Like the great Harvey Dent once said, you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself
become the villain. And in the case of the late Padres owner Peter Seidler, he's that first one
while his brothers seem to be the latter, or at least Peter's widow is trying to turn them into
the villains. It really is crazy how it all works, man. Two years ago, the Padres seemed to be like
what the Dodgers are now, just without any rings. They traded for Juan Soto midway through the
previous season, brought in Xander Bogarts, and were getting Fernando Tatis Jr. back from his
suspension. They were forming a super team, only to miss the postseason with said super team,
with Peter Seidler soon passing after a battle with cancer. They then traded Soto away, made
the playoffs with the most wins since 1998 with the help of the pieces they got from trading Soto,
so things still look good, but the future of the team does look a little questionable.
And now they're fighting, from within. Peter Seidler's wife, Sheil Kamal Seidler, is going
as far as to sue the franchise, and it looks ugly. The lawsuit includes many things, including
accusations of racism, and the brothers planning to relocate or sell the team. Really quick as
always, if you're part of the 59% of viewers unsubscribed yet, go ahead and hit the button
if you enjoy the videos, as it's not uncommon for family members to disagree over ownership of a
team after the head of the ownership passes away. Ironically, the Chargers, the formerly San Diego
Chargers, had that same issue, and in baseball, the Orioles were the latest example of this,
before this newest one with the Padres. The late owner, Peter Angelos' younger son,
sued his older son, John, who nobody liked, accusing him of planning to move the Orioles
out of Baltimore, although none of that matters now, as there's an entirely new ownership,
but this stuff does happen. It sucks. Family fighting each other is never a good thing,
especially when it's a situation like this, where it involves a franchise millions of people care
about. In the lawsuit that was just filed on Monday in Texas State Probate Court,
Sheil Seidler claims that Bob and Matt Seidler, two of Peter's brothers, he has nine siblings,
breached their fiduciary duties as trustees of the Seidler Trust that controls the Padres.
She claims that the two have, among other things, irreconcilable conflicts of interest and conspired
to sell trust assets to themselves at far below market prices as they scheme to solidify their
control of the Padres. She also claims that before Peter's death in November 2023,
he had talked about his desire to have his wife be the team's control person,
so the head of the ownership, followed by their children. It also claims that there's apparently
a handwritten list Peter wrote and kept before his death that had Sheil at the top, followed
by their three children before any of the brothers in terms of who takes control of the team.
She says the brothers are trying to falsely cast themselves as Peter's true heirs and that
as the sole beneficiary of the trust, she should control the team. And this is where some of the
alleged racist and even sexist stuff comes in. The lawsuit also alleges multiple racist, profane,
and hateful communications directed at Sheil, who's a woman of Indian descent in communications
made by Bob Seidler, one of Peter's brothers. Bob Seidler's wife apparently made those comments,
while the lawsuit also makes accusations of racist and sexist motivations on behalf of
Seidler's two brothers, accusing them of seeking to wrest control of the ball club
to prevent an Indian American woman from taking what they saw as their family business and
ancestral right. Now, obviously, when you start getting into the whole speculating game, I don't
fully know how much of that you should take for face value, if at all. Nowadays, it's very common
for people to use buzzwords like racist and sexist to get what they want. I mean, that's just something
very rampant today. Those words are used all the time unnecessarily. But hey, I mean, if Sheil has
any evidence of getting this treated due to her being Indian, or if Bob Seidler's wife admits to
it, or they admit to doing sexist or racist things, maybe she has a case here for this being at least
partially racially motivated, as effed up as that would be, considering their brother's own children
are part Indian, being her kids along with this. So yeah, that'd be evil. But again, racist and
sexist are very strong words to throw out there. So you got to be careful with how you go about
that information, as you can't take it for face value without enough context. But it is in the
lawsuit and only makes this thing more ugly, obviously, whether there's merit to it or not.
Because that means either Sheil really was mistreated, including racially, or she's lying
about it. And yeah, either way, that's shitty. And the same goes for the relocation talk when it
comes to not taking it for face value and just being careful with what that exactly means or
just taking it from her side. Because Sheil Seidler's lawsuit also claims that the brothers
might be trying to prevent her from ruining their plans to sell or relocate the franchise and move
them out of San Diego entirely. But again, this could just be a tactic to make all of San Diego go
and be on her side with this whole thing, or it's not. And it's the truth. But either way,
that's a big thing to throw out there. Although she didn't explicitly say that Peter's brothers
planned on moving the team, that more so seems like an idea she put out there as something she
was worried they wanted to do. And part of why they don't want her to have control of the team,
because that would ruin their plans. But it doesn't seem like something that was set in
stone that they wanted to do. And again, this is all just accusations from her end.
Sheil is asking the court to have Matt Seidler, the older brother of the two,
removed as the trustee and have a receivership take possession of the trust property.
In addition, she is seeking both actual and exemplary damages,
attorneys' fees, and pre- and post-judgment interest. She's also asking that the defendants
be denied compensation from the Seidler Trust and to void any of their previous actions taken
as it relates to advancing the Padres' control person. So, the owner. According to the complaint,
Peter Seidler's four brothers assured him on his deathbed that they would act for the benefit of
Sheil Seidler and her children. And Sheil says in the complaint that the promise was shown to be
hollow as the lawsuit makes the accusation that since Peter's death, Sheil and her children have
been quote-unquote effectively ostracized from the team. Bob and Matt have made clear that they
are not welcome in the owner's box at Padres' games and have informed team employees that
Sheil is not an owner and shouldn't be interacting with current and prospective players. So,
she's basically accusing Seidler's brothers of attempting to take full control of the team at
her expense since Peter's death, further pushing her away from any say or control with the team
while mistreating her in the process. She also put out a public statement on the matter on twitter
slash x. She said a lot, but she really made clear it was about Peter's legacy to keep his vision for
the team going. That was the overall theme that I got from it. It's all shitty, but remember this
is all coming from a one-sided point of view right now. Sheil's point of view. Not saying she's wrong
or right. Just the simple fact that everything she's saying should be taken seriously, but it's
also one-sided. So, we don't know the full story or at least the perspective of the people she's
and Matt and Bob Seidler. So, all we can do right now is just see what's out there and wait for this
whole thing to get figured out, but it's definitely not ideal. The Dodgers just won the World Series
and are continuing to party into the 2025 season with an even better roster while the Padres are
just fighting each other. Let me know your thoughts and thank you for watching.
