Ways. All right, and I just kind of saw that on the comment. I also saw in the news as well

So, uh, please stay safe guys. Uh, don't go out if you don't have to
Um, and hopefully you know the storm will go by okay guys
Idiom
I would like to proceed with the lesson.
It was written in the comments that a big typhoon is coming in Japan now,
and I also read it in the news,
but I was watching a Facebook post saying that the wind is strong,
so please be careful not to go outside if you are affected by a typhoon.
OK.
Well, anyways, let's get into today's lesson.
All right.
So, today, we're going to start with this word,
wear heart on one's sleeve,
to wear your heart on one's sleeve.
OK.
So, before I talk about the definition of wear your heart on one's sleeve,
I'm going to give you guys a couple of examples of a person who wears their heart on their sleeve.
OK.
So, let's say, for example, you have a friend who has been studying for the TOEIC exam for a couple of months.
Let's say he was decided to study for the TOEIC exam,
and he was working really, really hard for three months.
He was hitting the books for three months
because he wanted to get over an 800 on his TOEIC score.
So, he took the test, and the results came back,
and he got an 820 on his TOEIC exam.
So, he's very excited, and he says,
Hey, Jun, guess what?
I got an 820 on my TOEIC exam.
I can't believe it.
I'm so excited.
This is somebody who wears his heart on his sleeve, right?
He is showing his excitement.
He is super excited that he got over an 800 on his TOEIC exam.
So, he's showing you his excitement.
He's not hiding anything.
Or, maybe it's the opposite.
He was hitting the books for three months to get over an 800 on the TOEIC exam.
He gets the results back, and he gets a 750,
just a little bit short of his goal.
So, he's a little upset.
He's a little bit disappointed that he didn't reach his goal.
So, he says, Jun, I studied for three months,
and I couldn't hit that 800.
I'm so mad at myself.
I can't believe it.
I studied so hard.
I don't know why I didn't get the 800.
And, he's showing you his emotions.
He is wearing his heart on his sleeve, okay?
So, when you wear your heart on your sleeve,
you are openly showing your emotions, alright?
You are openly showing your emotions.
Whether those are good emotions or bad emotions,
when you wear your heart on your sleeve,
it means that you are not hiding anything.
You are showing people exactly how you feel.
Okay, first of all, today,
wear one's heart on one's sleeve.
When you translate this,
it means that you are putting your heart on your sleeve.
But, as it says here,
it means that you are showing people
exactly how you feel.
You are not hiding anything.
You are showing people exactly how you feel.
You can use this expression in both good and bad ways.
For example,
let's say that your friend who studied for 3 months
got 800 points.
Let's say that your friend who was aiming for 800 points
got 820 points.
At that moment,
you are like,
I did it!
You are expressing your feelings.
You are not hiding anything.
You are really happy that you got more than 800 points.
He or she wears her heart on her sleeve.
On the contrary,
you were aiming for 800 points,
but you got 750 points.
You are like,
I'm so bad.
Why did I fail this time?
But you are really expressing your feelings.
You can say,
He or she wears her heart on her sleeve.
So, in both good and bad ways,
you are showing people exactly how you feel.
You are showing people exactly how you feel.
He or she wears her heart on her sleeve.
So, what is the origin of this expression?
So, this is actually from the medieval times.
The medieval times,
so a long, long time ago
with the knights who have the big swords.
We call this the medieval jousts.
The medieval jousts.
So, if you guys are into movies,
I think it was The Gladiator, right?
The Gladiator is kind of the setting here.
The medieval times with the knights and their masks.
They are on horses and they have a sword.
And they have that tournament
where they are holding a sword
and they are coming at each other
and they are stabbing each other with the sword.
So, when these knights would enter these tournaments,
it's a do or die situation.
Either you survive or you die.
It's a very deadly tournament.
So, what these knights used to do is
before they would enter the tournament,
on their sleeve or on their armor,
they would put colors,
they would put ribbons for the women
that they loved, right?
So, on their armor, they would have like a pink ribbon
or a blue ribbon or a red colored something
on their armor showing that
this tournament is for you.
This is for my woman that I love.
Alright?
It's a bit difficult to explain, right?
Actually, I didn't understand Japanese,
so I had to look it up.
Medieval times.
In Japanese, it means knight.
So, I looked up the word in Japanese,
and it's called Ikkiuchi no Bajo Yari Shiai.
Do you know what Ikkiuchi no Bajo Yari Shiai is?
In the past, there was a tournament
where knights were riding on horses
and they were holding swords
and they were running and stabbing each other.
There was a tournament like that, right?
I think that's where the expression came from.
In the end, winning or losing
is about whether you live or die,
so the knights would put ribbons or colors
for their women
Today's tournament is for this woman.
It's for this woman that I love.
It's for this woman that I live.
I think that's why they put ribbons or colors there.
Actually, I didn't know this expression
until I looked it up today.
Thanks to this lesson,
I understood the meaning of
Wear heart on one sleeve.
To give you a more easy-to-understand example,
it means that you're expressing
what you're feeling here.
It doesn't have to be your shoulders,
but you're expressing your feelings
Wear your heart on one sleeve
So, you wear your heart on one sleeve.
It means that you do not hide your emotions.
You show your emotions,
the good emotions or the bad emotions,
and you just let people know
exactly how you feel.
Alright?
So, how is it used in a sentence?
He wears his heart on his sleeve.
Right?
He wears his heart on his sleeve.
In the case of a woman,
she wears her heart on her sleeve.
Okay?
Next one.
He wears his heart on his sleeve
so I always know how he feels.
He wears his heart on his sleeve
so I always know how he feels.
He wears his heart on his sleeve.
So, when you wear your heart on your sleeve,
generally speaking,
it's a good meaning, right?
You're showing your emotions.
It's a good thing.
But, when you always show your emotions,
you are also making yourself...
You're opening yourself up to criticism as well.
Sometimes, those types of people are sensitive as well.
Right?
She is a sensitive person
and wears her heart on her sleeve.
Okay?
So, you wear your heart on your sleeve.
You are an open person.
To put it simply,
he is an open person.
He wears his heart on his sleeve.
Okay?
He is an open book.
Book is like a book.
So, books are usually closed.
If they are closed,
you don't know what the story is inside.
But, if the book is open,
Same with a person.
A person is usually closed.
You don't just show your emotions.
But, if you are an open book,
you are letting people know how you feel.
She is an open book.
Okay.
Let's go to the next.
So, this one is you are open.
Right?
So, we're gonna go with the opposite.
We're gonna go with a closed person.
Someone who does not share their feelings.
Okay?
So, somebody who bottles up their emotions.
That means when you bottle up your emotion,
you suppress your feelings.
Right?
You hold your feelings inside.
Okay?
So, imagine a bottle.
And when you put water or soda inside a bottle,
there's only so much the bottle can hold.
After a while,
the bottle is going to explode
because there's only so much a bottle can handle.
There's a maximum capacity.
Right?
When you hold or when you bottle up your emotions,
it's the same thing here.
Okay?
It means that you are holding everything in.
When you are happy,
instead of saying,
Yes!
You hold it in.
You say,
Yeah.
It's good.
It was fun.
When you are sad,
when people say,
Are you okay?
You bottle up your emotion and you say,
Yeah.
I'm okay.
You are hiding your emotions.
You are holding in your emotions.
You are bottling up your emotions.
Okay?
Sorry about that.
Okay?
So, when you bottle up your emotion,
you'll eventually explode.
You'll eventually blow up.
So, it's not good to bottle up your emotions.
Okay?
Bottle up one's emotion.
So, you could say,
Don't bottle up your emotions.
Don't bottle up your feelings.
Don't bottle up your anger.
Don't bottle up your frustrations.
When you bottle something up,
it's usually negative emotions.
Okay?
You can use bottle up for positive emotions,
like happiness and excitement.
But, typically speaking,
generally speaking,
when you bottle something up,
you are bottling up negative emotions.
And that's how this is typically used.
Alright?
Bottle up.
There are two ways to say this.
You could say,
Bottle up my feelings.
Bottle my feelings up.
You can use it in both ways.
Bottle up my anger.
You can use it in both ways.
The meaning is exactly the same.
Same meaning here.
Alright?
So, if you have a friend who is...
You can tell your friend is very frustrated.
You can tell your friend is angry about something.
You can tell your friend is holding these emotions in.
And you want to tell your friend,
Don't hold it in.
Don't bottle up your emotions.
Talk to me.
Alright?
Also, it's not healthy to bottle up your anger.
It's not healthy to bottle up your anger.
And it's the opposite here.
He is holding his emotions in.
So, you don't know how he feels.
I don't know how he feels.
He always bottles up his feelings.
Alright?
It's how you would say it.
So, we have,
Wear heart on one's sleeve and bottle up one's emotion.
Alright?
So, I have two younger sisters.
My sister that is one year younger,
She wears her heart on her sleeve.
When she is happy, I know she is happy.
She shows her excitement to me.
But, when she is mad and when she is upset,
She does not hide that as well.
She gets really crazy.
She wears her heart on her sleeve.
Me, on the other hand,
Right?
So, I'm the kind of person who tends to bottle up my emotions.
Right?
I have tendencies to bottle up my emotions.
But, I do have people that I can trust.
So, let's say to my wife or to my family,
I'm a little bit more open.
But, to people in general,
I tend to bottle up my emotions.
And, I know it's not good.
I know it's not healthy.
It's all about having a good balance.
But, that's just who I am.
She holds back her emotions.
She holds back her feelings.
Wear heart on one sleeve.
For example, when something happens,
he is the kind of person who holds back his emotions.
So, I put it around here.
The same goes for the open book.
I don't think there are any Americans who don't know the meaning of the expression I introduced today.
And, the next one is B.
B. Bottle up one's emotions and hold back.
Hold back your emotions.
Or, hold in your emotions.
Hold in your emotions.
Hold back your emotions.
I think this is a common way to use it in everyday conversation.
If you want to use it in a more effective way,
I recommend you to use Bottle up your emotions.
Let's get into today's homework.
Here it is.

Are you the type to express what you think, what you think, and what you feel?
