The fear of death is caused by prisoners facing death in prisons or by those who are trapped in the clutches of terrorists.
But until about 130 years ago, do you know that the fear of death was caused by those who were sick and those who were diagnosed with cancer?
Now-a-days, we can even perform organ transplantation treatments in a very simple way.
But in those days, even those who needed a simple transplantation treatment, had to write it down and perform the treatment.
The fear of death that we would die after the treatment, shook everyone.
There is no reason for that.
Out of those who were diagnosed with cancer, 50 of them died within a few days.
It is now known to us that they were diagnosed with septic poisoning, which spread throughout their body.
At that time, the medical world, which did not know about it, did not know what to do.
Many doctors said that there was no other way and continued the treatment.
Only one doctor wanted to prevent those deaths.
He believed that he could prevent it.
His determination and effort to save human lives was the doctor's duty.
He was also given the name and reputation of the father of novel cancer treatment.
His name is Joseph Lister.
Joseph Lister was born on April 5, 1727 in Essex, England.
Since childhood, he had the ability to see the pain of others.
He grew up from a young age with the idea that even though he heard the stories of those who died of illness,
he sometimes saw them directly and thought that he should become a medical doctor.
He dreamed of becoming a doctor who would not be an ordinary doctor, but a doctor who would be responsible for the lives of others.
Like many historical heroes, his dream also came true.
After completing his medical education, Lister got special treatment at his favorite medical clinic.
He became an assistant to the famous scientist James Simi.
Later, he married his daughter, Agnes.
Agnes was a great force in his struggle to prevent death.
At the age of 30, he was appointed as the head of the science department at the Glasgow Medical School.
His daily thought was how to reduce the mortality rate of cancer patients.
If a cancer patient who underwent cancer treatment dies, he thought it was his failure.
In 1865, Lister had the opportunity to study at the research institute of the famous French researcher Louis Pasteur.
Pasteur noted that there are living organisms in the air that absorb substances,
and that these organisms cause the spread of toxins in the wounds.
So, Lister felt that he had to find an antiseptic drug to destroy the organisms that destroy substances.
From then on, he worked hard to find an antiseptic drug.
He bought a drug called Creosote, which is a combination of carbolic acid to clean the wounds.
He used that drug on a patient.
That patient was devastated to die, Lister.
But his wife, Agnes, continued to try and stop him.
After five months of failure, he wanted to use the same drug again.
A 11-year-old boy with a broken leg was admitted to the hospital.
He told Lister that he had to feed his mother and other children who had lost their husbands.
Lister bandaged the wound with a cloth soaked in carbolic acid.
On the fourth day, when he opened the bandage, he fainted.
The wound did not heal. It began to heal gradually.
Lister was delighted.
He proved that the wounds can be cleaned and prevent the spread of toxins.
This was seen as an interest in the medical world.
But he did not expect praise.
He continued his research and changes in the medical world to save the lives of patients.
He used carbolic acid in both the surgery room and the ward.
The death rate began to decrease in the ward under his control.
Even then, the medical world did not praise him.
But those who survived him called him God.
After a few years, he became a professor at the King's College in London.
Even there, the students did not stop praising him.
Whenever they saw him, they were amazed.
In some medical reports, he was called a liar.
But the survivors do not have a sad history.
In 1877, John Wood, a well-known doctor,
who was in a very bad condition,
was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He was one of those who heard Lister's stories.
Lister proved that he could do the brain tumor he was diagnosed with.
John Wood changed his mind.
In the next five years,
those two doctors successfully conducted several brain surgeries together.
After the world accepted his treatment,
Lister lived for 30 years.
He was the first to receive the title of Order of the Merit among doctors.
Joseph Lister, who raised the fear of death for world patients,
died on February 10, 1912 at the age of 85.
For Lister, who was very religious,
social success and earning money were not an object.
It was his will that mankind should be exalted.
The next time you go for a brain surgery,
do not forget to thank Joseph Lister.
The actions that helped him to give you responsibility,
the courage to fight to the end to achieve his goal,
if we grow those actions,
that sky will definitely be occupied for us.
