you're going to have so much food that you want to take some home.
So just order it to go.
Order to go.
Yeah.
They get confused.
Not all have to go back.
Yeah.
I had to go back and I had to pick the side.
Keep that in mind.
But yeah, give it a shot.
I think you'll like it.
Yeah.
You're definitely going to like it.
It's one of the best.
Thank you.
Reddit.
Our Reddit friends.
Yeah.
And I'll see you in the next one, guys.
Bye.
