On this channel I specialise in making really complex looking images easy to create so just
follow along with my step-by-step tutorial of this painting and you will amaze yourself.
Okay so as always on these tutorials I'm using the app Procreate. You can probably apply the
process and the techniques that I show you on this tutorial to whatever tablet or whatever
app that you are using yourself. But in terms of this app Procreate I've opened an A4 canvas
which is 297 millimetres by 210 millimetres and 300 dpi. In terms of the colours I've already
pre-selected some colours in this section that you can see. Each of these colours has a hexadecimal
code that equates to that colour and you can find it in the value section of the colours here in this
box. Each of the codes is listed down in the video description. You can type them in one at a time,
press enter, the colour appears up here and then you can start to tap it together yourself.
Or next to the codes is a link that takes you to my Patreon page and you can download the colour
file for free and that saves you some time. In terms of the brushes I'm going to be using today
I'm going to use the soft brush within airbrushing. It's the soft brush at the very top of the list.
I'm also going to be using the medium brush for some of the cloud texture. I'm going to go down
to the organic brushes and use the rainforest brush. In addition to that I may use 6B pencil
yet to decide within sketching and within the artistic brushes I may use a little bit of this
brush which is called Leatherwood. I'll explain them as I go along anyway so don't worry.

notified of future videos that I do. Okay with all that said and done let's get started. So
let's go to our colours and we have this first colour and we're just going to drag and drop it
into the canvas and it flood fills and gets rid of the white. Okay I'm going to create a new layer
and on that second layer I'm going to go to my colours. I'm going to use the second colour along
so it's a very light pink as you can see on the colour wheel. I'm going to go to my brushes and
I'm going to use the soft brush. I'm going to put it at about 20% size and 100% opacity. I'm just
going to put a large brush stroke a little bit past the halfway point. Then I'm going to go to
my adjustments, gaussian blur and I'm going to slide it up to about 70% so keep going to about
70. But I do want it to be a bit stronger than that so I'm going to go back to the layer, layer
two, slide it and duplicate it and it just doubles the impact of that layer. However I don't need to
have two separate layers so I can go to that very top layer and tap on it and we have the option of
merging down so it merges back with the original layer. So now I've done that I'm going to create a
new layer. I'm going to go to my brushes, in the organic brushes and use the rainforest brush.
I'm going to change my colour to the third colour in which if you look here you can see is a very
light orange and on the rainforest brush we're going to have it at around four percent size
and probably about 80 opacity and I'm just going to start tapping in some marks here that's going
to start creating some orange cloud that just stands out a little bit forward of the lighter
colour. Now it's important to leave gaps here so you're just tapping them in you don't need to be
too precise with it you're just creating blotches in the sky really. You certainly don't want them
too uniform so keep them slightly random. We'll stop about this point and then we'll just bring
them across the sky and we can bring these all the way across and it'll get to the point where
they start to appear lighter than the background so we stop with that colour at that point then
go back to our colours and we're going to use this dark colour so we're going to skip the
intense orange and go to this blue colour and we're going to turn the opacity for this
much lower to about 20 percent we'll also turn the brush down to about three percent and then
where it has this handoff in this area you're just going to start to lightly bring in this
slightly darker colour. Okay then I'm going to switch back to my lighter orange colour again
still on the rainforest brush and again at the 80% I'm just going to bring a stripe of this in
to about there then I'll switch again to that blue colour and I'll just bring that in and have
it merge somewhere in the centre there so we've got patchy and then we've got a stripe that merges
together then we're going to go to the smudge tool and on the smudge tool we're going to put it to
the medium hard brush we put the size of that at around three percent and the strength is around
sixty percent and then we can just start to left to right start to kind of mush them together a
little bit we can drag that blue into the orange and then we can push the orange into the blue and
we're just merging them together quite a bit like this just looking at the background sky what I
feel I want to do with that original layer that we'll do it on layer two that works better there
is we'll go back to that light pink we had which was the second colour with the airbrushing and
soft brush we put it up to about the 10% keep it low at around 20% and just bring that effect a
little bit further in over here I feel like I need a bit more light in that sky in fact than we've
created originally I think it worked better if we just extend that a little bit further in this whole
section and it's behind everything else so it's not going to interfere too much go back to our
top layer again and we're going to move now to this orange colour which is much more intense than the
first orange we're going to use the soft brush this time to be a bit more controlled we'll turn
it down to about the two percent size and really low at around ten percent opacity and then we can
just go in and with some of these clouds you can just use the shapes that are already there and
just bring them out to be a little bit more prominent in places so there's a combination
now of the cloud texture that we got from the rainforest brush and then you individually going
back in and just bringing out some of that texture yourself more manually and if there's any gaps and
you want to just be a bit more controlled and fill some of these gaps in then that gives you the
opportunity to do that a little bit more and then especially in this section we can just bring in
that orange and we're going over large sections of it now really I'm almost just coloring it it's
quite low opacity so I can just really go over that area and extend the impact of some of that orange
really a lot further into the sky like I say fill in some of those gaps with some smaller
details and some of this we're going to cover with other cloud features so don't worry too much
and then I'm going to go to my blue color again the first of the two blue colors that's more of
a purple so this is more blue only a hint difference but it is a little bit different
and then I'm also going to add some slightly smaller little textures of this blue in there as
well okay so that's the first effect and we're going to add some more detailed cloud in this
section now so we're going to create a new layer and the first thing we're going to do with this
layer is we're going to change the layer properties so we're going to tap on where it's
got the little n and we're going to scroll down from normal to add and it's going to change the
properties of the layer and give us the opportunity to really bring out some of the light effect
we're going to use this on the soft brush within airbrushing but we're going to change the color
now and we're going to go to these really intense colors at this end which seem completely too
intense but with the combination of the layer property it gives you a nice balance we're going
to go for the red color first two percent size and ten percent opacity and I'm just going to
initially bring in some stripes that are just highlighting the bottom edge of this cloud here
and we'll just bring some stripes across we can bring it over to this section too
then I'm going to put the size of the brush up to about five percent and I'm just going to start
extending some of that effect over into this area make it a bit bigger and just fill in a bit more
of it over here I'll extend it a little bit over this side as well just if if anything to knock
back a little bit of that blue color then mouse us down the same layer we'll go to the yellow
and I'm just going to start building up the yellow this time you can have it extending up into this
section not too far though we don't want to go all the way to the top so just this section
and then across like this and we're going to imagine the horizon point is somewhere here
we're going to define that a little bit better further on we're just building it up in this
section because this is where the sun is setting so the more you go over it the more it really
builds in that luminosity and we can just extend it across the sky a little bit so I'm pressing
very very lightly now it is only on 10 opacity but in combination with that low opacity I'm
pressing on very lightly as well so I'm letting it fade out more in this area I'm going over this
area and allowing it to really concentrate in this bit so I've gone over this quite a lot now
and it's really built it up so this is going to be the backdrop and the lighting that goes behind
much of the cloud that I'm going to add on top you can see really I've allowed it to glide over
a lot of times at this point and it's nice to have it on the low opacity and build it up because you
can see the effects build and build so rather than going straight in there and it being too impactful
you can see it gradually build up and I think that's a better way to approach it I'll just
bring it down a little bit more but not too much okay so I'm going to create a new layer and I'm
going to go to my soft brush with an airbrushing choose the fourth color in this orange again
I'm going to put it down to about four percent size and about thirty percent strength so opacity
and I'm just at the bottom section here I'm going to draw a stripe snap or hold it so it snaps into
a straight line like this and you can see and I can put it exactly where I want it which is about
here and then from that point upwards I'm just going to go over a few times just to blend it in
blend it upwards a little bit I can do that all the way across just a few times so it blends
in fact I'm going to merge that up a little bit more as well let's add a bit more of that orange
up here I could always go over it with the yellow again just feel that we need to get rid of some
blue color I think that will work better
okay we're going to create a new layer and we're going to go to the soft brush we're going to use
this fourth color in this orange color set to about three percent size and about fifteen percent
opacity and I'm going to build in banker cloud that just cuts in over on this side to about here
and then we'll just set one in a little bit higher up as well just initially get a very basic
placement of it and for this one perhaps then I'll put it up to about five percent size and about
thirty percent strength opacity and we're just going to block in a bigger section of it
something like this juice it back down again two percent and again we'll just
have it fragmenting over this section and build in this stripe as well
just some fragmented pieces breaking off near the edge and this bottom section I can just start to
allow a concentration a build-up of smaller textures and more distant banks a cloud just
to break up so we've really got that nice yellow color in that same center area now
then we're going to create a new layer go back to our colors and use this purple color which is the
sixth color along we're still going to use about now we'll change to the soft brush three percent
size and ten percent strength and we'll just start to build up sections of this cloud within the
orange we'll build up some nice stronger blue colors this time now we'll just drag it across
something like this reduce it down to two percent and then we've got another section down here which
I'm going to drag or move that blue across a little bit more over here as well reduce it down
even further to the super small part of two percent because even within the same percentage
you get a little bit of variance and then just extend some of these across a little bit more
I'm just having a few breakaway tufts I'm just going to switch back in fact I'll create another
layer for this I'll switch back to the organic rainforest brush I'm going to stay on the same
color I'm going to have the brush size it's around three percent and the opacity up to about forty
percent and I'll just create some shapes up in this top section that retain a little bit more
of that cloud feel we'll have them merging together a little bit we'll blur that in slightly
so I'll go to the adjustments gauzy and blur and I'll just blur it in to about five percent and
that works well for that top section maybe just a couple more here I'm just going to go back to this
orange layer that we started to add more go back to that orange in fact this time I'm on the soft
brush again three percent size twenty percent strength I'm just going to block in a little bit
more cringe over here just to shut it down a little bit further in this section sometimes you can just
add a bit too much of something and it's easy enough to fix in digital never that much of a
problem okay so back up to the blue layer back to the blue I'll stay on the same settings for
this blue and just add a little bit more of this in here as well because now we've got the orange
base it allows us to add a little bit more of the blue and it doesn't look too much then I'm going
to create another layer I'm going to change the properties of that layer to add and I'm going to
use the soft brush three percent size twenty percent opacity with that strong yellow and I'm
just going to use it to bring out a little bit more of that luminosity in these sections just
to really ramp it up a little bit really sell that light like this maybe I could then extend
it up to about five percent and just further it across a little bit I'm only letting it glide
across the surface just like I was before let it build up gradually and I think that works
quite nicely for us
like that okay so I'm going to go create a new layer I'm going to go back to my colors
I'm going to choose this second color and I'm going to use the medium brush and I need to draw
my horizon line so I'm going to put it down to two percent size keep it at twenty percent strength
so with this line now I'm going to draw a line all the way across where our horizon is going to be
if I hold it it snaps to a straight line and you can move it around so that you're happy with the
placement of it I'm then going to change this lighter color I'm going to put it up to about
forty percent strength again we're still on the medium brush I'm going to put the size of it up
this time to about four percent and I'm just going to build in now just underneath to do
this carefully I'm going to have them merging slightly all the way across like that go over
a few couple of times until you're happy with it okay I'm going to switch that color to the
colors at the top now so I'm going to go for my third color this orange color in fact we'll create
a new layer for it just in case we don't do a very good job of it so we'll put it now at three
percent size and lower than that so we'll put it about twenty percent strength opacity and we'll
just draw go over this again all the way across allowing it to come down a little bit more
and again just go over it build this up gradually and again build it up gradually like this
and another time okay I'm allowing it to be a little bit broader at that side than it is the
other side like this we're going to create another layer and we're going to switch this time to this
darkest color still on the medium brush we're going to reduce it down to two percent size
but higher up this time at about ninety percent opacity we're going to draw a land feature over
this side and then it's going to come down and stop well somewhere about here so having it quite
high up over there here this side of it don't mind too much on the bottom edge we can always
erase and tidy that up we want to follow the horizon line as accurately as we can
then maybe having it thin out so might need to zoom in just a little bit
and having it just less pressure so it fades to nothing maybe about
here then just position it however you're most comfortable with it
just so you can get some of these top features and just clip those across then I'm just going
to go across here and just with an upwards movement just push up so we can get some
features along here maybe trees whatever it is don't need to worry too much about that distant
parts because really all our focus is going to be on the foreground features so
we're just creating some lumps and bumps and it give gives a suggestion of something else
going off in that distant area okay we'll create a new layer we're going to use this color now so
not the dark color but the next color along and with the medium brush set to two percent size
and low now about 15 we're just going to draw points where the water meets the sand and then
you're going to get all this slightly darker color joins it here so I'm just going to have it
wider at this side than it is over here and I go over a few times it's going to be narrower
over this end and then even this section is going to be broader over here as well so you
can go over a few times this section and then it gets narrower as it goes further over there
like this okay back to our colors I'm going to use this color now this third color in and we're
going to really ramp this up so we're using the medium brush that's about 10 size and we're going
to put it up to about 60 strength and I can just use this now to blot in this color in this section
so I'm just going to pressing on to it I'm not letting go I'm just allowing it to block all of
that in initially and then I can go over again and just have it in a slightly more broken way
just to create some variance of texture so it's not quite so flat something like this you can see
that starts to bring the colors together a bit better but we want to add some texture into the
water in the sea in the distance so we'll create a new layer back to our colors we're going to use
this color at the very end see it's pretty much a pretty dark blue we're going to use the medium
brush but we're going to have it really low at two percent size and about 20 strength and we're
just going to build in some breaks in the water in fact I need to have it even lower than that
so about one percent you don't need to agonize over this you're just creating some sections
where you're going to get breaks in the water the less time you spend agonizing over this the better
just get some real suggestions of breaks and stripes coming into the water there as well
not going to do it over there because it's too distant so it's predominantly up in this section
you could turn it up a bit more actually about 30 percent something like this and we can add some
more here as well into the sand area so the sand area this is all sand too but this is where the
water meets the sand so you just get a slightly different tone a different darker color when it
meets there it's wet sand then we're going to go to our brushes we're going to go to the artistic
leatherwood brush now I've changed the properties of this leatherwood brush so if you tap on it
and you go to the stroke path I've changed this area so it would be lower down normally I'll put
it up to 40 percent four zero and that allows us to go in there with a small size so about
the lowest part of two percent and about 40 percent strength and we can go in there now
we can just have a zoom in a little bit you can see it's got a broken quality to it
we can go in there and just add some texture and it just breaks up the water a little bit we don't
really need a lot of this in fact so we if anything could undo that and put it down to a
lower strength really quite low at about 15 and allow it to build up the texture here a little
bit without being over the top go over a couple of times maybe okay I'm going to create a new layer
so on this new layer we're going to stay on the leatherwood brush same settings but we're going
to put it up to about five percent size and 15 strength and we're just going to allow just a
couple of random kind of placements if you do it up and down you're going to get the wrong movement
so it needs to be sideways you can allow it to build up left right and it just gives you some
random shapes some random kind of blotches in the sand maybe some foot marks that kind of thing
and you can always turn it back down for the more distance you put it down to three percent
maybe get some more over here further away or as it meets the sea maybe even further down to two
percent you can get some more over in this section we're just getting the suggestion of them in there
first and we can always go back over and manually put some extra texture in there as well back up
to five percent or higher six percent as it gets closer to us they get bigger like that okay create
another layer i'm going to use this third color from the right on the middle layer i'm going to
go to my medium brush put it at around four percent size and 30 opacity and i'm just going to
build in a couple of bounds here where i want the grass to be growing from now as soon as i've done
that i can put it up to 10 size and just allow them to merge down a little bit something like
this and if i want to just soften them in i can always go to the adjustments gaussian blur and
just blur that in a little bit to like 10 just there as a guide initially i'm going to draw some
sand from that point so i'll create a new layer for the sand and i'm going to go to my sketching
6b pencil and i'm going to go to my grass colors down here so i'm going to go for the black color
initially and i'm going to put the size of my sketching brush quite high at about 50 but reduce
it down to about 80 strength and i'm initially just going to do some some grass growing from here
now i'm going to have it generally sort of wind swept looking i'm going to do a few tufts like
this i don't want to do too many in this black color because i'm going to add some lighter ones
over the top but i want to build up a concentration where it's growing from so i need like a dark base
and then when i add some lighter greens over the top they'll be highlighted and stand out as being
separate i want them all growing from pretty much the same area here for this and then maybe some
more over here maybe a collection i could decide there's going to be a section here that it all
grows from you don't need to agonize over this to keep it quite free and easy
and then i can add more over here too
i'm just going to scribble over this bottom section i really want to black in
some of these lower areas so that we've got a real dark section
i'm just scribbling over this lower section for some of these
like that okay so i can then switch to a different color i've got this dark green
we'll try some of that it's not going to be dramatically different but it just starts to layer it
do a little bit of this but not too much because we need to leave room then for some lighter colors
so i'm going to go for this third color in and that should be dramatically lighter and you should
see that highlighted now which is what we're going for we can add some of that into the mix
i'm just allowing this to build up
like so some more over here as well
now we go to this lighter color on the end and again we can add
some more of that in the mix as well just to create some nice highlights
and we can do some sections that are out on their own as well they don't all need to be
coming from the main clumps add some little sections that are just springing out on their own
okay i'm going to create a new layer back to my colors i'm going to use this second color in at
the top again with my soft brush down to two percent size and forty percent strength and
we're just going to start building some of this in in fact we'll put that layer underneath the grass
and we'll start building in some shadow we want our grass to be kind of merging with the
environment i want it to look like it's coming from a place so in fact i'll put it up to four
percent size keep it at the forty percent opacity and just start to create some shadows for it to
sit right keep it a little bit fragmented still it doesn't really need to be overly thought out
something like this maybe we'll also change to the black color which is the first color on that
middle row and we can further push that a little bit not too much though i'm going to create a new
layer go back to my colors got this nice blue color stay on the soft brush but i'm going to put
it up to about 10 size low on the opacity at around 10 and i'm just going to bring in this
nice blue color in this corner we've got a nice change of tone build it in gradually pop it in a
extend it across a little bit too like this create a new layer back to my colors i've got
this lighter color now so the fourth in will stay on the soft brush put it down to about two percent
size and about 20 strength and where this comes in now i'm just going to build in a section it's
just highlighted it's catching the light a little bit more in fact i'm going to turn it down so it's
too strong that so i'll put it down to about 10 and bring it in a little bit let it blend out and
i'm going to do the same along this edge too so we've got a couple of kind of ripples they're
just catching the light a little bit more like this so we can also have some slight facts i'm
going to turn it down a bit more so the lowest part two percent still at the 10 and maybe just
some breaks and disturbances in the sand here and you don't need to really get too much into the
specifics of some of these details just some suggestion but i do want to create some ripples
in the sand there so with this third color along now and i'm going to turn the brush size up to
about five percent keep it at ten percent i'm just going to build in some slightly lighter color in
this section i feel like it's a little bit too dark it's ending up too dark so lock that in a
little bit lighter maybe over a little bit over this side as well but not too much just a hint
of it this okay so i'm going to create a new layer back to my colors and i'm going to use
this color which is third in from the right in the middle row stay on the soft brush i'm going
to turn it down to about the lower part of two percent and about ten percent opacity and we can
just use this with the lower part of two percent just to build in some stripes some slight ripples
put it up a little bit actually it's about 15
as they get closer to us perhaps they're just going to get a little bit further apart
and then with this lighter color the fourth thing we can just perhaps just in between some of those
create some lighter stripes as well again i don't feel inclined to spend too long getting these
absolutely precise it's just creating the at a glance the kind of the general look of that
something like that perhaps we can take this first color over here and we can do something similar
over this side as well just get some stripes coming in here maybe just a hint of something
but generally speaking i think i'm just going to add some random textures in there i think it's
going to work a little bit better so i'm going to go for this dark color on that middle row
two percent size and up to about 20 strength and now i can just go in there and create some broken
textures i think this is going to generally work a bit better just to create some blotches some
noise and broken things now i've got one type of color there but we can change so we can go from
that color to the purple in some areas might look really nice so try a couple of purple bits here
and you can really have a lot of fun with the texture it's actually something that's very
satisfying so then you can go from that color to a highlight perhaps even turn the strength of the
odds about 30 and really be precise with the one percent and just go in and amongst the shapes and
pick up some of the edges so imagine the light's coming from over here obviously so if you've got
that thing that dips then you're going to have this nearest edge is going to catch the highlight
like so if you just exaggerate that a little bit it really does sell the idea that it's
catching the light and we just create some general disturbance and
texture in these areas flipping between different colors
and different sizes so we can put it back up top end of two percent change it up a little bit you
decide the level of texture that you want i'm going to then go from that to this darker color
the second color in and maybe just make some more of these features so i need to do this
more precise i'm going to put it down to one percent and just make some more features in
the sun they're a little bit more prominent now you can really spend a long time doing these kind
of textures so i'm just going to spend a few more minutes on this i think the more of this you do
the more it's going to feel real and grounded i think it works really nicely i'll go to this
dark blue again just create some more a variety of textures basically i'm just alternating between
the different tones which is really nice and also the black color because sometimes you might look
at this grass and think well maybe the shadow is just not strong enough so we could just go in there
and just further add to that size and push up five percent exaggerate some of this shadow a little bit
once i go back in with my nice sand color here down to three percent size 20 opacity and i'm
just going to take this back section just sharpen that up a little bit with the highlights
it's behind the grass so you're not interfering with the grass and that's why it works better
maybe some more tufts of grass here in fact so we'll go back to the grass layer on top
back to one of my darker greens so maybe that green and back to my sketching 6b and just some
more tufts of grass just sticking out add to my layer with the texture and with the shadows again
and i can just switch immediately back to my airbrushing and the soft brush still at the
settings it was before so i can just give some of this grass a sense that it belongs in the place
that i've just added it i'm just going to go to my highlighter color highlight color and just
pick out some details now so we've done quite a lot of the darker colors i'm just going to use
this lighter color now just to cut across some of the features add some highlights in addition
to the darker colors that we've been using the effect is very much about the highlights and the
shadows really so it's the combination that really is going to help i think i might just go
create one more layer put it on top of everything else at the very top change the end to an add
because i really like going in now with the brightest color so i'll go in with the red
on the soft brush two percent size ten percent strength and i'm just going to go in and just a
little bit more of that red just along there and change it to the yellow and also add a bit more of
that yellow as well back to the red again about ten percent size five percent opacity and then
just a couple of times in this area just to bring some more of that glow in like that one last layer
back to my purple blue and i can't help but just want to go back in there and just create a little
bit of a contrast to those bright colors just with a hint more of a dark color just cutting
across there too doesn't take much just a little bit just to really add to that drama and i might
spend a little bit longer at a later point just building in some more of the cloud texture as well
okay i hope you've enjoyed following along with this tutorial if you have don't forget to press
