Can you apply for Obamacare anytime? (Special Enrollment Period Explained)
Dec 4, 2024
What's up everyone! Welcome back to a brand new video here at Cuspide Insurance. My name is Carlos,
I'm a licensed agent and today we are going to talk about can you enroll after the open
enrollment season is over. Let's talk about it. Alright so I just want to start off by saying
that yes you can enroll after the Obamacare open enrollment season is over. There's actually many
ways so this is what this whole video is about. We're going to get into the many ways that you
can enroll. So if many of you are watching then you can probably enroll right now. So let's head
over to the screen and let's get started. So as you can see here we are on the official healthcare.gov
website. There's two options that you could go with. We're going to talk about the first one for
now and then we're going to come back and check on the income-based one. So let's click continue here
and these are all the ways that you can kind of enroll once the open enrollment is over. So
the first one and probably one of the most common is if you lost Medicaid or CHIP, the Children's
Health Insurance Program and you can actually, it goes back one year so on March 31st 2023.
Since March 31st of 2023 if you've lost Medicaid then you can enroll right now if you do not have
coverage. Followed up is your household size, any changes. Now all of these start being usually
because it's 60-day limit except the Medicaid one. So all of these and under are 60-day window
limit that you have. So what do we have here is household size. If you got married, if you had a
baby or if you gained or became a dependent, if you've had any of these within the past 60 days
then you can enroll. And lost qualifying health coverage is another one or if you got divorced.
So you could see for yourself on the screen any of these that you may have had in your life
recently in the past 60 days you could use this as a way to apply when open enrollment season is over
which is November 1st through February 15th of every year. If you were denied Medicaid that's
also another common one. A lot of people are denied Medicaid and guess what they can use that as
sort of another popular one here is if you were denied Medicaid you could use that as a
reason to apply. If you've recently gained citizenship or a lawful presence in the U.S.
so if you just moved to the U.S. you finally have your green card, you got a social security number,
all that stuff you could use that to apply. If you've changed locations, if you change address,
you move somewhere else, if you've had a change in income, all of these things on the screen are
things that you could use to sort of apply for health insurance outside of the open enrollment
period. Other thing is if you will lose a qualifying health coverage says here like
for example if you're at your job and they're gonna like you got fired or whatever the reason
could be that you're gonna lose the coverage. If you currently have a plan and you're gonna
lose the coverage for whatever the reason you could use that as well to apply right now.
So obviously if you choose none of these apply to me if you have none of these then you obviously
cannot enroll but this leads me to the final one and it's probably the most common and a lot of
people actually don't know this and it's that you could qualify if you are under 140 to 145
maybe even 150 percent of the federal poverty level. So up on the chart here is the 2024
income limits so if you and your household are under the 140 percent income level then you could
qualify right now. So let's do a live example let's say I'm a single person making a thousand
eight hundred dollars a month so which it should qualify under the 140 percent of the federal
poverty level and I'm 25 I'll put my age 23 add this person continue and it's gonna ask me if I
need any help with any other following if you do need help you put yes if you don't no that but
you should put no and right here says it looks like you may qualify for a 2023 special enrollment
period based on your estimated income and household information and it says 2023 that's probably just
it's actually 2024 so you can apply if you are under 130 percent or 140 percent of the federal
poverty level depending on your household size if you have two people that you have to have a higher
income three people higher income etc we've made videos on the Obamacare income limits so you can
check those out but yeah that's kind of what I wanted to talk about you can there's a lot of
options you could apply with so if any of you saw this video and you qualify for any and you need
some health insurance or you want to make a change to your plan and want to see if you can save some
money call the number on the screen 305-970-8583 you would speak directly with me I'll be more than
happy to help you and your family get the coverage that you need thank you all so much for watching
this video I'll see you all in another one take care everybody have a lovely rest of your day
or night bye
