Hi, my name is Adam Havirola and welcome to January.
It's the very first episode this year of Home Botanica.
We're creating this gorgeous design
highlighting a piece I found in their house.
Now that we have found our pieces
that we're gonna use to make this gorgeous floral design,
we can get started.
I did find this white baking dish in the kitchen
and I already put the foam in there.
And just so you know, if you haven't seen a video with foam,
you can get floral foam that's either green or black.
You can get it at the floral department
or online or at a craft store.
But the key is fill up a basin of water,
let it just float down.
Don't pour water over the top.
Don't push it into water.
Let it just float down so it completely saturates.
And this is what's gonna keep our flowers alive.
We have our statue.
And I wanna talk a little bit why this drew me to it.
We are in January.
I think that we need to spend a lot of time this year
listening to people and not over-talking people.
And this is just my reminder of creating a floral tribute
to listen to the people around you before you talk
because amazing things will happen then.
So that is my little thing.
And I love him, he's cute.
And then I found some foil.
We never want to put this art
or any kind of sculpture you may have
or anything that you can want to put on the wet foam.
We don't want the base to touch that
because we don't want to damage it.
So I am just going to wrap it in foil.
The flowers will cover this.
So just wrap this in foil
so that way we know this is extremely protected
and we're just gonna set it right there.
All right, let's get started.
We're gonna start with our pittosporum
and I'm gonna cut it into pieces.
Probably get three pieces out of this.
We're just gonna go in
and make a wreath around our design with the pittosporum.
Just extend the container,
push it right into the foam,
right into the floral foam.
And we're gonna extend the container out.
So we have some more.
And because we're placing this on a coffee table,
we really want to make sure
you can see flowers all around it
because people are gonna be walking around it
or sitting around it.
So we want to make sure we have flowers everywhere.
We have one more piece of the pittosporum.
We're just gonna keep putting this in.
It's a pretty little foliage wreath.
Do you see how much bigger
that automatically makes that arrangement
is just by adding that.
Next, we have our ruscus.
Lots of foliages in January.
Lots of growth.
Did you know that the color green
represents growth, new beginnings, enrichment?
So we're gonna have a lot of green in here.
So this I'm just gonna put,
and I'm pushing it at an angle towards the statue
so that way when we move it,
the statue won't rock.
We're just gonna cut these into little pieces like this.
Go ahead and cut the other one while we're at it.
We're just gonna fill in.
We don't have to cover all of the foam,
but we do want to give a nice base for the flowers.
And when I'm putting these in,
I'm making sure to put them at an angle
to cover some of that tinfoil that we have on there.
If you didn't want to use tinfoil,
you could use Saran Wrap.
The problem I have with Saran Wrap,
sometimes it rips around something sharp,
so it made me nervous about damaging their statue.
All right, let's put our big focal flowers
on these gorgeous cremones.
Cut it to about there.
We're gonna put them right into the foam,
making sure we go deep into the foam
so they have plenty to drink.
All right, now that we have our cremones in,
let's do our geberas.
You know what?
No, let's do our roses.
Look at these orange, gorgeous roses.
I think being in January, we want to see some color.
We want to see some beautiful colors,
and that's why this orange, yellow,
lavender, and white design is perfect.
When we have a lot of the flowers that are in threes,
you'll notice that we have a triangle.
So we have rose, rose, rose triangle,
then the cremones triangle.
That just keeps to make sure that everything is balanced
and everything is evenly distributed.
And now we're gonna mix up that triangle
with our gerber daisies.
When you get the gerbs,
go ahead and take the plastic straws off.
We do not need them.
I'm gonna put one coming up off the side
and another one on the other side.
So that way, again, while we're sitting,
they can see this beautiful color throughout.
All right, I think it's looking good.
Now we have our white cushion.
Let's go ahead and pop the laterals off.
Let's pop these flowers off, make a little pile.
Do it to all of them.
These are gonna be where we're gonna fill in with.
We're gonna take this and fill it in.
And ironically, the white of this connects this white,
the white in the flowers, the white to the base.
All kind of just works together.
And then what we're gonna do
is I always like to take two or three,
cut them together and insert them into the foam together.
And we're gonna take these
and we're gonna put these all around the design,
just covering up the foam that's still there,
putting it in between the other flowers,
making sure that we're getting it deep into the foam.
The reason you want it deep into the foam
is the foam dries out from the top down.
And if you just barely put these on the foam,
the foam will be dried
and then the flowers won't last as long.
So that way, if you go as deep as you can,
there's always gonna be plenty of nutrients
and water in the base
because you're certainly gonna fill
this white container with water.
I know that.
If you're new to us
and you don't know what I'm talking about
when I say add the nutrients,
when you have that little packet of food,
get a pitcher, pour water in it,
pour the packet in it, stir it up,
and then pour that into this.
Don't just sprinkle the water on top of the foam.
That's not gonna work.
You're gonna really want to make sure
it's dissolved in water before you put it in.
I think it's looking beautiful.
Imagine if you had this at a wedding shower
with their monogram on here
or a baby shower with some sort of baby moment.
This is just another tool to take,
create your own designs,
have a focal art piece, flower ring,
and then a base that matches.
Now we have our gorgeous matricaria.
Again, we're gonna pull these off.
I really do enjoy spending this time with you
and showing you all of what one simple bouquet can create
in your floral world.
And these, we're just gonna dance
a little bit above the other flowers.
Oops, I broke that one.
That's okay.
It's okay to break them.
And what I'm doing is I'm making sure
that the yellow is separated from the gerbs.
We want to make sure that this beautiful,
bright yellow sunshine is spread
throughout the whole design.
And we're gonna do the same thing with the other stem,
just making sure that we break it into little pieces
that we can put in.
What do you think?
Simple.
Keepsake or whatever, you can even put a candle here,
whatever you want in the center.
Create a beautiful flower ring,
have a base that coordinates,
and we are ready to go place it.
Thank you so much for spending time with me.
It is the very first month of January.
I want to wish you an extremely happy new year,
and we will see you in February.
