How does the KTM 1190 ADVENTURE compare versus budget rivals in the Kawasaki KLR 650, Suzuki VStrom, and the class rival BMW R1200 GS? We give our first impressions with a candid, unbiased review, drag race, and mini adventure complete with highway, dirt, whoops, jumps, and general overland shenanigans :) We answer the question, is it REALLY worth the money to get this over the KLR or other Japanese budget adventurers? Ferris Bueller perfectly sums it up...
Hey what's up ladies and gentle-tubers, it's Eberrai. Welcome to the Badlands. Today we
get Goat Kevesa's brand new KTM 1190 Adventure nice and dirty. We'll follow it with the drone,
give you our first impressions, and drag race it against the DRZ400 Black Widow. You're not
gonna want to miss it, so stick around. Many adventure motorcycles out there claim to do
everything, but nothing particularly well. With the 1190 Adventure, KTM decided to take that
mantra and turn it on its head. Like the 990 before it, the front looks like some kind of futuristic
alien. The rear though looks more like something you'd see on a beach in Brazil. And forget the
dust or the roost, I could stare at it for hours. And with how the thing handles, that's the view I
and everybody else will be getting used to. At 470 pounds dry, it might weigh a bit more than
other off-road machines, but it's got 150 horses. That's in the range of a Yamaha RR1, and a top speed of over 150 miles per hour. But this isn't a purpose-built track bike.
It's in the adventure touring class. Scratch that. With a top speed more than 30 miles per hour, 25 more metric cubes, and nearly 40 more horses than the R1200GS, it's pretty much in the class of its own.
But as an adventure bike, one that can do everything, how does it fare when things get dirty? A fully adjustable electronic suspension and low center of gravity makes it feel lighter and more agile than bikes half its displacement in the dirt.
With hours on tap at seemingly any speed, and whether you're cruising the highway, fire roads, or whoops the size of VW Beetles, it feels absolutely planted.
And while the relatively low seat height of 35 inches makes it accessible for more riders, the price? Well, not so much.
I've said it before that for the price of a bike like this, you can get several cheaper bikes that do nothing particularly well for you and all of your friends with money to spare.
But if you happen to have a bit more to spare, and want a bike that does everything particularly well, this is it for you.
Just promise us that if you get one, we'll put on the knobby shoes and never let it within 10 miles of a Starbucks.
Let's do this correctly.
Gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah!
Aw yeah.
Cause you know what? It's not really freaking stupid. It's Gah-gah-gah!
It's Gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah!
Alright, well hey, let me show you this track.
You're going straight for it.
I'm not gonna go too crazy, though.
So Brent, aka Go Kabasi, you guys know Brent.
He's used to a KLR650 and recently an Aprilia Pegaso Cube.
And now he's on probably the king of large adventure motorcycles.
The KTM 1190 Adventure.
I'm gonna take it kinda easy just cause I'm trying to get a feel for it on this bike, but...
Yeah, this being your first time off-road, what are your initial impressions?
Oh, you know, it just handles great.
It's just, you know, it's not...
It feels like, well, you can tell that the CG is lower than the KLR.
Yeah.
And so it doesn't feel any heavier at all than the KLR, maybe even a little lighter.
Wow.
See, that's saying something.
So yeah, what I mentioned earlier was it's basically, you know, an R1200GS power-wise,
with KTM suspension and the weight of a KLR.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, man, this is feeling good.
It feels good.
Ha, ha, ha, yeah.
Oh, that's kind of a...
There you go.
Are you bottoming out at all?
No.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
This is KTM power.
You know, before today we actually...
Well, before you bought that bike, really.
Yeah.
We would always talk crap about KTMs, right?
Right.
And realistically, the only people who talk crap about KTMs are people who can't afford KTMs.
Ha, ha, ha.
I'm pretty sure that the owners are pretty satisfied with them.
And the only gripe that anybody can ever find about them is,
maintenance, maintenance, but really it's like if you have a Ferrari,
you're going to have maintenance with higher performance, right?
Yeah.
There's more maintenance on a DRZ400E than there is on an S,
because it's higher performance.
So obviously, you know, higher performance, you got to take care of the babies.
Right.
You know, I was wondering about performance as well, or maintenance.
Yeah.
And I was flying with a guy.
He has KTMs, he has a 530XC.
Anyway, he was just telling me how reliable it is.
You know, no crazy maintenance or anything besides just the regular, you know, keeping up.
That is awesome.
Well, tell me a little bit about it.
Like, so first of all, you know, because you know my channel.
Ha, ha, ha.
It's all about us cheap ****s that can't afford anything.
Ha, ha, ha.
Yeah, T-cam.
But, so how much did that bad boy cost?
Well, I told my wife.
Ha, ha, ha.
Continue.
Where do I go from there?
Ha, ha, ha.
Alright, so what did you tell your wife?
Well, you know, you had to hunt stuff, and you know, eventually it comes up.
Ha, ha, ha.
No, I gotta, I gotta.
Well, where did that end?
Yeah.
I mean, I've wanted one for a long time, and I ended up getting a KLR just because I was doing the math.
And I'm like, you know, I could buy so many KLRs for, you know, the price of that, and still have money left over.
But the old, here's the thing, though, about the KLR, I love the KLR, everybody knows that.
Oh, it's a great bike, yeah.
But the old adage is very true.
It does everything, but not.
Exactly, yeah.
Now, that motorcycle will do everything, and it will do it a lot better.
Wanna go this way?
Yeah.
I mean, that's what Mr. Duffactor was saying, is the KCMs might be a little more, but they do things way better.
Yeah, exactly.
You know, the KLR, I loved it, but I kind of felt trapped in a certain area.
Mm-hmm.
Because, as you know, the freeways around here, even the highways, you know, speed limit's 70 miles an hour, traffic flow is at 80.
So I felt unsafe every time I got out on the highway on the KLR, just because you could keep up with traffic, but you're always maxed out.
So you never had the option to power out of a bad situation.
Yep.
And, you know, there's the oil issue that you experienced going up to the northwest.
You know, and just a lot of issues with the KLR on the highway.
You know, I looked at where I wanted to ride, and there's just a lot of areas where I wanted to go, but I wanted to ride without, you know, the KLR stress, you know.
Yes.
Trying to deal with traffic, deal with just the sound of the motor, you know, nothing else.
Right, yeah.
But, yeah, this performs so much better than the KLR on the road, and off-road, really.
It feels smooth, it's just nice to have horsepower, I guess.
Right.
Well, interesting thing is the lower center of gravity, and especially the suspension, you know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
The suspension's one of those things where you're just kind of like, okay, this is my bike's suspension, and that's how it rolls.
But once the suspension is tuned, it's like night and day.
You feel a lot more in control, you feel a lot safer.
Right.
Like, you're actually going a lot faster right now than you used to go on the KLR.
Oh, right.
And this is your first time off-road on that thing, so.
Yeah, and it feels comfortable.
Yeah.
It just felt too smooth, it was too quiet.
You know, on the KLR, you know, the engine noise, the whining, the wind noise.
Right.
So I think we can come to the consensus that it's kind of like that quote from Ferris Bueller, if you have the means, I highly suggest it.
It is so choice.
It's so choice.
If you don't have the means, then KLR is great.
The KLR is an awesome bike, you know, and I was thinking about the KLR this morning, and I just put it up for sale.
Oh.
And it's going to be sad to see it go, because it's been such a great bike.
I do want another light bike to go on trails and things, and I'm trying to decide.
I mean, the 450, I could get in trouble with that.
It's probably too much for my skill level, but the 250 I think was, it was fun.
That's kind of why I love the DRZ is, at the place that I'm at right now with riding ability, I think the power on the DRZ is great.
And I don't know, we need to do another drag race.
We should do a drag race.
I have a bad feeling about it.
Ready?
All right.
Three.
I got to get humpy here.
Oh, okay.
All right.
Three.
Two.
Wait, are we going on one, or are we going on go?
We're going go.
Three, two, one, go.
Okay, all right.
Ready?
Okay.
Three, two, one, go.
I'm in second gear.
Powerless.
Needless to say.
It's like having three times the displacement.
Okay.
I'll put it.
All right, so Go Kabesa has perhaps unwisely.
Let's see if you're on it.
No, you're on it.
All right.
Not freaking stupid.
It's awesome.
He is unwisely letting me jump on the bike.
I'm not going to do anything crazy.
Of course.
Well, if you fell, your backpack would break your fall.
Well, yeah.
You'd be out a lot, and I'd be out a lot.
Right, right.
Oh, geez.
I just about tipped it over right there.
Just kidding, Brent.
I'm good at this.
Of course you are.
Okay, here we go.
Okay, I want you to see how much my hand is moving here.
Oh, geez.
Yeah, there.
It's nothing.
Oh, Brent, it's not a good idea for you to let me ride this.
It's like the KLR, isn't it?
It's just like the KLR, except for like.
Except for everything.
Oh, geez.
All right, I'm going to give it a little throttle.
Is that okay?
Yeah.
We're just going to see it take off here.
All right, you ready?
Brent, this is an awesome motorcycle, dude.
It is.
I've seen people go like 220.
I don't know.
I'm not very good with math, metrics.
We had a big discussion about that one trick system.
I don't know if it ever ended up on tape.
Yeah, I don't think.
Did I say tape?
You said on tape?
Yeah, the VHS.
That's what I was about to use on the VHS.
Remember how sore our necks would be when we strapped the big old, you know, Toshiba camcorder?
Good purchase.
You ran out of tape?
Oh, man, we'll have to put another tape in there.
Well, I'll end it with a little of this and a little of this.
Thanks for watching, everybody.
This thing is a beast.
If you have the means, once again, it is a choice.
See you guys later.
