Officials Are PANICKING As The Cascadia Volcanoes Are Waking Up!

[Music] so Fox rtin Lauren Donovan traveled to the Cascades volcano Observatory where she found out scientists have instead set their sights on another Target that started to rumble imagine waking up to the Earth trembling Beneath Your Feet clouds of Ash rising in the distance and the air thick with the scent of sulfur the Serene mountains that have stood silent for centuries suddenly Roar back to life this isn't the plot of a Blockbuster movie it's a chilling reality facing the Pacific Northwest today the Cascadia volcanic Arc a region that has been largely dormant for thousands of years is showing signs of waking up and when it does the consequences could be catastrophic in today's video we'll explore the looming threat of the Cascadia volcanoes we'll dive deep into the potential eruptions the science behind these geological Giants and what it means for the millions of people living in their Shadow from devastating historical eruptions to the very real dangers of today will unravel the story of these sleeping Giants and the chaos they could unleash the Cascadia volcanic Arc a ticking Time Bomb the Cascadia volcanic Ark stretches from Northern California through Oregon and Washington into British Columbia IIA the Pacific Northwest is due for a major earthquake these really dramatic events have happened in our past and they will happen again this region is part of the infamous Ring of Fire a belt of active volcanoes encircling the Pacific Ocean it's a hot bed of tectonic activity where the juanda Fuca plate collides with the north am arican plate these forces generate earthquakes and feed magma Chambers beneath the cascad of volcanoes Mount Hood Mount St Helens Mount Rainer and more these are names familiar to many but their potential danger is often underestimated the quiet exteriors of these mountains belly the turbulent processes happening deep within the magma is rising pressure is building and recent seismic activity hints at a volatile future what's that going to look like it's a really grave concern for us we really need to be prepared for that eventuality cuz it's not a matter of if it's just a matter of when the question isn't if these volcanoes will erupt but when the stakes are high and officials are scrambling to prepare for what could be the most destructive eruptions seen in modern US History Mount St Helens serves as a potent reminder of the devastation these volcanoes can unleash the catastrophic 1980 eruption blew off the top of the mountain releasing a massive lateral blast and pyroclastic flow that leveled forests and claimed 57 lives ash clouds darkened skies for hundreds of miles and the eruptions aftermath left the region scarred and altered despite extensive monitoring and preparation the sheer force of the eruption exceeded many expectations the eruption underscored the need for continuous surveillance and better emergency preparedness Mount Rainer towering over the Seattle Tacoma metropolitan area presents an even more ominous threat while it hasn't erupted since the late 1800s rers glaz iated slopes make it particularly dangerous due to the potential for Lahar volcanic mud flows that can travel at high speeds and obliterate everything in their path a significant eruption could send these deadly flows down river valleys the biggest earthquakes in the world are along subduction zone boundaries and those are places where one tectonic plate is diving down underneath another tectonic endangering tens of thousands of residents in the densely populated areas Below in addition to explosive eruptions and lahars the Region's volcanoes also threaten air travel Ash plumes from a major eruption can disrupt flights damage jet engines and create widespread logistical challenges the 2010 eruption of aaala yokul in Iceland demonstrated how volcanic ash clouds can international air traffic for weeks hello I'm Bill steel with the Pacific Northwest seismic Network and I'm here with David Schmidt uh Dr Schmidt has been is a a geodesist who has been looking at the Cascadia abduction Zone and deoration of the Cascadia margin in general and we have some questions today welcome David thank you happy to answer so uh we have another episode of what we call Deep Tremor or this kind of rumbling deep along the Cascadia interface uh under the Olympic Peninsula started up about a week ago and seems to have calmed down a little bit today but um brought up a lot of questions about uh what's going on down there cascadia's volcano located near major flight routes pose a similar risk to Aviation safety and infrastructure scientists are closely monitoring seismic signals gas emission and ground deformation for signs of volcanic unrest the Pacific Northwest seismic Network pnsn and the US Geological Survey USGS maintain an extensive array of instruments to detect early warning signs however predicting the exact timing and magnitude of an eruption remains a significant challenge preparation plans include evacuation drills public education campaign and infrastructure reinforcements to mitigate potential damage the Cascadia volcanic arcs connection to the nearby Cascadia subduction zone adds another layer of complexity a large subduction zone earthquake similar to the 9.0 magnitude event that struck Japan in 2011 could trigger volcanic activity or vice versa the potential for a cascading disaster involving both a massive earthquake and subsequent volcanic eruptions is a scenario that emergency planners must take seriously communities in the region are increasingly aware of these dangers but complacency remains a risk officials emphasize that preparation and awareness are key to reducing casualties and economic losses while The Majestic Beauty of the Cascadia volcanoes attracts visitors and inspires awe beneath their Serene facades lie forces capable of reshaping Landscapes and lives the need for vigilance scientific research and public preparedness has never been greater in the face of this everpresent natural Hazard Mount St Helen's the warning we ignored Mount St Helen's eruption in 1980 is a stark reminder of what the Cascadia volcanoes are capable of the blast reduced the mountain Summit by over 1,300 ft and Unleashed a lateral explosion that flattened forests killing 57 people and countless animal the eruption sent shock waves through the region both literally and figuratively ash clouds darkened Skies as far away as Oklahoma disrupting air traffic and agricultural production for months in the immediate aftermath entire ecosystems were destroyed and the nearby spirit Lake was permanently altered with its surface lifted 200 ft by the debris the economic cost was staggering reaching over $1 billion in Damages and cleanup efforts but here's the scary part Mount St Helens was a warning shot other volcanos in the region are potentially even more destructive Mount Rainer for instance poses a catastrophic threat to densely populated areas like Seattle and Tacoma standing at 14,411 FT rer Towers above the region and unlike St Helen's it is capped with massive glaciers these glaciers which store tremendous amounts of ice pose a unique Hazard an eruption could rapidly melt these glaciers triggering lahars fast moving rivers of mud Ash and debris that would race down valleys at speeds of up to 50 mph these lahars could obliterate entire towns and infrastructure following River channels and potentially reaching as far as Puget sound the risk is not hypothetical in the past Mount rineer has produced catastrophic lahars that have left lasting imprints on the landscape the osola mud flow which occurred around 5,600 years ago buried an area of 212 Square mil under thick deposits of mud and debris transforming the geography of what is now the Seattle Tacoma Metropolitan region if a similar event occurred today the human and an economic toll would be unimaginably greater tens of thousands of people live in areas that are mapped as potential lar Pathways and many of these communities might have only minutes to evacuate in the event of a sudden eruption despite the lessons of Mount St Helens public awareness and preparedness for volcanic hazards remain inconsistent many residents are unaware of the imminent dangers posed by these volcanoes infrastructure such as roads bridg and Utilities in these vulnerable areas are not always designed to withstand such extreme forces furthermore the rapid Urban growth around Seattle and Tacoma has increased the potential for a large scale disaster early Warning Systems have improved since 1980 but they are not foolproof scientists monitor seismic activity ground deformation and gas emissions to predict eruption yet volcanoes can still surprise us with sudden and violent changes why didn't we f heed St Helen's warning perhaps it's because the devastation was contained within a sparsely populated area the blast zone though catastrophic primarily affected Forest land and a few small communities however if Mount Rainer Mount Hood or another Cascade volcano erupts the stakes will be exponentially higher the dense population key economic hubs and critical infrastructure make the region particularly vulnerable preparation education and investment in mitigation efforts are are essential developing detailed evacuation plan enhancing early warning system and enforcing stricter building codes in high-risk areas could save countless lives the 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens was a wake-up call but it's a call we jav yet to fully answer the Cascadia volcanoes are still active and it's not a matter of if they will erupt again but when the time to prepare is now before another eruption reshapes the landscape and Society of the Pacific Northwest Mount rineer the sleeping giant of the Northwest Mount rineer stands at over 14,400 ft making it the tallest volcano in the Cascadia Arc its beauty is breathtaking but its threat is terrifying geologists have identified Mount rineer as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world not because of its likelihood to erupt but because of the sheer number of People In Harm's Way the Seattle Tacoma metropolitan area home to more than 4 million people lies within the potential Hazard Zone making the risk not just hypothetical but a real concern for emergency planners and residents alike the mountains icy slopes Harbor vast amounts of snow and ice with glaciers covering approximately 35 square miles in the event of an eruption this ice could melt almost instantly creating lahars devastating mud flows made of water Rock Ash and debris these lahars could travel at speeds of up to 50 mph obliterating everything in in their path unlike lava flows which tend to move slowly lahars are far more dangerous because of their speed unpredictability and Long Reach these deadly flows could reach populated areas within minutes giving little warning for evacuation cities like oring pyala SAR and parts of Tacoma are built on Ancient Lahar paths meaning they're essentially sitting ducks for future Devastation these regions have well-developed infrastructure schools and businesses all of which could be wiped out by a major Lahar event evacuation routes have been mapped out but during a real emergency gridlock and panic could hinder Swift departures some estimates suggest that residents in the most vulnerable areas would have less than 40 minutes to flee residents often overlook this danger distracted by the Mountain's Serene Beauty and the recreational opportunities it offers however as recent seismic activity and ground deformation have shown Mount rineer is restless minor earthquakes beneath the surface hint at the ongoing movement of magma and while these events don't always lead to eruptions they are reminders of the Mountain's volatility a major eruption here would make Mount St Helen's 1980 event look tame by comparison Mount rainer's larger size and more extensive glacial cover mean the potential for far greater Devastation imagine thousands of people caught in the path of a sudden Unstoppable torrent of mud Rock and debris entire communities could be buried under feet of wet cement like material and major highways Rail lines and utilities could be disrupted for weeks or months the economic Fallout would be severe impacting not just the local area but the entire Pacific Northwest awareness preparedness and emergency planning are essential for mitigating the risks associated with this sleeping giant while Mount rainer's Allure is undeniable its capacity for Destruction must not be ignored Mount Hood Oregon's looming threat Mount Hood standing majestically at 11,240 FT is Oregon's tallest peak but beneath its snow covered Summit lies a dangerous secret this volcano is active and recent Tremors suggest it's far from dormant historically Mount Hood has erupted every 500 to 1,000 years with the last major eruption occurring in the 1790s this eruption produced pyroclastic flows and sent lahars cascading down the Mountain's flanks altering nearby river valleys and leaving a lasting impact on the landscape but the clock is ticking increased seismic activity in 2024 has officials worried that the next eruption could be just around the corner hundreds of small earthquakes coupled with ground deformation and increased gas emissions have been closely monitored by scientists indicating mag magma movement beneath the surface an eruption of Mount Hood wouldn't just affect the immediate vicinity ashall could cover Portland contaminating Water Supplies clogging machinery and grounding flights even a modest Ash plume could paralyze Regional Transportation hubs impacting air and road travel for weeks or even months the economic impact could rival that of the 1980 Mount St Helen's eruption but with far more people affected given the proximity of urban areas and the growth of the region since that time and let's not forget the potential for lahars fast moving flows of mud debris and water which could devastate communities along the rivers flowing from the mountain these lahars could reach populated areas like the Hood River Valley posing a significant threat to lives infrastructure and agriculture local governments have emergency plans in place but the challenge of evacuating large populations quickly remains a concern if you live in Oregon Mount Hood isn't just a Scenic backdrop it's a ticking Time Bomb preparedness efforts including evacuation routes emergency kits and public education are more crucial than ever as scientists race to predict when the next eruption might occur a Cascade of consequences the chain reaction of eruptions one of the most terrifying scenarios officials are considering is the possibility of a chain rea re action if one volcano in the Cascadia Arc erupts it could destabilize neighboring volcanoes this isn't just speculation geological evidence suggests that volcanic activity often occurs in clusters historical data from other volcanic arcs such as the uan islands in Alaska and the Andes in South America shows that eruptions in close proximity can influence each other when tectonic stresses are released in one location it can alter the pressures in adjacent areas potentially hastening eruptions that might have otherwise been dormant for years or even decades imagine Mount St Helens erupting with its characteristic explosive force sending shock waves through the Earth's crust that trigger Tremors beneath mount rineer mount rineer with its extensive ice cap poses an additional Hazard an eruption could rapidly melt glaciers creating lahars fast moving volcanic mud flows that could devastate nearby communities like oring and Pua and as the pressure beneath Rainer builds it could erupt violently and that seismic activity could in turn destabilize Mount Hood in Oregon given Mount Hood's proximity to Portland a major metropolitan area the human and economic toll could be catastrophic this domino effect could result in a series of devastating eruptions that overwhelm emergency response systems and force Mass evacuation in the United States we often think of disasters in isolation a single earthquake a solitary volcanic eruption but the natural world doesn't play by those rules the Cascadia volcanoes are interconnected through the same subduction zone where the wand deuka plate pushes beneath the North American Plate this shared tectonic environment means that stress and pressure changes in one part of the system can have far-reaching impacts on other parts additionally volcanic systems share deep magma Reservoir and disturbances in these reservoirs can affect multiple volcanoes simultaneously the fates of these volcanoes may be linked in ways were only beginning to understand and a chain reaction could turn a single eruption into a regional disaster with widespread long-term consequences why are the Cascadia volcanoes becoming active now you might be wondering why now why are these volcanoes suddenly stirring after centuries of calm the answer lies in the complex dance of tectonic plates beneath the Pacific Northwest the Wanda fuka plate is being pushed under the North American Plate in a process called subduction this process generates immense heat and pressure melting Rock and forming magma over time this magma rises creating the potential for eruption in recent years scientists have recorded an increase in slow slip events movements of the tectonic plates that don't cause immediate earthquakes but build up pressure over time these slow slip events are like a ticking clock winding Tighter and Tighter until something snaps when that happens the magma could erupt explosively the aftermath what happens after a major eruption if a major Cascadia volcano erupts the aftermath could be devastating and long lasting ashall would blanket vast regions choking crops contaminating water supplies and disrupting Transportation inhaling volcanic ash can cause serious respiratory problems and cleanup efforts could take months or even years infrastructure damage would be immense roads Bridges and power lines could be destroyed by lahars and earthquakes entire communities might need to be evacuated and potentially relocated the economic impact could be catastrophic with billions of dollars in Damages and a lengthy recovery process air travel would grind to a halt just like the 2010 eruption of a of yala Yoko in Iceland disrupted flights across Europe a major Cascadia eruption could disrupt flights across North America this would have a ripple effect on global Commerce and travel moreover the psychological impact on residents would be profound the trauma of losing home communities and livelihoods would linger long after the physical damage has been repaired are we ready preparing for the unthinkable given the stakes preparation is crucial crucial Emergency Management agencies are working to improve evacuation plans communication systems and public awareness but are we truly ready for the scale of Devastation a Cascadia eruption could bring residents are encouraged to have emergency kits evacuation plans and an understanding of their region specific risks schools hospitals and businesses need to be prepared for the possibility of extended disruptions however the reality is that no amount of preparation can fully mitigate the damage the best we can do is be aware stay informed and act quickly when the warning signs appear the Cascadia volcanoes are waking up and the clock is ticking are we ready for the devastation they could unleash the answer depends on awareness preparation and action what do
