Hi, we are Stephen, Jess, Hunter and baby Koa - an Australian family who have had quite the journey. After travelling the world as a couple in 2020 we had our very first baby, we then spent the following year self-converted a van before moving into it full-time to drive around Australia. Cut to 2023 we welcomed our second child Koa into the world before resuming full-time travel around the world. ------------------------------------------ 0:00 Intro
Hey everybody and welcome back to Africa. Now this is probably not the place you think of when you
think of Africa. You probably think of safaris, the big five and those beautiful red and oranges
sunsets. Well if you caught last week's vlog you would have seen that we have flown from Europe
out to the island of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania and it is a tropical paradise.
So stay tuned for a bit of change in pace here with some things we've never done before. To get
to this restaurant you actually need to go there by a boat during high tide. The boat was rocking.
As our full-time traveling family continues to experience the breathtaking cultures from around
the world. Good morning everybody. I've woken up just at six and the sun hasn't come yet. I'm
fully expecting an incredible sunrise. I've just walked out here. Look how flat the water is today.
I see the locals are burning fires. I don't know if this is to combat the mosquitoes. I don't feel
like there's a whole lot of mosquitoes out here. I'm four minutes early for sunrise so
I think I'm gonna stay put here until I see it.
As we are on a tropical island we thought let's kick things off by doing a snorkeling tour and
oh my goodness guys the water here is so beautiful. Is everyone okay?
Now we're here on an island eating a seafood cafe and swimming. It's gorgeous. Wow this is our first
taste of Zanzibar's beautiful clear water. We've come out to this little sand cave.
We're actually going to be going to a few spots today. We've got like a whole full day booked in
and we are already just so happy because we haven't done like a boat tour since the highlands
and that was the beginning of the year. I'll definitely say every tourist under
the sun is here from Zanzibar. You've just got to find your little spots.
Here you go.
How is it?
Ginger beer, ginger.
Your turn to hang out with dad. So we're going to the little lagoon huh?
Look at you so proud of yourself that you got your little floaties on.
Do you know what's special about this place? It's a special lagoon that mermaids live in.
They're saying the tide here in Zanzibar is so crazy. This is high tide right now so it's full
of water but here in the lagoon in low tide you can walk from here to that sandbank.
That's crazy the tide here changes like five meters I think they say.
Can you remember when we were at that Disney hotel in Hawaii?
Look at me breathing for you now. You're doing so good. Now remember when you were
nervous to go down the snow and it was so much fun? And remember when you were nervous to go
down the slides and it was so much fun? Do you reckon this is going to be so much fun?
I don't know. You don't know? Well should we go work it out? Should we go see?
Ready to come in the water with dad? Do you want to see the beautiful high tide?
One, two, three.
I saw a fish. I saw a fish. I just saw it go through my rubber boots.
Hello, I'm Elsa and I'm four and I know how to snorkel and I'm in Zanzibar.
So we've now come to our final spot of the snorkeling day. It's been absolutely
brilliant. We've come to this island and they're about to cook us up a seafood barbecue on the
beach and because I don't know I always get so hungry after a massive day of swimming
and snorkeling and the food just looks delicious. They have tuna steaks, they have calamari,
they have prawns and they even have lobster tails. Don't think you're gonna leave this place hungry.
I swear I keep coming to you guys from water but I feel like that is the theme here in Zanzibar
is that we just keep swimming. We've decided to maximize as much time as possible. We checked
out pretty much at 10. It was about an hour and a half drive from our last villa we stayed at
and we're of course a bit too early to check in but they said that's fine. Enjoy the pool. So we've
jumped straight into the pool and apparently we can order some lunch straight to the pool which
is going to keep everybody very happy. Five days ago Hunter did learn to swim and she's very
excited about it. How does it feel holding your breath for that long? So good. The sun is shining,
falling in love with Zanzibar, the people are so nice. They all say Hakuna Matata just like
in the Lion King. Hakuna Matata. What does Hakuna Matata mean?
It is a Lion King but you know it means something. She's gone. It means no worries.
It's not only Hunter who's been learning to swim. Go get it. Kick, kick, kick your legs.
You got it, you got it. Okay we've now upgraded. We've got like a little sink here. It's gonna
go to the bottom of the floor and she's gonna get it. All right, ready, set, back.
Gosh the kids are starving. We were swimming for like two hours.
Hunter's obsessed with the fruit here in Zanzibar but this place is all inclusive.
Thank you. Wow we got a pool down here.
Wow. Oh my goodness. It's so big. Hunter, we have our own dining room area. What do you think?
Look at this. What? How does this look, Hunter?
Super nice. What? Cool. Look at the pool. Do you want to go and swim?
Mango, mango, mango. I just love the mango.
Jess was just saying before, I don't think I can picture like a time when we have swam so much. I
think because Hunter is now fully swimming and the best purchase we got in Dubai was a couple of
armbands for Koaw and he, if you have a one-year-old, you know they just want independence and for him
just be able to bob, do his own bobbing when he wants, means like we've just been in the pool
more than I swam a bit on the land. But definitely feeling super thankful to be staying here. As you
guys can see this is probably one of the nicest places we've stayed in years. They were kind
enough to invite us out here and show you this amazing place. Hey bud. We're gonna enjoy the
pool and then we'll give you guys a room tour. Alrighty, this absolute maze of a place not only
comes with your own little private full pool, I wouldn't even call that a plunge pool, a full pool,
but around this hidden maze with these rocks you're gonna come across your own outdoor oasis,
I'm gonna call it. There is not only an outdoor shower but not only on top of that,
they have an outdoor bath and I just love how it's designed. It is a reveal to you.
Dropped my mouth when I saw this. How cool is this outdoor bath and they've even like left
shower, bath gel, conditioner, shampoo and then some bath salt spices. So oh wow that smells so
good. That smells like Christmas. Oh that is so good. So we're gonna run a bit of a bath
because we have just been in the pool since 12 and it is 4 now. This place has been catered so
well for kids. So it's like put into two sections. So one side is where the two bedrooms are and then
on this side it's almost like a little living room, dining room, kitchen. The kids are all
playing in their little Hakuna Matata tent. Look at this, we have a dining table with a jar of
cookies and a whole bowl full of fruit including mangoes. I haven't shown that to them yet and then
because we have all-inclusive, even the bar like the in-room drink fridge is included. They even
have, I'm not really a beer drinker but look at this, Kilimanjaro lager. And then I noticed this
before I showed Steve, we have our very own coffee machine. Like I want this in my house so he can
make flat whites or barista like coffees in here. Don't know how it works yet but we're gonna make
coffees. All this water, so nice but I think this is the best bit. This is so cool. I know I was
like oh my gosh for Koha's bedroom one day, making my little jungle thing with Hakuna Matata, so cute.
But if you guys know us, gotta go for a savannah cider. Hey everybody, this episode is brought to
you by Blue Yeti who are having an amazing boxing day slash Christmas sale going on at the moment.
We wish we had one of these when we were doing our van life trip around Australia but these are
actually great to use not only while you're camping in the outback but also at home. So we picked
up the Blue Yeti AC 200L and this beast can charge so many things. Right now on a little
camping trip I have my drone charging, three lithium batteries, I have a laptop plugged in,
I have a camera battery charger plugged in, I have my phone charging and there is still an extra USB-C,
another USB-C and it is going perfectly fine. I used the kettle this morning and it is still just
at 94% so this thing can keep you charged for longer. So the reason we decided to pick up a
Blue Yeti battery is because it is an eco-friendly energy storage source for both indoor and outdoor.
So if you're camping, heading to the outdoors this Christmas break or if you're wanting a backup
power solution during the holiday season. So Blue Yeti is having a Christmas promotion
during this time period where the AC 200L will be on sale but using our exclusive discount code
you're going to get an additional 5% off the already amazing price exclusive just for you
guys. Check out the link in the description below. Good morning everyone we've just woken up
and we are heading down to the beach where they serve breakfast. We haven't had a little
peek at the beach yet. You see all these things hanging? Yeah those are nests. Yeah birds made them. That's so cool. Are you
sure they're bird nests? Oh yeah there's a hole at the bottom. I thought they, oh there's the birds.
I thought they might have been, oh okay we gotta get out of here. What a breakfast spot. This is so beautiful.
Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Look at this orange I've just been served. You just know I'm getting my
week's worth of veggies in this. Oh that is good. Pineapple, apple, a couple of other things in there.
Hunter's out there, her little hat's on, building a sandcastle with the flour she collected. Breakfast
was super nice. Nothing is going to be happy. A restaurant on the beach reminds us of home so much
because we love going to a cafe on the beach but I just realized they have complimentary bikes right
at the front here. Let me show you guys just how big this resort is as I go down to our villa.
Hello, how are you? I'm good thank you.
Alright you might have missed the villa because I saw a sign for the beach. It is crazy how close
we are. It's like a full adventure kind of area. You can do like kite surfing if you want, you can
get kayaks and e-bikes as well. Oh they have even glass ones that's so cool. I think just in front
of us is our villa and you can see how crazy secluded it is. Like you can't see into anyone's
like room or villa. It's either a giant stone wall or like ours just here on the right of me
a natural like forest with no walls. Oh it's so nice but we're thinking of maybe heading out so
we're not homebodies this entire time. Heading out we're going to check out more of the island
of Zanzibar and then you just cycle straight up and welcome back to our villa. Hey everybody today
we thought we'd mix things up. Literally we've come out to a place called Stone Town and we've
actually headed out here because we're going to be buying some local ingredients from the markets
from the souks here and then we have pretty much come on a cooking class. So we're going to get
everything we need to make our food today and then we're going to go back to someone's house,
our local's house and cook it. I can just smell all the spices. Do you smell flowers?
How about this?
There's always something about the hustle and bustle and chaos of a market. So what happens
when you go into a fish market and it smells bad? How do you fix it? You sniff them in.
So getting our protein. We picked up some chicken and then now we go to the fish section
and there's just fish everywhere. Gigantic tuna as well. Just laid up here you pick what you want,
the type of fish, how much you want. Kai was just walking around going fish fish.
Tuna doesn't smell too bad. Octopoise. Poor octopoise.
There's a stingray. Have a look.
So we actually skipped picking up the spices from the market because instead we thought we'd get it
a way more fresher and come to a spice farm and they're going to give us a bit of a tour before
we pick up the spices. Taste it. It's so spicy. Oh yeah, it almost tastes like grapefruit.
It's like banana and pineapple. It kind of tastes like banana and pineapple mixed together.
You don't like it? I really like it.
What's happening? What do you say? Thank you. That's so cool. What have you got?
On mama and then on Kai. Alrighty, so now we have gone to the local markets to pick up our
ingredients, our fish, our chicken, our veggies. We've got things like tandoori spice, we've got
cardamom, we've got so many incredibly smelling, like really tasty smelling spices. It is also
like almost 2pm and we had a call at 7.30 which we kind of skipped breakfast so this is all smelling
so good. I am so hungry but if you have a look here we've just come into a traditional house.
It is just made out of, as you can see, just mud between sticks and then above us we have bamboo
with some more wood and this is going to be our kitchen. So we're just going to
pretty much separate all the different tasks so we can get lunch done quicker.
Chef Stephen is back. African style. And this is capsicum and that's onion. Mushy. Mushy and spices.
It's smelling amazing isn't it? Nicole is grating the coconut.
Our chef. Right so we're looking to see if there's any little rocks or stones in our rice.
Nope that looks clean. Is it all clean?
Kind of close. Good work buddy. And then there are five different coal, like cooktops if you
want to call them that and we're just going to be cooking our different food from our mains to our
To try the curry is so good Steve. It is? Oh yeah. The spices they have here is just...
There's a spice market straight behind us.
Makes me want to buy some of the spices to take with us. True.
Bit of deja vu but you don't know that yet. We've just arrived at probably the most famous
restaurant here in all of Zanzibar. It is called The Rock Restaurant and you're about to see why
it's called The Rock. But we did try and come here two days ago. It was a super moon, full moon,
high tide and let's just say it was chaos. To get to this restaurant you actually need to go there
by a boat during high tide and uh because of the crazy high tide we had the boat was rocking. There
were waves everywhere. They literally had to get buckets and empty the boat because it was so full
of water. So we thought you know what let's reschedule. So it's two days later and we've
headed back. Like when we came back to our hotel after giving up on this place we went swimming in
the pool. And you should see the waves that were rolling up over the wall and into the hotel where
we were staying. It was wild. Looks just a little bit different to the last time we came down. So
we've come during low tide but the high tide is just starting to come in. So it means that I think
we can walk there and then we're going to be catching the boat back. Look at this. We were actually
talking to the owner when we were here and he said that basically he rents The Rock. He built
a restaurant on top. What a unique idea right? A.K. this became the most popular tourist attraction
in Zanzibar and the government was like we need a slice of that. Hunter where's all the water right
now? Wasn't this full of water last time we were here? Yeah but now it's low tide. It's low tide. That is one
amazing thing with Zanzibar. Hunter has been able to learn all about high tide and low tide because
the tides here in Zanzibar are extreme. Is the water warm? I think we have a semi walkway. I know it's
definitely starting to fill up. All the water here is so warm. I 100% think that will be
fully just flooded by the time we are done at dinner. 100%. Wow look at the water from here honey.
There it is. The Rock. It's definitely super cool when you see pictures and images and even the walk
up to The Rock restaurant. It's this little thin piece like at the front. So you think it's this
tiny building but they can actually have quite a lot of people when you first walk in. It just
fully opens up. They've got these side kind of balconies that they've built as well as like a
smokers drinkers kind of section at the back. If you can come up here and sit up back for sunset
that is probably the best seat in the house because you just have this corner piece and just
the beautiful stunning Zanzibar sea. They've got a little model so you can see just what this little
restaurant is. What have you got there? A menu. It's very fancy. There's a cocktail called The
Rock. I feel like I have to get it. Sounds good. And then did you want to try? There's a Moscow
Mule. It's like our safe option. And then I'm thinking pasta with lobster. Yeah. A grilled fish.
Yeah that sounds great. Ice cream for dessert. Okay like what about this? Sorted.
Wow. It turned green. Yeah this is The Rock. Cheers Steve. Cheers. Hunter where's your juice?
Did you already drink it all? Hunter got a fresh mango juice but they destroyed that instantly.
Cheers. Cheers Sissy. How is The Rock? So good. Kala wants to cheers.
Cheers Daddy. Oh you got pasta as well? I did. I got the lobster pasta. Do you want to see? And
then they got the same thing just without all the lobster in it. They didn't feel like lobster.
But let's try this Hunter. What do you think Colour Bean? I see a bit of bit of lobster.
So I've got catch of the day on a bed of veggies and interesting that's got potato chips
as a garnish. Interesting.
Oh my goodness. How are we going to get back Hunter? The water's all over.
We have to go on the boat. This is so beautiful Steve. What a way to end our time in Zanzibar.
No they said we got to walk back. How are we going to walk back?
Glad we still got to do the boat ride back. And there you guys go. So if you come in at low tide
you can time it right. You can do the walk out and you can catch the boat back.
Okay I feel like I would rate that place 10 out of 10 for experience and the vibe.
Maybe like 5 out of 10 for the food. I feel like the food here in Zanzibar has been so good.
This place was just average but the experience I think it's worth coming anyway.
It is our final morning here in Zanzibar.
And we are just...
Every time we guys show you this sort of village day and night it's flooding.
Look at this beautiful sunrise. Enjoyed your time in Zanzibar? It's been good huh?
