Let's go on a field trip
with Katie's Classroom.
Let's learn about winter sports.
There are so many fun things we can do outside during winter.
Like skating,
snowshoeing,
and skiing.
That's me skiing down the hill.
Hi friends!
It's a beautiful snowy day.
Want to come skiing with me?
I'll teach you all about it.
Come on!
We need some special equipment.
When we ski,
we wear a special kind of boot on our feet called a ski boot.
There are lots of buckles to make it tight and secure.
And we have two skis.
One for each foot.
One.
Two.
The boots attach to the skis like this.
Ta-da!
Now the skis are attached to our feet.
These are ski poles.
They help us when we're skiing.
We can use them to push ourselves around.
Like this.
The skis slide along the snow.
Wee!
They can go really fast when we go down a hill.
Are you ready to try it?
Here we go!
Wee!
The poles help us keep balance.
And we make turns back and forth across the hill so we don't go too fast.
It's so much fun!
We made it all the way down to the bottom.
To get back to the top, we can take the chairlift.
Skiers sit on the chairlift,
and it carries them all the way to the top of the hill.
There are lots of chairs for all the skiers.
Once we get to the top,
we can stand up and slide off using our skis and poles.
It can take a bit of practice.
Whoops!
We can go back up together.
Come on!
We have to wait our turn.
Then we slide up to the right spot,
wait for the chair,
and sit down.
Off we go!
Let's put down the safety bar.
That's important.
You get a great view of the ski hill from up here.
You can see so much.
Hello down there!
We're getting close to the top.
Time to lift the safety bar
and slide off.
We did it!
Let's go back down.
The chairlift isn't the only way to get to the top.
This is called the magic carpet.
These are sometimes used on smaller hills
where skiers are learning how to ski.
I'll show you how it works.
Using our poles,
we push our skis onto the carpet
and it moves like a conveyor belt
taking us up the hill.
Here we go!
Up, up, up!
Once we're at the top,
we slide off
like this.
So much fun!
Hey!
I see my friends Liam and Josie.
Hello!
They're just learning how to ski.
Josie practices with her mom on a rope.
When she feels ready,
she can try on her own
like her brother Liam.
He can ski all by himself.
When I first learned to ski,
I skied like this
with my skis in a triangle shape
like a pizza slice
to go nice and slow.
Skiing takes a lot of practice
before you can go fast down the hill.
Great skiing, Liam!
Great skiing, Josie!
Say hi to my classroom friends!
We're going to go try another winter sport.
Let's try ice skating!
For skating on the ice,
we need ice skates.
We have to make sure
they're nice and tight.
Sometimes they can be a bit tricky to get on.
And it can be tricky to balance.
Whoa!
I haven't had as much practice ice skating,
but it's fun to try!
Here we go!
The blades on the bottom of the skates
glide on the ice.
It can feel a bit wobbly sometimes.
That's why it's important
to always wear your helmet,
especially when you're just learning like me.
Whoa! Whoops!
I lost my balance,
but I'm okay!
I can get back up and try again.
Let's try skating in a circle.
Whoa!
We did it!
Well, this winter sport is a bit tricky for me.
But hey, I see my friend Jesse!
Hi, Jesse!
Let's see what he can do.
Oh, he can go really fast!
Wow!
And skate backwards.
Amazing!
His circles look a lot less wobbly.
He's had a lot of practice.
Great skating, Jesse!
Why don't we try a winter sport we all can do?
Let's try snowshoeing!
These are snowshoes.
We can strap them on to our winter boots,
like this.
They attach to our feet,
and then we can go for a walk in the snow.
Snowshoes make walking in the snow a lot easier.
And they've been used for thousands of years.
The bottom of the snowshoes have a special grip to stick to the snow.
It makes walking in the winter woods much safer.
Which is nice,
because the outdoors is so beautiful in the winter.
There are so many fun things we can do in the snow,
like skiing,
skating,
and snowshoeing.
This has been a super fun day exploring winter sports.
Thanks for coming along with me!
I think now it's time for some hot chocolate.
See you again soon!
