Welcome to Sculpture Studios. For this project we've got a bit of polystyrene carving for you
as we're creating some oversized rabbits. We've been contacted by Kim Beedy, the Creative Director
at Figa & Co. This is a company that specializes in floral artistry for fashion, interiors and
photo shoots and other occasions and this job was for the Mayfair Flower Show in May 2017.
The client sent us some images of how she'd like the rabbits to look and collaborating with other
images that we found online we've sort of merged the idea of wild rabbits and hairs together
to form the final generic designs to blow up in scale. At the end of the day these figures are
going to be covered in a foliage so Kim wants a basic form blocked out from polystyrene that she
can go straight over with the finish. We start by gridding up the designs and blowing them up to
scale onto our large blocks and we cut the peripherals using a hot wire. Now there are many
ways we can do this we normally start by using a long length of wire and a person at either end
to first cut into our eight foot blocks. The hot wire table is used by one or two people for smaller
pieces and a handheld hot wire for initial blocking out and shaping. With the cubist form cut using
front top and side on references and large chunks taken away with the hot wire here Jess is going
ahead with nail and wire brushes. There's only a small amount I can talk about polystyrene carving
before you get sick of my voice so enjoy the project sit back and relax and I'll catch up
with you later on.
with the forms finished in polystyrene these were then sent to Kim and her team
to cover in the green foliage. Exhibited at the 2017 Mayfair flower show they were put on display
looking right at home in an indoor dreamlike landscape. We'd like to thank Kim Beedy from
Figa and Co for coming to us with the project and we look forward to any 3D work with her company
in the future. Please feel free to leave any comments below as they're always appreciated
