one of the most underrated factoring
tips is to look for perfect square
trinomials so a lot of times students
will look at a factoring problem like
this and they immediately just say oh
crap a is not equal to one now I got to
go through this AC method box method and
whatever type of videos they were trying
to remember from their notes on how to
factor something like this but the main
thing I want you to look at is or think
about whenever you're dealing with a
factoring problem especially when your a
is not equal to one is to look for those
perfect trinomials whenever my first
term is a square number and my last term
is a square number then think perfect
square trinomials the form of a perfect
stomal is like
this so can I rewrite a 4x^2 in terms of
a squ yeah you can rewrite it like a
2x^2 can I rewrite 9 as a b^ s yes that
can be as a 3^ squ now is my 2 * a * B
going to give me a -2X in this case so
if I did a 2 * a 2X * a 3 well you can
see 2 * 2 is going to be 4 4X * 3 is
going to give us a 12x so guess what
ladies and gentlemen ding ding ding we
can now Factor this using perfect square
trinomials not doing any crazy factoring
technique so what is the factored form
when you have a perfect square trinomial
well it's just going to be the binomial
squared a minus B so in this case if I
already know my a and I already know my
B the factored form is a 2x - 3
