The pharaoh Tutankhamun ruled around 3,350 years ago. On his death at the age of around 19 he was
mummified. His death mask of 10 kilograms of solid gold was placed on his shoulders and this
was then placed in the first coffin made of solid gold inlaid with precious gems.
This entire coffin was placed inside another coffin beautifully crafted in wood and covered
in gold and semi-precious stones. Again this coffin was placed inside another golden covered
coffin crafted in wood and then placed in the granite sarcophagus. In his tomb here in the
Valley of the Kings it looks as if the artwork on the tomb walls enhanced the look of the tomb.
Yet in reality it could barely be seen as the sarcophagus was placed within four shrines
each built around the sarcophagus in layers and each one beautifully decorated.
When Howard Carter opened the tomb he found it crowned with objects from the pharaoh's life
unceremoniously piled into the room. This shrine to Anubis would be carried along in procession.
As Tutankhamun's body was nested within multiple coffins so his organs were the same.
They were placed inside these alabaster canopic jars that was placed inside this beautifully
decorated alabaster box and then placed within this shrine. One of the most beautiful items
aside from the coffins must be Tutankhamun's throne decorated with his cartouche on the side
and a beautiful scene of King Tutankhamun with his wife and our sister Ankenesamun.
We can see the wheels of two of Tutankhamun's chariots in the foreground together with the beds
in the shape of animals to the right. Almost 5,400 objects were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun.
Every aspect of Egyptian life was present either to ensure that the king was thoroughly equipped
for the afterlife or as a manner of disposing of anything to do with the cult of Aten which
his father Akhenaten had created disrupting all religious life in Egypt. The young king
reversed this decision returning the religious center back to Thebes.
