So in today's video we're going to be looking into the cost of raising chicken in 2023.
So our first cost is going to be day-old chicks. A farmer pays an average of 1,100 per box of 100
chicks. The second cost is going to be the chicken feed. We have three types of feed. We have starter,
grower, and finisher. So I'm gonna break it down to a scale of raising 100 chicks.
How many bags of feed we're gonna need is seven. The first feed that you're gonna buy is a starter
which means you're gonna give your chicken starter from day one until day 14.
Because I said I'm gonna scale it down to 100 chicks that we're gonna be raising,
so one bag is required for 100 chicks. One bag of starter. It simply cost me 476 rand
to buy a bag of starter. And mind you that I'm gonna give starter from day one until day 14.
So now we switch to grower. Remember that our grower is pilot and our starter is cramp. So now
our chicken will eat grower for the next 14 days from day 14 until day 28. I buy one bag of grower
for 449 rand each bag. And here we're gonna be buying three bags which means that the cost is
1347 rand. That's the total cost for our grower. Three bags of grower. So 100 chicks require three
bags of grower in two weeks. So after 28 days we give them finisher as it is our final stage
of feeding. Now they're ready for the market to be sold. So one bag of finisher I buy it for
436 rand. Remember that I'm gonna buy three bags of finisher as well because at the end we need to
total cost for our finisher to be 1308 rand. That's the total cost for finisher.
So we are done with chicks and feed. So another cost that we need to calculate it's
wood shaving. So for our bedding some they call it sawdust. So I buy my bag of wood shaving for
30 rand. So for 100 chicks you're required to buy five which means that it's gonna be 150 rand.
Another thing that you need to buy it's a stress peg. Some people always ask what's the yellow
thing inside the water. That's a stress peg. So you give your chicken stress peg first day when
they arrive in the house for three days. So from day one, day two and day three your chicken need
to drink stress peg to relax them. So a bag or a packet of stress peg costs only 50 rand.
So now that we are ready for the market let's calculate the cost of production for 100 chicks.
Now we have added everything and we came to the total cost of 3954 rand. That's our total cost
to raise 100 chicks from day one until day 42 which is six weeks. Remember this cost doesn't
include vaccination, doesn't include antibiotics, it's only feed and the old chicks. Our bedding
which we use sawdust and also include our stress peg. So that's our that's how I farm actually
and then other things we didn't include because I don't use them.
So guys thank you and stay tuned. Tomorrow we'll be talking about the calculation of profit that we make.
