Sparkling wine production and exports in the EU decreased 8% in 2023.
With new years approaching, having a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate is a must for some.
However, there are fewer bottles to go around as bad weather, made worse by climate change,
hit vineyards hard. In 2023, the EU produced nearly 1.5 billion litres of sparkling wine.
That's down by 8% compared with 2022. In 2023, the top producing countries were Italy with 638
million litres, France with 312 million litres and Germany with 263 million litres. In the same
year, the EU exported 600 million litres of sparkling wine to non-EU countries, marking an
8% fall compared to 2022 export figures. In 2023, Italy's Prosecco topped EU bubbly wine exports
with nearly half the market, followed by sparkling wine from fresh grapes at 17%, French Champagne
at 15% and Spanish Cava at 10%. Meanwhile, EU countries imported 5 million litres of sparkling
wine from outside the bloc, corresponding to less than 1% of the amount exported.
