At the end of the year, Hanoi turned into a battlefield of people and cars.
Everyone was down and out.
No one tolerated anyone.
At the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025,
Hanoi also closed the road like a scene of a motorbike climbing the sidewalk.
You can imagine, just standing at Nguyen Trai Quoc Duy Tien intersection
or any intersection at rush hour,
people will see a sea of cars, from luxury cars to motorbikes,
all with the same goal.
Let's get out of this crowd and go home right away.
But few people can achieve this goal.
Hanoi has become a battlefield of people and cars.
And this story is not new at all.
At the end of the year,
at the end of the lunar calendar,
everyone was down and out like a race with time.
And along with the roadblock, it was air pollution.
Why does Hanoi have roadblocks and air pollution at the end of the year?
Let's imagine this.
Hanoi has more than 8.5 million people and more than 7 million motorbikes.
Not to mention about 1.3 million cars.
All of them were blown out of the road at the same time.
You can imagine, in terms of area, Hanoi seems to be large.
But most of the traffic is inside the city.
So closing the road is almost essential in the end of the year.
Everyone needs to move.
According to some estimates,
more than 85% of Hanoians use motorbikes or private cars to travel every day.
In short, they use their own vehicles, not public vehicles.
And this makes traffic overload.
Meanwhile, public vehicles such as buses or trains
can only meet the remaining needs.
And not all trains are completed.
Every year, Hanoi increases 390,000 vehicles.
So every month, it increases more than 32,000 vehicles.
Every day, it increases more than 1,100 different vehicles.
And the number of vehicles blown out of the road.
And if everyone owns a vehicle,
whether it's a motorbike, a car, or even a bicycle,
they have to go out twice a day.
Once to work, once to the office,
and once from the office to home.
Not to mention going to the market, picking up children, etc.
With the amount of vehicles and the situation of traffic congestion,
the vehicles that blow out of the road also emit a large amount of pollutants.
And sometimes, in the case of a red light,
it's no different than a car crash on the road.
Closing the road is not someone's business.
Everyone wants to avoid closing the road.
Because closing the road will prevent Hanoi from being damaged
by more than 23,000 to almost 28,000 billion VND per year.
This is a huge number.
It is equivalent to 1 to 1.2 billion USD per year.
With an average salary in Vietnam of about 8 million VND per month,
a worker will need to work for about 244,000 years without rest
to earn 1 billion USD.
And if there are 1,000 people working together,
it will take 244 years to reach this number.
So how big is the economic damage?
Or some other comparisons,
such as the Cat Linh-Ha Dong urban railway,
which has a total investment of about 18,000 billion VND.
And this number corresponds to about 764 million USD.
So Hanoi's traffic damage per year is more than 1 billion USD.
It can completely build Cat Linh-Ha Dong railway
and build more than half of an equivalent railway.
A report in 2023 also showed that
Hanoi's average people spend about 1.5 hours a day on the road.
According to us, it will take up to 22 days a year
just to stand by the roadside.
But why does Hanoi have such a terrible road closure at the end of the year?
The first reason is the need to buy and travel higher.
Everyone wants to prepare for Tet.
People cover their feet in the market.
People fall into the big shopping malls over there.
Vincom, Yomo, etc.
Ah, the streets are also getting crowded.
At the end of the year, Vietnamese people's demand for shopping
sometimes becomes unbearably high.
People have money.
People want to save everything for Tet until the end of the year.
At the end of the year,
traffic will increase by at least 20-30% compared to normal days.
Especially in big cities,
such as Nguyen Trai, Lang, or Quoc Duy Tien.
There are days when the road is less than 2 km,
but people have to spend up to 30 minutes to move.
And those who sit in the car only know how to cry.
In addition, the end of the year is also the peak time of all activities.
Students and students prepare for the exam period.
Parents are in a hurry to pick up their children.
Workers are in a hurry to complete deadlines and work at the end of the year.
While companies are busy organizing Tet parties.
And sometimes workers organize their own parties.
That's not to mention the large number of people returning home for Tet.
Making bus stops such as My Dinh bus stop,
Zabat bus stop, or bus stops always crowded.
I remember in 2022,
only on the occasion of Tet,
Hanoi recorded nearly 2 million people leaving the city.
People are increasing, cars are increasing,
while the roads are not doing too much.
Although Hanoi's transportation infrastructure has been improved over the years,
there are still too many limitations.
So everywhere you look, you can see traffic jams.
Everywhere you look, you can see tight roads.
And everywhere you look, you can see small roads.
The narrow roads are often jammed at rush hour.
Only in 2023,
according to the latest statistics,
Hanoi has more than 90 large and small transportation projects under construction,
causing the least traffic jams at 15 hot spots.
The awareness of participation in transportation is also a big part of the story.
People are in a hurry, so they are ready to make a big deal,
break the red light,
or stop parking.
Although at the end of 2024,
at the beginning of 2025,
this has also decreased a lot.
Perhaps you have ever seen people riding motorbikes on the sidewalks,
or even crossing narrow alleys to avoid traffic jams.
According to a survey,
about 60% of traffic participants admitted that
they broke the law when the roads were too jammed.
The law here is known to break the red light,
go the other way,
or go to the sidewalk.
And another thing that makes the situation more serious is the weather.
At the end of the year, Hanoi is often cold.
Many days, the rain falls for a long time.
So people are afraid to walk,
or use public transportation.
Instead, they just take the car out and go for convenience.
Especially those who have cars,
they take the car out for convenience.
This leads to a more serious road closure.
Especially when it rains heavily and the time is short,
many highways quickly turn into small rivers,
making it more difficult for vehicles to move.
On the government side,
the explanation of the cause leads to a road closure in Hanoi.
The Hanoi Department of Transportation pointed out many reasons.
Among them, the infrastructure of the transportation system
has not been fully invested as planned.
The network of the transportation lines of the infrastructure system
has not yet been formed as planned.
As for the specific cause for the closure of the transportation lines,
the Department of Transportation stated that
due to the lack of services,
construction works,
and the slow deployment of the infrastructure projects
as planned,
and overloading of the infrastructure.
In general, those are the reasons you can hear every year.
So, at the end of the year,
Hanoi is like a chaotic picture of the human race
and the traffic on each square meter.
Fortunately, there is no traffic jam here.
Even if it is difficult,
it is still the characteristic life of this city.
Hanoi people often joke that
the road closure is a cultural aspect of the capital.
Although the saying sounds boring,
it reflects a reality that
traffic here is still a long calculation
that cannot be solved in one morning and one afternoon.
One morning, the road is closed,
and one afternoon, the road is closed.
Not only the road closure,
Hanoi's air quality is also very polluted
in the last days of the year.
Air quality pollution is often recorded
in the time before and after the cold air comes back,
and often increases rapidly at night and early in the morning,
and the cold air comes back at the end of the year.
The reason is that in the winter in the North,
unfavorable weather conditions,
such as low rainfall, cold weather,
and heat,
so dust cannot spread,
causing pollution to the air quality of the area.
In contrast, in the summer,
for example, high winds, heavy rain,
or the phenomenon of strong air flow,
pollute and spread dust in the air,
so the summer is often less polluted than the winter,
although the summer is also very uncomfortable.
The nature and environment of Hanoi is reasonable.
There are many factors that affect
the quality of the air in Hanoi.
In particular, Hanoi currently has more than 40% of urban population,
has 17 industrial areas, about 1,300 villages,
and has millions of vehicles of all kinds as mentioned.
Every day, vehicles in Hanoi are estimated to emit
about 700 to 800 tons of CO2,
turning the capital into one of the most polluted cities
in Southeast Asia,
and the most polluted in Asia,
and even the most polluted in the world.
Research by the University of Hanoi
Environmental Science and Technology shows
that the emission of gasoline and diesel from vehicles
adds up to 46% of super-smooth dust
and aerosol compounds from motorcycles,
which accounts for more than 90% of the total emission from traffic.
Motorcycles are the largest source of emission,
followed by heavy trucks,
buses and light trucks.
And the most emitted vehicles are many more.
The second most emitted is each industrial production activity.
Hanoi has industrial areas,
in addition to about 1,300 villages
with industrial production facilities
in neighboring provinces and cities,
which are only about 50 to 100 km from the center of Hanoi,
such as power plants in Hai Duong,
cement factories in Hoa Binh,
Ninh Binh, Ha Nam,
fertilizers and chemicals in Thai Nguyen or Phu Tho.
And the third source of air pollution in Hanoi
is the burning of agricultural products.
It accounts for about 13% of this pollution.
The most serious period of air pollution
is also during the harvest of two main rice crops,
summer harvest and spring harvest.
In places such as foreign countries,
the US, Germany, and the United States,
people still keep the habit of burning rice crops right in the fields.
And it's the same in the city,
nothing different at all.
In addition, resources such as construction,
garbage burning, health care,
and other public activities also contribute
about 10% to the state of air pollution in Hanoi.
Along with that is the weather issue.
As mentioned, from October last year to April next year,
the climate in Hanoi has a cold war at night
about temperature, humidity,
wind speed, very high heat dissipation,
which limits the ability to disperse pollutants,
especially PM10 dust and PM2.5 dust.
Thank you for watching this story.
The story of why Hanoi is polluted at the end of the year,
why Hanoi closes its roads at the end of the year.
I wish you good luck and good health on the road.
