On this episode of HEY DT: 0:00 Intro 0:20 Why don't you use vanilla Arch? 7:10 Is there a place where I can see a list of all your videos? 8:26 Were you recently interviewed and where can we watch it? 9:53 How has Syncthing been treating you? Do you still use it? 11:21 I know you’re still using xmonad primarily and...I noticed that your Xmonad config could use a polish. 13:45 When you start talking, I always know you're going to take a long time... You really like taking your time, don't you? 14:00 I was looking for ways to securing appimages running on my Arch system with permission management like flatpaks. 15:36 Where are your videos on odysee? This video isn't there atm. Please see message and upload to odysee. Thank you. 17:26 You say you don't care about all the drama in the FOSS community, but I think you should start speaking out on it. This seems to be a growing problem. 21:28 Thanks to Patrons
Your support is very much appreciated. Thanks, guys!
welcome to another edition of HDT hadt
is a series of videos I do where I
respond to viewer questions and comments
these viewer questions and comments they
typically come from the comments on the
videos posted on YouTube and odyssey
sometimes these questions and comments
come through social media such as Reddit
or Mastadon sometimes these questions
and comments come through email and the
very first question I want to respond to
is a question I get all the time I've
responded to it before but I wanted to
address it in a little bit of a deeper
sort of way today and that question is
hey DT why don't you use vanilla Arch so
first let me directly answer the
question and then I'm going to dive a
little deeper about why I think some of
the people asking this question have
some character flaws let's just say that
but first why don't I use vanilla Arch
and the reason I don't use vanilla Arch
is because I installed Arco Linux and
Arch based distribution and it's running
on my machine and it works right I don't
typically drro hop when things are
working you know I don't just go and
create a lot of headache for myself
several hours of work to hop to another
Linux drro or another operating system
of any kind if what I'm using is working
there's no reason for me to do that
right uh time is precious to me and I
don't want to waste it I don't you know
this is not something especially these
days used to I would hop sometimes just
for fun but these days I've used
practically every Linux distribution
known to man drro hopping is no longer
new exciting fun right it's actually
work to me now so typically when things
are working and things are working with
my workstation here at the office this
workstation runs Arco Linux my home
computer also runs Arco Linux both of
them have had Arco Linux installed on
them for a number of years now the same
installation up and running for a number
of years and if it's working why mess
with it now let me address why I think a
lot of people ask me this question a lot
of people really care about what other
people think about them for example a
lot of people want to run vanilla Arch
because the community in some circles
you know sometimes the community thinks
vanilla Arch is a hard Linux
distribution it's hard to install right
and it's kind of like hey if you're
running vanilla Arch you must be like an
a Elite Linux user right if you're using
something like mangaro or Arco or zero
Linux or some you know Endeavor OS
you're not a real Arch user you didn't
install it the archway maybe you don't
even have the skills to install it the
archway because you're a peasant right
you're a noob and while I think the
people that are out there you know
spreading all of that misinformation all
those lies I think those people have
issues I also think the people that are
asking this question why don't you use
vanilla Arch I think they've bought into
the too and you know they have
some issues because they somehow hear
this message of hey if you run a arch
base drro like mangaro or Arco or
whatever it happens to be you know
you're somehow a Linux Noob right you're
you're not Elite right and why do you
care and I'm being honest and this is
with all things in life whatever it is
you're doing whatever activities you
partake in whatever things you buy
whatever products or Services you find
useful and use why do you care what
other people say to you or how they
judge you on any of that stuff why does
it matter to you what other people think
for me personally I am way past the
point of caring about other people's
opinion about me right and this is with
all aspects of life but in particular
the the software I run or the Linux
distribution that I use I don't care
right I care about what I think about it
anybody else's opinion is completely
irrelevant like it has absolutely no
bearing on anything I I would have to
have some serious mental issues if I
heard what other people's opinion about
my software was and I changed my
software because they think that's what
I need to run right I would have I I I
would need to go get some like
psychiatric help and this is not
something that's new to me now you know
as somebody that's you know in my late
40s or whatever I kind of understood
this when I was a teenager even I
remember in high school you know I was
that high school kid that really didn't
care about fitting in with any crowd I
just did my own thing if people thought
it was cool fine if they didn't think it
was cool that was fine too I didn't care
and I always viewed the kids that did
care as a little weird and it's
different when you're a teen teager most
teenagers do buy into this BS where you
know they have to follow the latest
fashion trends or you know whatever the
latest cool thing to do is they all have
to be doing it I had this friend of mine
that I remember he changed all the time
to fit with whatever the latest Trend
was I remember his fashion you know one
month he would be dressing in a grunge
style because that was the cool thing to
do it was that Grunge look the next
thing you know he's looking like a
prepper right he had that prep look you
know sometimes he would try to fit in
with like The Outsiders like the pothead
sometimes he tried to fit in with the
Nerds you know whatever it was that he
thought he needed to do at the time and
you know and and I never really knew
what this guy like his essential self I
didn't know the real person behind that
because it was all fake every time I saw
him it was fake but it was a different
fakeness cuz he was constantly changing
he always had to have the latest shoes
you know for example I remember in high
school you know some of the hot fashions
as far as shoes you know there for a
while everybody had to have Doc Martins
and as soon as you know you weren't cool
unless you had a pair of Doc Marts he
had to go buy one or you had to have a
jbo jeans he go buy some right and I was
like I always thought man that's stupid
you go and buy you know some clothes
that you may or may not even like you
know the looks of it but you feel like
you have to have that name brand because
somebody told you you're not cool unless
you go get that and even again as a
teenager most teenagers you know bought
into this and I just I I immediately
rejected all of that even back then I
was a non-conformist kind of like I am
now with free and open source software
right those of us that love free and
open source software we're a bit of
non-conformist yet when you get into the
community there is some Conformity
trying to be pushed on to people right
for example if you run a art based
distribution you know you're not cool
unless you actually run vanilla Arch no
I reject that message just like I
rejected the message that I had to wear
certain clothes when I was a kid moving
on to the next question hey DT is there
a place where I can see a list of all
your videos okay so I'm going to make an
assumption here because he wants a list
of all my videos I'm assuming he wants a
list of all the URLs of my videos and
typically somebody wanting a a complete
list of all 2,000 videos I've made what
are they likely trying to do well I
suspect he
wants possibly a local copy of them and
we'll just leave it at that so I don't
know of a way to go get a complete list
of my videos as far as like from my
YouTube dashboard I don't even think I
have a way to get that there may be a
way but it's probably hidden away in
some weird settings or something so uh
you know off the top of my head I don't
know how I would go about getting that
but I will say this if you're trying to
get that list of videos for what I think
you're trying to get it for there is a
certain command line Linux program that
is useful in getting that video and
storing it locally on your machine and
that particular program does have the
ability I believe to just go grab every
video from a certain Channel we're just
going to leave it at that and the next
question I think is in response to
on a video recently I mentioned uh
something about you know being
interviewed occasionally on other
channels or in online Publications and
things and he asks hey DT were you
recently interviewed where can I watch
it okay so uh the most recent interview
I did I actually posted in my like
Community tab on YouTube recently that I
did a a little bit of a collaborative
video with Gavin Freeborn and that
interview is actually posted over on his
channel go check that out but I've
appeared on a lot of other people's you
know YouTube channels or audio podcast
usually when people reach out to me I
always say yes I'm always up for
chatting about Linux free open source
software so you over the years I've
appeared I don't know and some things
I've appeared on recently I think I was
on a Josh over at keep it Ticky you know
he invited me over to his channel uh
recently I've been on zany Tyler's
podcast before I've also been on the no
tux allowed podcast recently that
particular podcast no tuck allowed is
the one that big pod and Josh Lee do
some other things that you know off the
top of my head I remember I've done a
couple of guest appearances on the
destination Linux podcast I appeared on
a a Rocco from Big Daddy Linux he had a
podcast called the Linux Spotlight I
appeared on that a number of years ago
and that's actually a really good
interview go check that out if you
haven't seen that moving on to the next
question hey DT how has sln thing been
treating you do you still use it so
that's a great question sync thing this
is a great way to sync files from
multiple machines multiple devices your
desktop computers laptops mobile devices
do I still use sync thing no and it's
not because sync think wasn't great it
was actually working wonderfully for me
while I was testing it out I tested it
out for a few weeks but I didn't really
need sync thing and the reason I did
need it is because I was already using
nexcloud I already had a nexcloud server
my own server set up and I was already
syncing files to all of my devices using
nexcloud and it works so and I like
nexcloud I was going to keep the
nextcloud instance regardless so I just
uh you know quit using sync thing but I
wanted to do that video about syn thing
because it is a easier solution much
easier solution for most people to get
up and running than creating your own
nexcloud server right that's a little
bit for nerds you know having your own
nexcloud server but sync thing is
something pretty much anybody can do
it's not difficult at all so I do think
for you know 95% of people that are
trying to sync files across multiple
devices sync thing is probably the
better way to go if you have a little
bit more exotic needs and especially if
you're just a bit of a nerd the next
Cloud Server that's probably what you
want to do and the next question is hey
DT I know you're still using xmonad
primarily and it seems like you're quite
a pillar of that Community meanwhile I
know that your xmonad config could use a
little polish you're still using Dynamic
log for xmobar for example and he goes
on yada yada yada I'm doing this doing
that this needs to be updated uh okay so
couple of things he says I know you're
still using xmonad primarily no you
don't because I haven't used xmonad in
probably a year and a half you know I've
been primarily using qtile as my window
manager for at least a year maybe a year
and a half maybe two years it's been a
long time so I haven't touched my X mon
config in a long time it's out of date
so you're right it could use some work
but I'm not going to work on it because
I'm not using xmonad right now if
there's any problems in that config you
fix it if you're looking at that config
and because you wanted a jump start on
how to configure xmonad then hopefully
it is a good jump start for you it gets
you you know pretty far into that config
if there's some things that need to be
tweaked or changed or maybe some things
you know some syntax that's broken now
with the latest update of xmonad I don't
know if there's anything broken in that
config but if there is you're going to
have to put in that work yourself to
figure that out because I I've got a
million configs on my DOT files on my
gitlab and you know 90% of those configs
are for pieces of software I don't
actually use or don't use regularly you
know they were configurations I did for
purposes of a video and for purposes of
helping the community like my xmonad
config has helped probably thousands of
people try out xmonad that otherwise
wouldn't because of the difficulty of
learning high school and working out how
to add all the extensions and everything
you know it's a pretty steep learning
curve but you know I put that stuff out
there to help people get started but you
know I can't be like a
247 support channel for everything I've
ever put on my DOT files uh I just don't
have the time for that so just know that
most of my DOT files yeah they're going
to be out of date other than the things
I use all the time on a daily basis
right now I use qle my qile config is up
to date I use emac every day I use my
shell configs every day you know my bash
config my fish config those things
should be up to date but anything that's
a window manager that's not qall I can
tell you right now may be out of date so
be aware moving on to the next comment
hey DT when you start talking I always
know you're going to take a long time to
make a point you talk too slow you
really like taking your time don't you
yeah I do like taking my time actually
ask your wife next hey DT I was looking
for ways of securing app Images running
on my Arts system with permission
management kind of like flat packs could
you point out any solution to achieve
this uh no I actually can't because I
don't think you know for one thing app
Images they are not as secure as things
like flat packs and snaps so even though
we have these three Dro agnostic
containerized uh package formats right
app images flat packs snaps app Images
are kind of the Oddball in the bunch
because they don't inherently run in any
kind of sandboxed environment thus by
default app Images are never going to
necessarily be as secure from if you're
talking purely security right they're
never going to be as secure as a flat
pack or a snap because again that's just
the way they're built so always verify
the source of your app image as long as
you're getting your app Images directly
from a reliable source like when I go
grab I have app images on my system I
have app image for Caden live that I use
on a regular basis and a few other apps
and I but I go get the app image
directly from the folks that make Kaden
live they actually create the app image
themselves just make sure you're going
to get the packages from a respectable a
reputable Source you should be okay but
as far as trying to make your app image
as secure as flat packs or snaps I don't
know any methods to do that but again
we're putting it out there here on
camera maybe somebody in the YouTube
comments under this video will have
suggestions for you moving on hey DT
where are your videos on Odyssey this
video isn't there at the moment please
see message and upload to Odyssey thank
you so he was right there for a few
weeks uh my videos were not appearing on
Odyssey and it wasn't just me everybody
that was doing a automatic sync from
YouTube to Odyssey that feature was
broken uh YouTube did some changes and
and you know Odyssey just couldn't do
the automatic sync anymore so there for
a few weeks you didn't get any of my
videos on Odyssey because I wasn't
manually uploading them and I can just
tell you I will probably never manually
upload videos to Odyssey or any other
platform that's not YouTube I already
upload to Youtube and it's convenient
for them to just automatically sync from
YouTube uh I know people are going to
say well that's lazy you should just do
it yourself well you know I I do a lot
of videos a lot of video content and you
know even things that take just a few
minutes you know minutes count you know
especially when you're talking about
things you do every single day so just
know that you know while the sink was
broken yeah you didn't get any videos on
Odyssey I apologize for that but it is
what it is but they fixed it now my
videos at least for the dro tube channel
are back being synced on Odyssey for
those of you that watch my other channel
DT options they're not being synced
because I guess the channel is too small
they just stopped the automatic sync I
messaged them about it a few weeks ago
they restarted the automatic sync and
then when they had their problems recent
problems with YouTube they stop they
stopped the automatic sync again I'm
probably just going to completely delete
the DT options Odyssey Channel because
again I'm not going to manually upload
and the few videos that are there
confuse people they're like hey are you
posting the Odyssey or aren't you so
that channel I'm probably just going to
pull down but the dro tube channel
should be there and working as expected
and the final question or comment this
one is in regard to a lot of the weird
political drama that goes on in the
community and I I always tell you guys I
really don't get into this I don't care
I'm I'm not interested in fighting about
politics or arguing about politics never
done that I don't do that in life I'm
not going to do that on the internet but
some people just don't understand why
that's the case with me this person
writes hey DT you say you don't care
about all the drama in the false
Community but I think you should start
speaking out on it this seems to be a
growing problem and you know what I
completely reject both his premises here
I reject the fact that I should start
speaking out on it obviously but I also
reject that this seems to be a growing
problem it's not a growing problem this
drama in the community it it's growing
louder with certain influencers in the
Linux and fr open source software space
a lot of this drama has always existed
it just gets more attention by certain
people there are certain
stirrers out there that like you
know stirring the pot right they like
stirring div Vision amongst us I don't
play that game right I'm not interested
in playing that game if you want to know
I mean I've stated this plenty of times
do I think that these open source
projects should they be injecting
politics into their communities and
especially into their software no I
think anybody with any sense at all
would say no to that question but some
of these people hey they have their
their mental issues or whatever they're
trying to you know push whatever social
agenda activist agenda they're doing hey
I do I think those people are wrong yes
now do I think some of the reaction to
what those people are doing by the
people that disagree do I think some of
that reaction is overreaction and in
some cases more harmful than what the
people that they they're trying to
protest you know yes yeah I think some
people on the other side of that
argument are equally if not worse than
the people you like it's one of those
things a lot of these software projects
I do think are mistaken when they start
doing some of their little social
activism or whatever but guess what
they're going to realize the mistake
eventually it will all sort itself out
right because free and open source
software is a Marketplace you know it's
like a the capitalist marketplace right
and it's one of those things that the
good ideas will rise to the top the bad
ideas will fall to the way side there's
it's a Marketplace of ideas right and
some people will buy some people will
sell so if what these software projects
are doing is truly bad and harmful trust
me they're going to realize that soon
enough I don't need to go out there and
be a cheerleader you know watching a
particular software project burned to
the ground and cheering and saying hey
this is a great thing all of us you know
join me and making fun of this software
project that's clearly doing the wrong
thing I don't need to do that I would be
a complete and total to do
something like that I'm just not going
to do it I know other people are out
there doing that hey let them do their
thing again kind of like I'm not going
to speak out on the open source projects
that are you know I possibly doing the
wrong thing I'm not going to go and just
completely you know take a on other
content creators that I also think are
doing the the community a disservice by
trying to protest a lot of this stuff in
the end I just let people do their own
thing and again it's a Marketplace of
ideas if what they're doing is
working you know they'll be around in
the future if what they're doing is not
working they may not be around in the
future and what you or me or anyone else
has to say on any of this at the end of
the day really doesn't matter now before
I go I need to thank a few special
