On the Utah BDR riding solo and camping on my DR650 as my adventure from WA to VA (days 7-10) continues. North Utah offers vast sage covered vistas, gravel and rocky narrow high country trails. Rousing a moose on the morning trail, deer and beaver dams are highlighted with scenic campsites.
Hey there guys, JR here with you. Welcome to my adventure motorcycle riding and camping channel,
and welcome to episode three of my series, Washington to Virginia on Dirt. In this episode,
we pick up where we left off, Chris and I finishing up a section of the Lolo Motorway in Idaho.
Then I continue solo over into Utah, join the Utah BDR southbound.
Lots of wild camping and wildlife straight ahead. Let's get going.
This is the spot. It's getting dark. It's getting dark. I'm riding really poorly.
Yeah, I was hoping something was going to come up real, real soon.
Chris taking the lead. This will probably
be the last we see each other before we get together again, and who knows when that'll be.
We said goodbye in Hamilton. I've done about another, I don't know, 40 miles just outside of
Salmon fixing dinner. I'm gonna have to do some maintenance on the bike. The pigtail that runs
my pump is not getting electricity. Creek flowing along down there. Nice background sound to
put you to sleep. Good morning. Friday, August 11, 2023. Twin Creeks Campground just
north of Salmon, Idaho. Got some coffee going. Cliff bar and an apple. We're gonna enjoy this
peaceful little campground. It's clean. It's quiet. Take advantage of it. Beautiful morning.
SAE plug runs my pump and other auxiliaries should I desire to. The fuse was blown,
as I suspected, so we'll replace that. Dirty panties. Bear Lake. Just entering Utah.
Been a few days of flabbing it, and I'm ready to get off the tarmac and go check out the trail.
Bear Lake. Beautiful color. Woohoo! Finally back on some dirt. Too much tarmac. To get from
Lolo Motorway, where I got off the Idaho BDR down to here, just had to do it. Tarmac.
Utah BDR has been on my list for a long time. Plan is to go down around Moab. So we're gonna
truck along here and see what kind of adventure is up ahead for us. Very excited. This is
new BDR. We're up at 7,800 and some feet. It is just gorgeous. Good weather. I'm gonna just
keep on trucking. I need to be reminding myself I'm solo. I'm almost 73. I can pick this up,
but it's no fun, and I don't want to injure myself. The solo has got its advantages,
but you got to be even more careful. But this I wouldn't miss. I met quite a few side-by-sides
a little earlier on the groomed roads. Something to be mindful of. I love the aspens.
Hey bossy. Nice little calf you got there. I've gotten behind a whole caravan of side-by-sides.
It's like another beautiful day. Slept a long time. I was in bed before nine,
and I don't have as much water as I thought I did. Opened up my pack, and a liter bottle
that I thought I had only had about half a pint in it. So got water in my backpack,
and not so much for breakfast. Some coffee. We'll get on the trail.
Well, rolling out of camp at 8 30 on August 14. Beautiful morning. Another gift to me.
Another day of life. Got to treasure moments like this. I did drop the bike yesterday
just doing a turnaround in the trail. Got to really be careful doing u-turns in these trails.
A reminder that there's a lot of side-by-side activity in this section.
Most everyone except one that I met was riding very respectfully, and oh there's a moose.
Oh my gosh. Well moose, sorry to disturb your morning, but thanks for the gift. I got to see
a good look like female moose. How cool is that, huh? Beaver dam.
Guess I could get some water here. I'll filter that if necessary.
back to Virginia right now. I won't get back there till middle of September. Getting close
to Evanston, Wyoming. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner all combined. I got a heck of a breakfast here at
Jody's. Place was jam-packed at noon. I got a breakfast you wouldn't believe, and I didn't
even eat the chicken fried steak. I'm carrying that with me, so that'll probably be supper tonight.
Ready, set, go. Look out way out there if you can make it out. Snow on the peaks.
So headed into the high country I imagine. Beautiful quiet ride, no traffic at all.
Hey. Yeah, I'm doing it southbound to Moab and then over into Colorado.
It'll be uphill for you. It's a little rocky, but other than that it hasn't been bad.
There's a couple of water crossings. One side's better than the other. Isn't that always the case?
I picked the wrong one both times. You may want to go up and look. That's always a good choice.
Thanks man, appreciate it. Man, I am having a wonderful day today. The Wyoming weather is
just spectacular. This road is just moving through some stunning scenery. Look at those blue skies,
white clouds. I am enjoying myself immensely. This is living, and I am extremely grateful
that at 72 and three quarters years old I'm still able to get out and do this adventure riding.
I hope to be doing this for several more years,
and I am a firm believer that it's helping keep me young. Put a liquid IV hydration multiplier in my
water pack. Get a drink, and when you stop you feel how hot it actually is, which
isn't all that bad actually, but we got that taken care of. Everything's quiet.
Looks like they're just ripening up though. Maybe they're quinces. They're all along through here.
All right, let's get rolling. Trail getting a little more challenging here.
Up 9,400 plus feet. Embedded rocks primarily. Okay, no pitch flats.
People having a good time on a Sunday afternoon.
Well, we'll ride up here and see if we can't find a campsite before too much longer.
Locked eyes without care could be
that you, that you were making me.
