What's cracking everybody, it's Scuba Steve here with Kraken Aquatics.
Today we're going to be talking about the top reasons for a leaking dive mask and how
to fix it.
Stay tuned.
One of the most frustrating things is being under the water during a dive, whether you're
scuba diving, free diving, snorkeling, and then you start noticing constant water coming
through your mask.
Well, today we have four things we're going to look at that could be causing your dive
mask to leak.
Number one, watch for obstructions.
Make sure that the seal isn't being blocked by anything, just to make sure it's got an
airtight seal around the face.
So you want to make sure the skirt has no obstructions.
Make sure it's flat completely around the face and guys, watch out for that pesky mustache
area.
You're going to want to put Vaseline or a clear chapstick that could just kind of lay
your hair down and help the skirt to lay on the hair.
Number two, don't over tighten your mask straps.
It's a mental thing, right?
When you're underwater, you get water start coming through your dive mask, you can get
up and the first thing you do is you want to wrench on your mask straps because you
think if I tighten it more, it will suction it more to your face.
Actually, what this does is it causes the mask to have an improper seal.
You want it to be comfortably tight before you even descend into the water.
If you over tighten it, all of that pressure will actually push against your mask and it
will lift up tiny areas around the skirt, leaving you with little areas so the water
can infiltrate your mask.
Reason number three, breathing through your nose.
A lot of people, when they get in the water, they may not be trained properly on how to
inhale and exhale through your snorkel or through your regulators.
So that's one thing that you want to be aware of is when you're underwater, especially if
you're free diving or snorkeling, you're going to want to get into a habit of inhaling and
exhaling through the mouth, through the snorkel or scuba diving through your regulator.
The reason is if you're trying to breathe out through your nose, that's actually pushing
the mask away from your face.
So you're going to have that pressure to where you do and automatically parts of your skirt
will detach from your face, giving allowance for water to creep into your mask.
And number four, does your dive mask fit properly?
We've covered it in a previous video, which I will link in the description below on how
to choose the correct dive mask for you.
You want to make sure that you have a dive mask that's not just comfortable, but that
seals properly around your face.
Look, everybody's face is unique in their own way.
So you want to make sure that it fits you properly.
If it doesn't fit you specifically the way you need it to, that could pose problems for
you underwater, not only with comfortability, visibility, but water coming in from the skirt
because it didn't seal around your face the way it should.
So a quick recap, one, watch for obstructions, two, don't over tighten the dive mask straps.
Number three, try not to exhale through your nose and four, does your mask fit properly?
Hopefully, if you're experiencing a leaking dive mask, one of these solutions will remedy
your issue.
