If you watched our last video I made a pineapple quinoa stir fry and every time I buy a fresh
pineapple I want to get as much out of it as possible. So if you want to stretch your pineapple
a little further and make a delicious tea out of the parts that you can't eat then here are some
things to keep in mind. As always when consuming the skin of a fruit if you can buy organic then
that can help to minimize the contaminants that might be in this tough exterior skin. Organic or
not start by washing your pineapple. At least run it under cool water and scrub it clean with a clean
vegetable brush and you can soak your pineapple in a solution of vinegar and water for 15 to 30
minutes and then rinse your pineapple with fresh water. Once your pineapple has been cleaned you
can slice off the crown and the base and start removing that tough exterior skin. You can use the
greenish brown skin for this tea recipe but since this pineapple isn't organic I'm actually going to
thinly slice off the thick greenish brown skin and use the next layer of yellow flesh that has these
spiky fibrous eyes that are unpleasant to eat and a pain to remove. So I'm discarding the very exterior
of the pineapple and using this yellow flesh with all of these spiky bits. I'm also going to cut out
the core of the pineapple which is also tough and unpleasant to eat so I have this nice clean
yellow flesh to enjoy and all these less pleasant parts to use for this tea. Add the pineapple peel
and core to a large pot and cover with six cups cold filtered water. Add one cinnamon stick, three
quarter teaspoon ground turmeric, just a pinch of black pepper for better turmeric absorption, I
promise you won't taste it, and about one inch sliced ginger. Bring the water to a boil then
reduce the heat to a low simmer and simmer with the lid on for 25 minutes. Add one tablespoon
maple syrup or sweetener of your choice and simmer for an additional five minutes. Remove from the
heat, strain, and enjoy hot or cold. To enjoy this tea cold, allow it to cool down, strain it, and
then refrigerate it until it's fully chilled. This is so surprisingly delicious I really can't wait
for you to try this one and if you love low waste recipes then hit that subscribe button. This
pineapple skin tea recipe makes five and a half cups of tea and costs us around 30 cents in
addition to the cost of the pineapple. And let me know in the comments below if you want to see more
creative ways to use the parts of fruits and vegetables that we typically throw away
because we're missing out. It's a good thing I don't have sensitive teeth because I'm
going back and forth.
