Why Blood Pressure Readings Can Be Wrong!
hello you can see I'm wearing a blood
pressure monitor that's because somebody
recently commented out I've made a
slight error with regard to one of the
videos with regard to blood pressure
it's very important where we position
the arm with regard to blood pressure
taking and we're going to try and
highlight that now if the arm is hanging
down and the patient just sitting
upright unsupported you're going to get
a falsely elevated blood pressure and
conversely we should have the arm raised
to the level of the heart and the
patient relaxed that will give us our
true blood pressure but to push that
concept even further if you elevate the
arm up then you're going to get a
falsely low blood pressure so let's see
those in action now so this blood
pressure because my arm is down is going
to be slightly
elevated okay so that's giving me a
blood pressure of 129 over 91 now we're
going to make that blood pressure number
come down by having me relaxed support
backwards and raising the arm up and to
really double down on that you shouldn't
speak when you're having the blood
pressure done because that can falsely
raise the blood pressure because of how
you're breathing in and out and
affecting the air in the diaphragm I'm
doing that now to demonstrate how
significant the positioning of the arm
is with regard to blood pressure because
I know that the blood pressure is going
to be lower even though I'm talking even
though I'm doing the wrong things here
blood pressure is coming
down okay and there we go so we've got a
blood pressure of 102 over 58 just from
the positioning of the arm so there you
have it done on camera the position of
the arm matters to where you're doing
the blood pressure try to have your arm
elevated to the level of the heart and
the patient relaxed lying back that's
going to give you your true blood
pressure reading hopefully that clears
things up
