Hello, today we are going to learn the character 布 bù.
Ancient Chinese character for 布 bù comes from the image of the plaque's root, the radical.
So 布 bù, the original meaning was radical.
And then people created another character, that is 配, to replace 布 bù as the meaning of radical.
And then 布 bù was borrowed to indicate other meanings.
Now read after me.
There is one thing special about this character's pronunciation.
The original tone is the false tone, 布,
but when 布 is followed with another character that is also the false tone, then 布,
the tone changes to second tone, that is 布, but the writing is still the same.
For example, 不是,是 is false tone, then 布, the tone changes to second tone,
so the reading should be 不是,不是,是,to be,不是,not,to be,
it's not, was not.
For example,
I'm a teacher, not a student.
Another example,
要, the false tone, so 布 changes to second tone,
不要,要 means want,
不要 has different usage.
It could be used to indicate don't do something.
For example,
And also we could use 不要 to indicate I don't want something.
For example,
I don't want coffee.
不喜欢,喜欢,like,喜, the third tone,
so 布 reminds the original tone, that is the false tone.
remember that 布 only changes tone when it is followed with the false tone.
OK, read again.
不喜欢,don't like,
不吃,吃,the first tone,
so 布 remains the false tone.
不吃,eat,
不吃,don't eat.
Now let's see the difference.
It means I don't eat breakfast.
And then,
没,didn't,haven't.
I didn't eat breakfast.
So the two sentences,
the same negative form but different meaning.
我不吃早饭 indicates I don't eat breakfast every day.
I don't have the habit of eating breakfast.
And 我没吃早饭 indicates that I haven't eaten breakfast.
OK, read again.
OK, that's all for today.
See you next time.
