Hi everyone, it's Jennifer from FiberFlux.
In this video, I will show you how to crochet a solid granny square.
This is a pretty version of a granny square in which the stitches give it a more solid
appearance.
It has less decorative holes than a traditional granny square does.
If you'd like to learn how to also make a traditional granny square, be sure and check
out my video, How to Crochet a Multicolored Granny Square and How to Crochet a Solid Colored
Granny Square.
We're going to make a solid granny square and when I say solid in this video, I mean
the stitches are giving it the solid appearance.
So what you're going to need is some yarn and a hook and scissors and a tapestry needle.
For this tutorial, I'm going to be using some worsted weight acrylic yarn and a 5mm H hook.
However, you can use any yarn you like to make your granny square, just be sure and
check the yarn label for the recommended hook size of your particular yarn.
So let's get started.
We're going to begin our granny square in the purple and we're going to work a few rounds
just to learn how to construct the granny square and then we're going to learn how to
change colors.
You can make your solid granny square have stripes as well.
So we're going to begin by putting a slipknot on our hook.
To make a slipknot, wrap the yarn around your fingers to make a loop.
Bring the yarn behind the loop, reach in with your crochet hook and bring up the loop and
then tighten onto your hook.
We're going to start by making four chains.
To make a chain, wrap yarn around hook and bring it through the loop.
That's one, two, three, and four.
Next, in the chain farthest from our hook, we're going to work a slip stitch and that
is going to create a ring in which we will be working our stitches into.
So insert the hook into the chain farthest from the hook and bring up a loop.
Bring that loop through the loop that's already on your hook.
We now have a ring.
You can kind of open that up a little bit if you need to.
And I wanted to mention too, this tail that remains, we're going to kind of hold it along
the edge as we work our stitches and that will weave it in as we go along and it will
save you a step at the end.
The next thing we're going to do for our square is to chain five.
One, two, three, four, and five.
Now we'll work three double crochets into the center of the ring.
To work a double crochet, wrap yarn around hook, insert it into the center of the ring,
bring up a loop.
Wrap yarn around hook, bring it through the first two loops.
Wrap yarn around hook, bring it through the last two loops.
So we'll be working three of these double crochets.
So that was one, two, and three.
Then we'll chain two.
One and two.
Then we're going to work the same thing.
Three double crochets and then chain two into the center of the ring.
So one double crochet, two double crochets, three double crochets, and then chain two.
These chain twos are going to establish our corners.
And if you need to push these aside, you can.
Do the same thing.
Three double crochets, one, two, and three, chain two.
To finish the first round of our granny square, we're going to work two more double crochets
into the center of the ring.
One and two.
I want to stop here for a moment and just show you what we've done so far.
If we look at our round, we have groups of three double crochets separated by chain two,
three double crochets, chain two, three double crochets, chain two.
Now at the beginning of our round, we worked a chain five.
And that's going to serve as the chain two in between these groupings, but also as the
double crochet that will make up these two double crochets that we just worked.
So when we join them like this, it will look like a grouping.
So let's go ahead and do that.
So you have two double crochets that you need in between the groupings.
So what you're going to do is count three chains, one, two, three, and then join that
third chain, join with a slip stitch, just like that.
So this will make a lot more sense in just a second.
So let me just straighten this out and get my hook out of the way.
So now we have four groupings of each having three double crochets.
So one, two, three, four.
It's going to look like a little plus sign.
So when we joined that chain now acts as one of these double crochets.
OK, so our first round is complete.
So let's move on to the next round.
OK, to make the next round, what I like to do is this end that we woven, I like to just
pull this tight and trim it.
That way this tail isn't hanging down in our way.
We'll just get that out of the way.
So what we need to do is get over to this first space.
So what we need to do is just work a slip stitch and slip stitch right over to that
first space.
OK, just like that.
Next we're going to chain five, one, two, three, four, and five, and then work two double
crochets into this space here.
This is our corner.
So look, we have four corners, one, two, three, four.
So this we're going to be creating our first corner of this round.
So work two double crochets into this corner space or chain two space, you can also call
it.
OK, so it's going to kind of look like that.
Next, we're going to be working a double crochet in each of the next three stitches.
So I want to point out right here, these types of granny squares are unique because you're
going to be working into spaces like we just worked, but you're also going to be working
into stitches.
OK, the spaces are these holes or in between posts or what have you.
But stitches are these little loops at the top of each of the stitches from the previous
round.
OK, so we're going to work a double crochet in each of the next three stitches.
So one, two, and three.
So it'll look like this so far.
Then we're going to work the next corner.
So to work the corner of each of our corners here, we'll work two double crochet again
into the chain two space, into this corner space here.
So work two double crochet into the corner, one and two, then chain two, one, two, then
two double crochet all in the same space.
So two double crochet, chain two, two double crochet.
And that is how you work the corners of this granny square.
Then we're going to do the same thing.
We're going to work the side the same way we worked this side.
So work a double crochet in each of the next three stitches.
So one, two, and three.
OK, so our side is complete.
Then you'll work, we've arrived at another corner.
So two double crochet, one, two, chain two, one, two, and two double crochet all in that
same corner space to make another corner.
OK, so our square is beginning to take shape.
We're going to keep going until we reach the end of our round.
So work a double crochet in the next three stitches to work our side.
That was one, two, and three.
That one was a little bit snug.
There we go.
OK.
Then we've come to another corner.
So two double crochet, one, two, two chains, and two double crochet all in that same space.
OK, so we're working the last side.
So work a double crochet in each of these next three stitches.
One, two, and three.
Now this last corner is a little bit different than the other corners.
We worked, if you remember, a chain five.
So again, that counts as that double crochet.
So at the corner where we first began, we're going to work in this corner space just one
double crochet to finish off the round.
OK.
And then again, count three chains up and join with a slip stitch to close the round.
And once you join, it will look more like the other sides.
OK, so this is what we have so far.
It's looking pretty good.
So to finish your square, if you'd like to continue to make more rounds, we're going
to make the next round together in purple again.
And then I'll show you in the round after that how to change colors if you'd like to
do that.
So we're going to again slip stitch to that first corner.
So we have another round of corners to work into.
So here we are at that first corner.
And then we're going to chain five again, same manner that we've done.
We're actually going to be, the round we just completed, we're going to be working that
round over and over and over again until your square is as big as you want it to be.
You can make it small like an Afghan square or you can make a very large blanket.
You could make a dishcloth, something like that.
The only difference with each round is that you're going to have more sides that you're
going to be working.
Our sides have grown and that's how your square will grow.
You'll work the corners the same way, but you'll have more side stitches.
See how we had three here and then this side is much bigger.
OK, so to work our next round, we slip stitched over to the first corner and then we're going
to chain five, one, two, three, four and five.
Then we're going to work two double crochets in the same corner space or chain two space,
whatever you'd like to call it.
That's one double crochet, two double crochet.
Then you're going to work a double crochet in each stitch across.
OK, so one.
Again, we're working these in each stitch all the way across.
Three, four, five, six and seven.
OK, so there were seven this time.
OK, so you can see how it's grown.
Then we've arrived at a corner, so the corners are going to be worked the same exact way
as we've been working them.
So two double crochet, one, two, chain two and two double crochet.
OK, so we have our first two corners established.
So as you can see, it's growing and growing.
It's almost forming, starting to form sort of a triangle shape.
OK, so we've worked the next corner.
Then we're going to work a double crochet in each stitch across.
Same way we did this side.
OK, so we're just going to do that all the way across.
OK, and then once you get to the next corner, we'll do it the same way.
OK, so we've arrived at the next corner.
So we're just going to work a corner the same exact way.
Two double crochet, chain two, one, two and two double crochet, all in that same corner
space. OK, so it'll look like that.
Then we're just going to work the sides the same way we've been doing.
Double crochet in each stitch across.
So after you work a few rounds of this granny square, it'll start to become more and more
intuitive and you'll know exactly where you need to go without counting so much and
keeping track of the pattern.
It'll start to just make sense.
And this is a very easy sequence to memorize once you get through the first round or so.
OK, so we've worked that side and then we'll just work the corner again the same exact
way. Two double crochet, one, two, chain two.
One, two and two double crochet.
All in that same corner space.
OK, and then the final side of this round.
We'll work a double crochet in each stitch.
So double crochet, double crochet in each stitch.
OK, we're coming up to the end here.
Almost finished our round, then we can begin a new round.
And I'm going to show you how to do the next round in a different color.
So you can learn how to do that as well.
OK, so we've come to the corner and we're just going to work a double crochet into that
corner space.
OK, and then this counted as our other double crochet to make the corner.
So one, two, three chains up, insert your hook, work a slip stitch just like that.
OK, so we can kind of straighten our square out a little bit.
Sometimes when you're working, it'll get a little crumpled in your hand, kind of straighten
that out. So the basic granny square, solid granny square, as you can see, the stitches
have a more solid appearance than other granny squares that have decorative holes on the
sides. So these working the double crochets in the stitches give it a nice solid
appearance, even though the corners are open still, but it does have a more solid
appearance. So that's how you work the basic pattern for the solid granny square.
But I'm going to show you just very quickly how to go ahead and change colors if you want
yours to be striped.
OK, so we're just going to I just cut the yarn.
I'm just going to go ahead and fasten it off.
Now, if you have a preferred method of joining yarn, definitely feel free to do that.
I'm going to show you how to I have some pink yarn here.
I'm going to just show you how to do that really quick.
So what you're going to do is you're just going to we can get this tail out of the way,
but you're just going to we're going to locate this first corner of our square.
You're just going to go ahead and tie that next color right on.
You have a different way you like to join yarn.
Definitely feel free to do the way you prefer and feel most comfortable.
I'm just cut that because it was splitting a little.
Then we're just going to tie the new color right on to our square.
OK. Just like that.
OK, we move our scissors.
So we have a few tails.
We can weave those in as we go along.
OK, so we have our new color joined on.
Then we're going to reach up and bring up a loop.
Then we're just going to continue the pattern the same way we've been doing.
So chain five, one, two, three, four and five.
Then in the same corner space, work two double crochet.
One and two.
Get a little bit more yarn here.
OK, so we work that corner the same way.
Then we're going to just continue the way we've been doing it all the way around.
This round as well.
OK, so we're just going to work a double crochet in each stitch all the way across.
OK, I'm holding these tails along the edges I work just to keep everything nice and woven in.
OK, so I'm just working a double crochet in each stitch across.
I'm just going to do this round about halfway because we already know how to do this round.
We're just simply doing this round in a different color.
So we'll just keep working the round the same way we've done.
And I'm going to just go ahead and finish this round and we'll rejoin in just a moment just to show you what it's going to look like when it's finished.
So I just finished up my round of my secondary color and I'm just going to close the round the same way.
Again, we had that chain five at the beginning.
So we're just going to work one double crochet into this corner space.
And then we're going to count three chains up.
One, two, three.
Join with a slip stitch.
Just like that.
So then when we're finished our square, we can break the yarn and fasten off.
So if you did weave the ends in, and I did, as you went along, you'll only have one end at the very end.
So you can go ahead and just thread your tapestry needle, flip it over to the back side.
And when you're working multi-colors, just weave this pink into the pink, not into the purple area.
Send that tapestry needle through one direction, come back in the other direction, pull that through, and then just trim.
So then when you're done, you can kind of sharpen up these corners a little bit.
Just get them nice and squared off looking.
And just straighten out your square.
So that's how you make a solid granny square.
And we've added another color just to show you.
And you can keep going with this as long as you like.
You can make a whole bunch of them and join them together to make an afghan.
So that is how you crochet a solid granny square.
