Welcome to all.
The first course of Basics of Mechanical Engineering would see a huge success.
So, in similar lines, we wanted to run the second course which is part of Basics of Mechanical
Engineering.
Again, this course will be jointly offered by myself, Professor J. Ram Kumar along with
my colleague, Dr. Amandeep Singh Oberoi.
Manufacturing will be the prime focus of this course.
Manufacturing decides the country's growth.
When manufacturing industry prospers in a country, the growth of the country is also
directly proportioned to it.
Today, there are several tools wherein which the students can think and draw.
But when they draw, they have to understand little bit of manufacturing because finally,
they have to realize a part.
If that is the situation, it is better the students get exposure to Basics of Manufacturing.
In this course, we will try to have an attempt to give you an exposure to various manufacturing
processes.
We basket them in four, constant volume, constant subtraction, additive and we also
try to talk about manufacturing systems and introductory approach.
I am sure this course will be very useful for students in engineering, diploma, practicing
engineering and others too.
We welcome faculty members also to participate in this course.
Welcome to the second installment of the course, Basics of Mechanical Engineering.
We are going to talk about manufacturing in this course.
As Professor Ram Kumar introduced, the need of manufacturing for any economic growth to
generate employment or foreign exchange is very important.
Manufacturing is basically converting raw material into production that is adding value
into them.
The processes that we will study in the Basics of Mechanical Engineering in this course would
be first, we will have introduction to the basic science or physics or chemistry that
is required for manufacturing that is structure of materials, bonds, crystals, grains etcetera.
Some introduction to heat treatment such as iron carbon diagram and metallurgy would be
given.
Then we will talk about constant volume processes such as casting and forming which makes the
base of the any other manufacturing processes, the material is developed into the broad shape
or big shape and then it is further joined using the processes such as welding which
is an additive process because material is added in welding.
Then we have subtraction processes, material is subtracted that is it is removed through
various machining processes which could be drilling, milling, turning or so certain operations
could be there.
Finally finishing is taken care so that the product is produced or brought into the final
shape that is sellable.
Along with this we will have a quick look on the computer numerical control that is
the recent or advanced systems which are there in manufacturing.
We will also cast a glance over sustainable manufacturing practices that is nowadays carbon
accounting is very important with carbon accounting we have to have green manufacturing in place
what are practices for those that we will discuss.
I hope this course basics of Mechanical Engineering 2 would help you to understand basics of manufacturing
processes which would make you to understand advanced manufacturing processes if you wish
to take those courses in detail.
Thank you.
