On this food tour of Budapest, first we're going to visit the Christmas market
and try all the staple street food of Budapest and then enjoy some incredible
local homemade strudel and after that we're going to enjoy goulash and some
home-cooked style Hungarian foods. So let's begin!
We are at the Budapest Christmas market and this will be our first stop in Budapest.
We're going to try some of the local foods right here and there is already a holy trinity of
Hungarian foods just in this place. Behind me there's a chimney cake stand, on the left there
is a Hungarian sausage and hot dog stand and just over there is the famous langos, the deep-fried,
very tasty and crunchy pastry. We got our langos and this is the classic one with sour cream and
some cheese on top. In this place here they make them fresh, they start in the morning then
continue throughout the day and this Christmas market gets even more packed later. Very airy
pastry, crunchy on the outside but let's go with the first bite. The pastry is so soft and airy in
the inside but that skin outside is so crunchy, so satisfying and let's try it now with cheese
and sour cream. Extremely tasty Hungarian breakfast option but I like it even on its
own, without any cheese. Cheese is nice and sour cream but even like this is quite quite tasty.
Thank you, bye. Now I understand why this cake is called chimney, not only it looks like chimney
but it smokes like one as well. We got it from the stand over there, they make it fresh on the
spot and then bake it and this is the classic one so now we're gonna try it. Nice and smoky.
Oh yeah. Extremely crunchy outside, very soft inside and of course the sugar gives it sweetness.
Very nice local cake. Well this can be called father of all hot dogs and I got some deep fried
onions, I got some jalapeno peppers, pickled gherkins and I got some mustard on top. This is
also traditional spicy Hungarian sausage, the kolbás and the price wasn't really cheap, it's 18
euros so that's more than 20 dollars but I hope it was worth it. Let's go. How to even bite this?
I just try the sausage first and it's okay, nothing special, a bit spicy but there are even tough
bits inside. Not really what I expected for 18 euros but let's continue with the rest of the
hot dog. So the jalapeno, the pepper is quite spicy, onion is crunchy but cold, gherkins are
and the bread is quite cold as well. It doesn't seem like a completely fresh bun. The sausage is
passable, definitely not worth it 18 euros. So langos was great but this hot dog not so much,
only the price was great. I never like not finishing my food let alone throw it away
but this hot dog really deserved to be thrown away in the bin. Out of the three foods we tried here
at the Christmas market the langos was great, the chimney cake was great but this hot dog was quite
quite bad and not worth even 5 euros let alone 18 euros I paid for it. The sausage was low quality,
the bun was cold and a bit stale and those toppings didn't really fix anything. Also just to
mention all the prices here are a bit higher because it's a Christmas market, obviously they
count on tourists. But anyway we continue with our Budapest food adventure and I am positive that
we're going to try some more of the great foods like that langos or chimney cake and even better.
So let's go! Behind me is a place called Rettesbolt and we went far away from the
touristic city center to escape all those tourist traps and try some proper Hungarian strudel.
So let's go! Very small and cozy place, quite local and they make the strudel here on the spot
and on this table this I thought that it was a table cloth but actually it's a very thin
layer of pastry, quite large and now we can see how three strudels all at once are prepared.
Three different stuffings, apricot, plums and poppy seeds. The pastry is so thin that this table cloth
oven, the one with the cabbage and this is a savory one and then I got the sweet one stuffed with
plums and then there is this one, the pumpkin strudel, probably sweet as well.
But let's start with this delicious looking cabbage one.
Wow! This here is a pure poetry. The pastry is so thin and so crunchy and then it's full of this
cabbage which is savory but it's also a bit sweet at the same time and the whole strudel is very
crumbly. As you can see it falls apart constantly and this cabbage inside, just beautiful.
Okay and let's go now with something sweet, the one stuffed with plums.
This one is not as hot so it stays in one piece. The stuffing is made of semolina and these very
juicy looking plums and it's sweet but not too sweet and then these plums are a bit acidic as well.
Beautiful dessert. Nice and orange color and full of pumpkin. Let's go. Another delicacy, full of
these pumpkin shreds, quite juicy, quite tasty and not too sweet. This is something in between sweet
and savory and I really like it. Cheers! This is a different take on strudel than for example the
German one because it's full of stuffing and then the pastry is just outside. Very thin, very nice
and very crunchy. Full of poppy seed stuffing and then these juicy looking cherries.
Nice and fresh, still warm with moderate sweetness and cherries are so juicy. Amazing.
And now to finish it with this all-time classic, the poppy seed strudel.
It looks amazing as well so let's go. Another great strudel in this lineup of different strudels
but not as juicy as the cherry one. Cherry and the poppy seed I think for me is the number one
and the cabbage one as savory was unbeatable as well. Nice, fresh and that great taste of sauerkraut.
Cheers! What an incredible rettesch or strudel at this place. Freshly made, freshly baked, so delicious
and full of all these different stuffings. It's really worth it to leave that touristic city
center for a bit and then try some proper local food. Really enjoyed it but now we are continuing
Budapest. They're famous for their exceptional Hungarian food and here we're going to go for
our lunch. So let's check them out. Thank you, no problem. We got seated at Paprika Vendeglu.
This is a very busy restaurant. It's always packed so we had to book several hours in advance
and there are always people waiting outside trying to get a table here but we got our in advance and
we are seated and now we're gonna order some of the amazing food that this place has to offer.
Our food is here and we ordered a couple of these cute looking pots with goulash soup.
We also ordered chicken soup, ulhazy, the local Hungarian soup but these they just look incredible
and they smell even better. Just look at all these vegetables inside. The potatoes, carrots and then
these huge chunks of beef. Everything looks so delicious. So let's start. Steaming hot. That
potato inside is absolutely delicious. The meat as well. Huge chunks but nicely cooked. Absorbed
all the flavors of this broth and vegetables. A perfect pairing for this very cold and rainy
weather outside. Cheers. And this is one of those soups where you actually need to chew a lot.
Our main dish is here and this is paprika plate for two and this gigantic wooden plate is full
of different meats and goodies and on this side we have pork medallions, beef medallions, some fried
potatoes beneath. Then we have these huge chunks of breaded turkey meat stuffed with cheese and
sausage. Then this huge leg of a goose, some rice and then on the other side we have steamed cabbage.
Incredible smelling and incredible looking plate for two. Let's start with a pork medallion and
some of these potatoes. It has a very nice crust and I can feel some taste of garlic and some other
spices used to fry this pork but generally it's not very juicy. It's a standard pork meat but still
nice and tasty. I will immediately continue now with the beef medallion and it has a very nice
color on the outside and then in the middle it's a bit pinkish which is a good sign it means it
wasn't overdone. The beef is quite juicy, quite tasty but I do need to chew a bit so obviously
this is not a premium cut but anyway it's still good, it's satisfying. Cheers. I couldn't really
wait to get my hands on this turkey meat stuffed with cheese and sausage. Let's go.
Now this turkey is really something special. It's so juicy, so tasty. The cheese inside,
the bits of sausage, they improve the taste and then this crunchy skin on the outside.
Just a perfect food. Made a mini combo with this stuffed turkey and some steamed cabbage. Let's go.
Such a mild taste of this steamed cabbage and it's a bit sweet, quite soft and it really goes
well with this turkey. It's a goose leg attack time now. What an incredible taste. The skin
outside is very nice, almost crunchy and it's quite salty but also full of flavors and then
the meat inside has this strong red color and the taste is somewhere in between the poultry and the
game meat. Quite fatty as well and this is definitely one of the best meats that I ever tried. Cheers.
This goose leg meat definitely goes for the win.
I have to ask them if they pack it the same way for a takeaway.
This was some amazing food overall. The soups were absolutely great and then this meat as well,
especially the turkey and the goose meat. No wonder this place is always packed and the service
was very good as well. We really enjoyed it and now we're going to continue to our next place.
So see you then. Christmas spirit going strong in Budapest. Another amazing looking Christmas
market. This is the evening one and it's much bigger, much larger and it's positioned just
near that ice rink over there. A lot of great food, a lot of great smells here as well. The
local kurtoš cakes baked on this charcoal fire and then served to the customers. They are huge.
The price is around 7 euros and you can choose many different toppings from pistachio to cinnamon
they have the staple, the sausages, then deep fried pancakes and then they have these flatbreads here
that are stuffed with sausage, fried onions or any other topping. But unfortunately we are full
after eating at that restaurant. We cannot touch any food but there is always enough room for some
hot chocolate. Behind me is Bogras Gulas terrace and we came here to try some proper Hungarian food.
So let's go. We got seated and it's a very cozy traditional restaurant and I think it is nested
in one of the very old Budapest buildings and that terrace outside also looks nice but it's too cold
so we are happy to be seated inside. Anyway we ordered all our food, we ordered a couple of soups
and we ordered several more things that are not in the menu. Cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice,
lamb with halushki and also some deer meat prepared with mushrooms. So let's start with the soups first.
This goulash soup is full of these tasty looking chunks of beef and there are some potatoes,
some bits of carrots and once I cut this meat with my spoon it really falls apart.
There are also these small dumplings inside, halushki style and they're also very tasty.
They really complement everything else inside the soup. Excellent soup, very tasty, nice, warm and all
these ingredients inside but especially this meat which was perfectly cooked. Such a great experience.
Next thing to try is this garlic soup. Nice, creamy, smells like garlic and looks quite tasty.
Wow, beautiful taste. Kind of reminds me on mushroom soup. I'm not sure if there are mushrooms inside
but very thick garlicky taste and again quite quite suiting. But let's try it with this toasted bread
and definitely even better and tastier with this bread. Cheers!
So the pickles, the stuffed cabbage, here you go gentlemen, the lamb stew,
the chicken paprikash and one more meal is on the way.
Our Hungarian feast is here and this looks absolutely breathtaking. I cannot believe how
good everything smells, looks, how tantalizing and attractive this food is. This is a lamb stew
with potatoes and this is a deer and mushroom stew with some deep fried donut-like pastry.
Then we got some pickled vegetable salad and then another great food and this one is famous all
around the Balkans but this is Hungarian take on it and these are stuffed cabbage rolls, this is a
sauerkraut and these rolls are stuffed with minced meat and rice with some sour cream on top. Also
not to forget one of the staple foods of Hungary, paprikash. So this is paprikash with haluski,
with the dumplings and all these things, the dumplings, those deep fried pastries as well,
everything is made in the house, in this restaurant, they don't source from anyone else,
they make everything by themselves. So let's dig in into all this food. I didn't even get to the
deer's meat, I tried the sauce, the jam and a bit of mushroom but this pastry is incredible.
This is so tasty, so juicy, nice, fluffy, airy, just incredible. Cheers!
Beautiful looking deer's meat, the smell is even better but let's go.
The meat is very nice, you do need to chew it, this is game after all,
but then again let's go with this pastry, the bit of mushroom and this meat.
An unbeatable combination, this meat, mushroom, then this pastry with a bit of jam, just incredible.
Next thing to try are these cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and minced meat and this
cabbage is a sour cabbage but we also got sour cream on top, so let's go.
This is one proper stuffed cabbage roll, the meat, the rice inside, you don't need to chew it,
it falls apart. So it has been cooked for so many hours that now everything falls apart,
it's so soft, it's so tasty and the cabbage is not too sour which I like.
Great stuff. This lamb has been stewed together with the bones and as you can see it completely
falls off the bone, so this means that this meat is quite tender, nice looking potatoes as well,
very nice looking sauce, so let's go. Nice and tasty meat, quite soft and you can really feel
it that it's a lamb, there's no neutral taste, this is a proper lamb but these potatoes they
are neutral and they go quite well with the sauce and the lamb meat. Just beautiful chunks
of lamb meat but let's try them with this bread dipped into the sauce. Another amazing dish on
this table. I started to slow down after all this food but I have to try as well the chicken paprikash.
This chicken meat is really tasty, there are spices added and this sauce, the paprikash,
is perfect. There's a lot of pepper in it obviously but the taste is quite good. Also
the small dumplings, they are replacement for bread and they go quite well with this chicken.
Cheers! An incredible food and we are completely full. I don't think we can finish all of this.
This is very hearty, very comforting food, fulfilling and this is the food designed for
the hard winters here in Budapest and all of the dishes were great, very tasty but if I had to
pick one or two, that goulash soup was something completely outstanding and that
deer stew as well. Absolutely amazing dishes. Everything else was great as well,
very tasty, very good but these two dishes just stand out. And this is the ending of
our Budapest food tour. I hope you enjoyed this video and until the next time, all the best!
