Hey tennis fans, my name is Shane Terry and this is Tennis News Updates.
The most coveted achievement in professional tennis is winning a Grand Slam championship.
There are players like Serena Williams and Roger Federer who have both won 20 or more majors.
Then there are some players who win one or maybe a few. Particularly over the last decade,
there have been so many surprise Grand Slam winners. 2024 was the first year in a decade
that there was no first-time Grand Slam champion on the women's side. Are we due for a first-time
major winner in 2025? In today's game, there is so much talent and depth within the women's game
anyone can win. But there are some players who are more than capable of winning a slam but haven't
quite gotten over the line yet. Today, we will delve into five of the most accomplished women's
players yet to win their first major. Starting with world number seven Jessica Pagula who broke
through at the U.S. Open in 2024 making the final where she ultimately lost to Irina Sabalenka.
This was a big turning point for Pagula who had never advanced past the quarterfinals in a major.
Jessica Pagula has become one of the most consistent performers on the tour with three WTA
1000 events to her credit. She has also been ranked as high as number three in the world.
The pressure will be off for Pagula for most of the slams in 2025. In 2024, she lost in the second
round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon and missed the French Open due to injury.
Next up is world number five Quinwen Zhang who had a breakout season in 2024. She reached her
first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in January. She also captured the Olympic gold
medal in Paris and then cracked the top five at the very end of the season. Zhang also led the
women's tour in ACES with 445 just ahead of Elena Rabatkina. In 2025, she will look to do one better
and capture her first Grand Slam title. The Italian Jasmine Paolini also had a career best year in
2024 where she captured her first career WTA 1000 title in Dubai. She also reached the finals of
back-to-back majors at the French Open in Wimbledon. She would go on to make her top five debut where
she currently sits at number four in the world. In 2025, Paolini will try to become just the third
Italian woman to win a Grand Slam title. Next on our list is Madison Keyes who had a very interesting
season in 2024. She got out to a late start having to miss the early part of the season due to injury.
She came back in March for Indian Wells and put together a solid season going 24-12 on the year.
She made back-to-back WTA 1000 semifinals in Madrid and Roman also won the WTA 500 title in
Strasbourg. She finished a year ranked 21 in the world and will not have many points to defend early
in 2025. Can Madison Keyes put it all together to win seven matches in a row and win her first major?
Last on our list is Orange Jabbour who had a tough season health-wise in 2024. She began the year
ranked sixth in the world and stayed in the top 10 until August where she ultimately ended her
season due to a shoulder injury. Despite that, if Jabbour is healthy she would be a huge threat in
2025. She has previously reached three Grand Slam finals twice at Wimbledon and once at the US Open.
She also captured her biggest title at the Madrid Open in 2022 and was ranked as high as number two
in the world. Can Orange Jabbour remain healthy and be a contender to win a major title in 2025?
