Hi everyone, it's Jennifer from FiberFlux. In this video, I'm going to show you how to crochet the linen stitch.
I have here a small swatch I've made and
I used lots of colors so you can really see all those stitches.
I also have another swatch here that I've done with some bulkier yarn so you can see how it looks in different weight
yarn and
This is a really easy stitch to do.
All you need to know is how to chain and how to do a single crochet stitch.
But I'll be showing you how to do both of those in this video. It's also reversible. It makes a nice
sturdy fabric as well.
I'm going to be using some Lion Brand Wool Ease worsted and a four millimeter G hook for this tutorial.
So let's get started. To begin the linen stitch is we're going to be
You can do the linen stitch over any even number of starting chains. We're going to start by doing 12.
So first we want to get a slip knot on our hook.
So wrap the yarn around your fingers to make a loop, bring the yarn behind the loop,
reach in with your crochet hook and bring up the loop and then tighten.
Next we're going to we're going to chain 12, but again any even number will work for this stitch.
So wrap the yarn around your hook and bring it through the loop. That's one
two three
four five
six
seven eight nine
ten eleven and twelve. Okay, so here's our
starting chain.
Okay, so I'm going to switch colors for each row just so you can get a really good idea of how this looks.
You can work this in all one color for all the rows, but for this video
I'm going to do it in different colors just so you can really really see how all these stitches look and how they interact with
one another. Okay.
So we're going to begin row one. So in the second chain from the hook, this loop here does not count.
One two. In this chain here, we're going to work a single crochet in the second chain from the hook.
So insert the hook into the chain and bring up a loop.
Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through both loops. So that's a single crochet stitch.
Then we're going to chain one,
skip the next chain, so in the chain after that work another single crochet,
chain one,
skip the next chain, in the chain after that work another single crochet,
chain one, skip the next chain, in the chain after that work a single crochet,
chain one,
skip the next chain, in the chain after that work a single crochet,
Chain 1, skip the next chain, so we've arrived at that last chain, just work a single crochet
right into that chain.
So row 1 is complete, and you can see what we have so far, okay?
So I'm just going to cut the yarn and tie the new yarn right on.
You can stick with your same color, or switch like me, and there's lots of ways to join
yarn.
I just like to cut it and tie it right on, but if you have a preferred method of joining
yarn you like to do, definitely feel free to do that.
Okay?
I'm going to grab a different color.
I'm going to try a contrasting color this time, this pretty blue color.
These are all my yarn stash leftovers, so they're like half skeins of yarn here.
Okay, so reinsert your hook into the last stitch worked to tie on the new yarn.
Bring the new yarn through and tie that right on.
Again, feel free to join your yarn any way you like at this point.
Working in stripes with a linen stitch and variegated yarn really makes this stitch come
to life, and it looks very, very pretty.
Okay, so we have our new yarn tied on.
Let's work row two.
Reinsert your hook back into that last stitch worked, bring up a loop, and chain one.
Okay?
Then we're going to turn our work.
Now that same stitch, that's the first stitch of our row, go ahead and work a single crochet
into that first stitch, just like that.
And then we're going to work, we've arrived at that first chain one space that we created
in the previous row.
Go ahead and work a single crochet into that chain one space as well.
Okay?
Next, we're going to chain one, skip over that single crochet from the last row, and
go to the next space, that chain one space from the previous row.
We're going to be working the spaces, not the stitches.
Okay?
We're going to single crochet right into that space and chain one.
We're going to do this all the way across, okay?
So just skip over that single crochet and work your single crochet into that chain one
space, just like that.
Chain one, work a single crochet into the chain one space, chain one, work a single
crochet into the chain one space.
And then to finish off the row, we're going to work a single crochet into that last single
crochet of the row.
Okay?
So our next row is complete.
You can see already that these rows kind of interlock, and they kind of overlap, and they
almost create like a puzzle.
Now I have a swatch here.
You can see this is made with much chunkier yarn.
You can really see up close how this looks.
Okay?
So let's continue and work row three.
We're going to switch colors again.
So go ahead and fasten off the same way we did before, and we're going to start on row
three.
I'm going to just tie the yarn on, just like we did before.
Insert your hook into that last stitch worked, bring the new yarn through.
Now a little note about the ends here that we're creating.
You can weave these in as you go along.
I'm just leaving them hanging down just for demonstration purposes, but you can weave them
in as you go along, or you can weave them in when you're finished your project, or your
swatch in this case.
Okay?
So we just tied the next color on, and we're going to work row three.
Insert your hook back into that stitch, chain one, and turn.
We'll just get these ends out of the way.
Okay?
Next, we're going to work a single crochet into that first stitch, just like we did before,
and then chain one.
Then we're going to work a single crochet into the chain one space, first chain one
space we come to, then chain one.
Work a single crochet into the chain one space, chain one, work a single crochet into the
chain one space, and chain one.
Single crochet into the next chain one space you come to, chain one.
We're going to do this until we get to the last chain one space.
Now sometimes it gets a little bit smushed, so you have to kind of search for it with
your hands.
Just kind of pull things apart.
Sometimes the end of a row can get a little squashed.
Okay?
So just work that single crochet in that last chain one space, and then in the last single
crochet where we began our row, you're also going to work a single crochet into that area
as well.
Okay?
So we've worked a couple of rows of the linen stitch, and I purposely did different colors
so you could really see everything come to life.
So to continue with the linen stitch, you're just going to be repeating rows two and three
over and over and over until your piece or your swatch is as long as you would like it
to be.
Now again, increasing your chain in any even number will make it wider, and working more
rows will make it taller.
I'm going to keep working a few more rows so you can really see how all these colors
are going to be interacting with one another.
So I'm going to work a few more rows, and then we'll rejoin in just a moment.
Okay, so I went ahead and worked several more rows of the linen stitch pattern, and as you
can see, when you add more and more colors, it makes a beautiful striped sequence, and
the colors really kind of interlock together, and the rows kind of overlap with other rows.
You can see the back, so it's reversible.
Looks equally pretty on both sides.
So that is how you crochet the linen stitch.
