A 13th century archaeological find in northeast Thailand, in the province of Kumken.
Sawadee krap, hello, my name is Blair and welcome to Around Thailand.
We will explore here in Kumken, a 13th century archaeological ruins dated back between 1118 to
1219 AD, the Kuban Nakumnoi or also known as nowadays the Kupra Pachai.
Today's location at the heart of a modern Buddhist monastery, the Kupra Pachai is a
remnant of the Kerm empire dating 13th century in the northeast of Kumken province.
This was built as a Mahayana Buddhist place of worship for a hospital. It is assumed that
this was built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer kingdom.
It is one of the most northern Khmer remains of the Isan region, logically one of the most
distant from the center of the empire during the Khmer dominance of the region.
The main structure was made in laterite with sandstone used for the door, the window frame,
and for the lintel. The western gate or the Kupra is attached to the main building which is the
hospital or locally known as Arakhaya Sala. It is a cross-shaped. A small library or locally known
as Bananai is situated in the southeastern corner of the main structure. On the northeast
outside of the wall there is a rectangular-shaped pond lined with laterite. Kupra Pachai was
excavated and restored anacytosis method by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand between 1998
to 2000. Many evidence were found from the Bayon period a sandstone buddha statue under a naga
and some partial remains of the sandstone statue where a piece inscripted a Lanchang style
silver-plated buddha statue. This can be now seen at the museum nearby. Visitors can see these
Kupra Pachai ruins approximately 32 kilometers away from the Konken city marker. You can rent
a van, car, or any type of vehicle either by the help of a Thai authority tourism of Konken
or by a Thai friend or by your host. There's so much to see right here in northeast Thailand.
I'll be exploring this region and see this beautiful and amazing Konken province.
