Improvisation is fundamental when you're working in a music class with children, adults, young people, teenagers. If you have an instrument or if you make music with your voice, then you have to learn to improvise so that your classes are more dynamic. Let's look at an example of how to harmonize a melody. All melodies have an implicit harmony. This harmony has moments of stability, tension, and openness. Let's look at stability and tension. For example, here I have two key moments. There's stability, then tension, and then... You can interpret it differently. You can have stability, tension, or just stability. It depends on how you work in my class, but let's do it as simply as possible. Come closer. The melody starts here. Here I clearly have the two notes of the chord. I'm not going to play E minor because it's G, E, E. I know the song is in a major key. I can only play the note that's missing here. I already have it. Imagine if I play it in minor. And then... I don't have it. That's why context is very important. If someone asks, what chord is this? It depends on the context. If it's in a major key... That's it. I already have it. And then... Knowing this, I can feel the interchange. I know I'm in G, E, E, F, D, D. C, D, E, F, G, G, G. I can stay in C, D, E, F, G, G, G. In this chord. But I can also play C, D, E, F, G, G, G. And when I play that dominant here... Which is the fifth degree. When I play it, I subtract that tension. Because here there's a tension too. But it's not sustained with the harmony. And I go back again. And I can do it all with two notes. Or with two sensations. Stability and tension. Only using two notes, I can harmonize the whole song. And then I can do it with the whole chords. But you have to be careful with the piano. Because if I'm here... I'm not going to put the whole chord here. It sounds too heavy. I can change the position of the chord. The inversion in this case. And here I can... Because I have this bass... Here I start doing weird things. But it's always worth experimenting. To see how you can subtract the harmonic intention. Because it's not about changing everything. It's not about doing... It's not about doing things because you can.
