Thrown and Altered - Burlap Textures on Pottery

Good morning folks.
Throwing a tiny vase today.
I'm going to use a textured piece of cloth, a piece of burlap.
Just experimenting today, having a little bit of fun.
Got a little bit of time to be able to just come out to the studio.
Currently throwing a Laguna clay.
It's a cone 5 speckled clay.
It's a nice toasty cinnamon color to it.
All right, so I've got a nice piece of burlap right here.
The wheel is spinning in this direction.
So I'm going to start it right here at the bottom.
And as I look at it from the bottom, I'm just going to spin the wheel around.
The reason I do that is so as I spin it,
it will continue to stay on and it won't knock backwards in the opposite direction.
So once I'm pretty happy with that, give it a good tap.
Doesn't matter because I'm going to pull it outwards right now.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
It's okay if the burlap gets wet.
Okay, so now I'm going to start to pull the clay outwards from the center of the vessel.
And it's going to stretch outwards into the burlap.
Okay, so gotta be careful with these long strands right here because that'll cut your clay.
So I'm slowly going to peel this away.
The other half.
So it's a pretty nice texture.
And I'm going to stretch it out even a little more just to give it some uniformity.
I am a little bit out of round and you can see this edge is a lot shorter than this opposite edge.
So I'm going to have to, yes, bring that up and probably collar it in just a bit.
So I'm going to use a rib tool and I'm going to push it outwards from the center.
So you can see that the floor is flattening out just a bit.
And the transition into the wall is actually turning out to be pretty nice.
There's a little bit of a line that's showing up.
So I'm going to need to go in and make sure I smooth out that part.
So a little bit of speed.
I'm going to drag out any clay that's built up.
Okay, so now what I'm going to do is make it a little bit of water.
I'm going to collar in the top just a bit so it's going to be uniform.
I'm going to use a needle tool.
I'm going to slice off just a bit with my finger cupped underneath.
So if it drops into the pot, I can catch it.
Almost lost it.
Now's a good time to go clean out and get all that water out of that pot.
So I'm going to use this piece of leather to finish off that rim.
I'll just peel off a little bit of the material at the bottom.
We'll just wire this off with a little bit of a twist.
And we're good.
Not bad.
Fun little texture.
